Yep, great mind games, we end up paying 14m or 17m :)

In all honestly, it's a good signing. Chelsea are still far ahead though. Someone compared our midfield to theirs. Problem is, after their first choice three midfielders, comes Essien. With us, IF we sign Mascherano and Carrick, come O'Shea or Fletcher.

yep, great mind games, we end up paying for a quality midfielder. In todays football, quality costs. Bear in mind mate when we bought Keano it was a record breaker then. Many said it was far too much to pay for a player.....

Hope so,

I mean he should of been sacked for his comments the other day along the lines of i'd be happy with this current squad and im sure the fans would!

"If I were to start the season with all the players I've got available, all fit, I don't think the supporters would be disappointed - neither would I."

Obv he shouldn't really be sacked but it was a dumb comment to make when you have 635 people on Red Cafe pulling their hair out for a transfer.

In all honesty, I don't think the silly mind games came into it, there were never going to make any difference. We wanted Carrick, Spurs wanted a top price, it was always going to end this way.

I think he will he will continue to improve dont worry bout that. Spurs wanted top dollar cos they are not a selling club anymore, they didnt want or have to sell him. If we wanted him we were always going to pay this sort of price

Dig up stupid!
If true this is a lot of money - but what can you do? I can't remember the last time UTD paid a reasonable price for anyone

Carrick is a quality player who'd do well at UTD imo, people slagging him off for no reason are idiots. He's improved no end in the lsat 2 years and a step up could be just what he needs. It wasn't until chelsea started signing other top players that lampard really kicked on and there's no reason why, surrounded by better players, that carrick can't improve even further with us

Im the only one who is happy with this then?

Never going to be cheap, but he'll help us keep the ball a lot better which will be crucial in Europe. If we pair him with someone like Hargreaves or idealy (though unrealistically) Mascharano then it would be perfect.

This is honestly a good move for the club. Fergusons record on domestic buys is very good indeed. Im pleased.

We always pay the classic "Utd Tax" but £17 million goes far beyond that! It's absolutely astonishing that they would pay that much, especially 2 days after SAF says we wont pay over the odds............

I'm fecking ecstatic, the boy replaces the most important part of Keanos game (the passing which he actually betters) whilst also being a very fine when defending.

The player to pair him with is Reo-Coker, or any other attacking midfielder that runs hard, we don't need a second midfielder whos first instinct is to defend

We need a Makelele/Gattuso type of player now, we already got a attacking midfielder in Scholes.

It's a matter of time anyway. Spurs want to sell and Carrick wants to move.

You can't deny that Carrick would be a good addition to the squad, though.
I'm very pleased, Scholes and Carrick will work well against teams like Reading/Lille but against Liverpool/Chelsea we also need a ballwinner or their midfields will run over us again.

He might be playing with the idea of Rooney and Scholes with Carrick behind them, and Saha lone upfront. :nervous:

No links anywhere yet. This has to be a wind up.

Anyways, a good addition if he comes but severly overpriced. Also, I've not seen him week in week out, but from what I have, he seems to be a really good at holding posession and passing forward.

Havent seen too much of his tackling though. Lets hope hes as good at winning the ball as he is at keeping and passing it.

Everybody was complaining about a lack of transfer activity, but suddenly there are a lot of people who strongly believe that no signing is much better than 17m for Carrick.

I thank God that I'm not a football manager.

bunch of jokers - you guys sound as though you're paying 17 million out of your own pocket. Who the hell cares what we pay for him? Its Glazer's money and he is already in the hole for a lot more so a few extra millions over Carrick's supposedly "true" value is really not a big deal. It's also a moot point that Jol got him for 2.5 million 2 seasons ago. Risk Vs. Reward - Jol took a risk signing him at that stage in his career and now that others have seen that Carrick's got potential Jol is getting rewarded for it.

All those thinking they could have got Mascherano for a "few more $s" are also speaking out of their arse - I'm sure if he was available for a reasonable price we would have gone in for him.

As I see it Carrick is a definite improvement over Fletcher, OShea etc
By far the most reasonable post yet in this thread. The only reason I would find logical to bitch about the price is if it limits our ability to sign someone else, especiallly Masherano. Otherwise, who cares. He is absolutely an upgrade to what we have in that position and obviously adds much needed depth.

The Spurs fans are furious and sad. I see that as a good thing. Someone who was a key player in their very successful side of last year can surely do a good job for us. The price is a letdown, but I suppose that we had to spend the cash on somebody.

Carrick is not our last signing this summer, not by a long shot.

Edit: IF, of course, we actually signed Carrick.
