To get the club back to the perch whilst quality players are trying to stay away from us is going to be really tough, and will take a lot of time. Wage structure will eventually have to be adjusted to face the reality that is loss of income due to extended mediocracy.

I think we desperately need a strong and charismatic DoF to convince players about the project. Ole is a nobody for others.

Discount version of the Sneijder saga. Thankfully we were put out of our misery early this time.

Hopefully we have another target lined up. If we don't sign some sort of creative midfielder or quality forward, we will be in trouble next season.

Do you realise how ridiculous this is? You are saying one of the most sought after talents in Europe is sitting ready to sign... on the off chance we miss out on the likes of Dybala, GLC and Coutinho . Im sure Bruno and Sporting are cool with that.
The most sought after talents? You realise that Sporting have had zero confirmed bids from other teams right?! And are actively trying to sell the player to cash in.
Sporting are fine with it, I'm sure Bruno is too,

It's not a surprise any top player wants to go to Spain, that doesn't mean they'll achieve that ambition. You sell them your plan and identity, not walk away because they're not falling at the feet of a novice manager whose greatest achievement is relegation and a club with no playing identity and is in disarray.
Yeh, we were "in for them" while actually only buying starving Brits.

When this whole young, British, and hungry model comes back to bite Ole, I'm going to slaughter him and want him out. The plastic Fergie has made his bed.
Mejbri isn't British.

We're targetting individuals who are:
1. Young
2. Hungry
3. Honoured to play for Manchesterster United

We've also targetted Dybala, Eriksen, De Light and Sancho. The idea that we're only going for British players is ridiculous. Those players all turned us down, because of how bad we currently are.

The fact is that most top players don't want to come here.

James, AWB and Maguire were signed because they do. Their nationality is coincidental.

It's concerning that posters here focus so much on where a player is from. Nationality should be irrelevant. It quite obviously is to the management at United.

tbh I expect this whole saga consisted of someone telling us Levy would sell Eriksen to us if we made an offer, we sounded Eriksen out found out he ideally wants to go to Spain and that was that

Like I said it's frustrating this kind of stuff comes out at all especially as behind the scenes this was probably concluded a lot quicker than the near 24 hours this story has been running for

Eriksen wants to go to Spain according to the latest from BBC. And that would be the end of our transfer window. Not great but not bad either. Exactly how no one predicted or wanted it.

This transfer window is like the graveyard of broken dreams.

I can't remember last when so many quality players were available on the open market

The media is having a field day with us portraying that no one wants to be here. Im sure Utd aren't going into negotiations with a player they aren't sure that either wants to sign or can meet the wage demands. If they were in for him, the player wants to come and it's fallen down cause the club can no longer get his replacement. Also other players become available so Utd may choose not to follow it through.
I think the problem is a journo or someone hear's that an enquiry has been made and then a frenzy eludes and everyone gets ahead of themselves. Id say Woody contacted Levy and Levy said yeah you can talk to him. Eriksen then said he wasn't interested end of story.

Haha. We are buying talented, hungry and motivated players regardless of nationality. We want a core of players that’s want to be here, develop and help us achieving success again.

Looks like he wants to go to Spain, which isn't a surprise at all.

Question is if he'll go cheap this window, or sign a pre-contract in January and go free next summer?

“Solskjaer is happy with the squad and knows a rebuild cannot be done in one summer”

But we haven’t even signed one midfielder, let alone the 2-3 we need. It’s hardly expecting the Earth is it? We lost 2 players from a midfield that already wasn’t good enough, and haven’t bought a single one.

David Moyes had a similar laid back attitude to signings. You can’t just assume you’ll be given 5 years to rebuild the squad.

Funny how we have found out that he prefers Spain over us and yet I would have thought that would have been picked up at an early stage. I used to think Skysports was a decent site but now most of the stories are just unbelievable ones from Italy or I am just sure they make their own up.
The only way he would leave Spurs to come to us would be for huge money and if the motives of Dybala were questioned why would this be different.
Let us face it....when we try to buy a player it is a three bid process as the asking price when we are concerned is always unrealistic so it is a process to bring it down so if there is no opening bid by us for a player at this stage then it ain’t happening.

He's pretty shit, Id certainly rather keep Lukaku rather than sign Mandžukić.
I would rather sell Lukaku and sign no one, if the choice is to retain Lukaku.

He isn't shit, he isn't pure goal scorer.

Looks like James Cooper was right the other day when he said United wouldn't be doing anymore business in the transfer window.

I'm extremely curious what happens to Eriksen now. Tottenham are risking losing him for nothing if Real Madrid wont buy him. I've heard they are exploring De Beek from Ajax over Pogba since they can't afford Pogba. The reported James Rodriguez + £27 million is one of the most laughable bids for a player of Pogbas caliber in football history.
Hopefully Eriksen goes to Madrid for free to annoy Levy and Tottenham fans and this makes them drop interest in Pogba.

Why not? Isn't that the point of signing the long term contract?

Results will ultimately dictate Ole's future, right now we have a squad capable of getting a 3rd/4th placed finish. Granted that could change by the end of the window but if Ole delivers that then further investment will come next summer

I don't get the signing, United need goals and signing Mandžukić would mean Martial and Rashford wide if hes going to play.
Yeah we need goals and doubt Mandzukic will be playing every game. Also just by signing #9 we won't be scoring more goals, we have to improve the performance of the team, which results in chance creation and goals.

That's going to take some incredible defending from Maguire, AWB and the lot + we're going to need 2017 De Gea back

Because with the midfield we've got, I'm not so confident we'll be scoring many goals

I would think he’s more of an alternative option and would just be a bench player. We’ll probably put the faith in Martial and Rashford getting us enough goals.

I imagine he doesn't just want to buy midfielders for the hell of it, so fans can then sulk and abuse the manager for signing the likes of Fred. If the players he wants aren't available, then he doesn't want to bring in a random replacement. You might not agree with that, but it's hardly a terrible stance to have, and it spits in the face of all those suggesting we don't have a 'plan' or 'identity.'

Probably what Moyes thought as well.

If Ole delivers 3rd or 4th then of course he’ll stay on. I’d say he deserves a statue if he gets 3rd with the squad we have today.

My point is it’s a results business, and if we’re 10th on Boxing Day, Ole is going to wish he’d pushed a bit harder for a midfielder this summer, since he’s not even going to get to the next one.

So come on, where are all the posters who argued he would want a United move?

Said it over and over that he wouldn't be interested.

It’s a stance I agree with in general, but I refuse to believe he couldn’t identify at least one attainable midfielder.

It's not about just being attainable, it's about being the right midfielder. Looks as though he doesn't think there are any out there worth spunking huge amounts of money on. We've bought enough players who don't fit, I'd prefer not to bring another in. Who'd you think we should be after?

Brilliant post. And the only thing i would add to it is that I think the top players will only come here now for stupid wages at present after seeing what sanchez got.

I cant criticise Dybala - wants to stay at Juve, they try to push him out and he turns to us and asks for a crazy wage. I think we’d all do the same at work. If you didn't want to work somewhere, but thought they might pay you a stupid wage to do so, the only motivating factor would be money. Probably the same for other top talents. At the moment they wont get to play CL, and are unlikely to win anything domestically looking at City and Liverpool.

Whether we like it or not, the brand is shrinking. The likes of Sancho and De Ligt etc were 11/12 last time we won a title. 6 more years and no top young players will even remember us being anything other than a mediocre team trying to get top 4. How will we attract talent then?

Obviously Sky talk plenty of bollocks, but I've just seen an alert saying "Manchester United have ended their interest in signing Christian Eriksen from Tottenham".

Just means are scouts arent much use.

Loads of players about with a low profile who will be muppet targets in 2020 and 2021.

Not far wrong or even, we'll only consider it if we get X player, that didn't happen so it was a non-starter anyway.

Glad for you to point me in the direction of all these unknowns other clubs competing/trying to compete at the top table are gobbling up and throwing straight into their starting XI.

All completely made up bull. either perpetrated by United or Spurs or other clubs and/or just fabricated lies by the media. What sort of nonsense is it that United attempt to buy players and they arnt interested. Are you telling me that we contacted Juve for Dybala and then Eriksen and sat down for contract negotiations and midway through Ed throws out..."So tell us why you want to join Manchester United' and they both umm and ahhed and failed the test.
Bull. Nonsense. Both players want to go to clubs that dont even friggin want them. Juve does not want Dybala and Real have not made any bid for Eriksen. Are they mental. Stalkers that sit outside of clubs that dont want them begging to be let in? Its all a load of. Then on top of it all of a sudded Dybala really wants to go to Spurs. Its his lifelong dream. Yeah right.
True story is we spent our money and are too stupid and tight to address the glaringly obvious holes in our squad. Instead of negotiating Ed is out there throwing out stories to the media so he looks good.
Rant over - Muppet mode activated....maybe we will still get one of them. Maybe Even two.

Yes. A fee could be agreed with Spurs, but player doesnt want to come. Prefers to move to Spain which is fair enough
