This is quite true actually. I've got a number of friends born in the 90s who are Liverpool fans. They may not have seen Liverpool win the league before but the history and romantic nature of the club draws them in, I guess.

It also helps that despite their league failures, Liverpool have won the odd trophies now and again, including the 2005 CL league.

Clubs like United and Liverpool do have that intangible attraction compared to say, Spurs.

I don’t think it’s all down to a down turn in United’s fortune, football on a whole has changed, mid tier teams DONT need to sell, especially in the PL.

None of my nieces or nephews have seen United win anything of note or play attractive football on a consistent basis and none are United fans.
I wonder if this would be concerning to Ed or the Glazers.

Honestly, a little part of me was alright with him joining in the hopes that he'd show the world what a horrible scout I'd make. Our midfield is in such a dire position right now so I would've loved for him to come in and just be the class player most believe he is.

That said, yeah, I'm not too fussed about missing out on him myself.

Yes indeed. Both us and Pool have had very successful spells and have put out some of the greatest teams ever in England. But I also think the tragedies that have befallen both clubs have also had an impact. Munich drew loads of new supporters towards us, and lots have stayed during the next generations. Similarly Pool with Hillsborough and Heysel.
 
Wonder if Zidane actually likes Eriksen. I am surprised not to hear about any approach. Straight swap for James & Eriksen seems ideal for both teams, if Zidane wanted him... or maybe they low ball attempt 1 hour before the deadline...

So this has gone silent. No Eriksen? Insert bewildered meme here as to why he would go from playing in a CL final to the Europa league. This was totally naf and not happening from the get go.

- Sanchez came because you made him the highest-paid player in the premiership when he clearly isn't even top 10

- Pogba came because you paid world record fee for him at the time which real refused to match. It was that transfer that made transfer prices what they are today

Agree with everything except the Pogba bit. It was Neymar after PSG got all mad with Barcelona tapping up their players that set the market on fire. I mean, Madrid had already bought Rolando for £80m 8? years before and that didn't have the knock on effect that the Neymar deal did.
 
Has anyone actually watched him last season? I feel like a lot of people here last paid attention to him in his brilliant 2016/2017 season and nothing serious since :wenger:

Reports coming out saying he had a gentleman’s agreement not to join another PL side. No idea how true it is, reported in the mail.

You're not allowed to suggest that the club doesn't have the draw of Real/Barca/City/Liverpool if you are a proper supporter. Even if it's true.

Or that foreign players would rather live in London than Manchester.

Athletico Madrid latest to make contact regarding Eriksen, talks happening at the moment. They'll have one hell of a team if they get him.

I'd have agreed with you on Pogba a while back but the Real Madrid stuff wont go away and now Ole is trying to play him in a 2 which doesn't work, Ole clearly wanted a #10 so we should have done a deal for money and Isco IMO.

Our best hope of 4th are that Chelsea have a transfer ban so they couldn't get a striker which they badly need, and Arsenal are Arsenal, we all look crap on paper so it's going to be who can be less crap over 38 games will snatch 4th, unless one of Everton, Leicester or Wolves have a hell of a season and slip passed all 3 of us.

Definitely in the media they'll be hung out to dry, nothing will be said about "Rashy" and "Lingz", and if we have defensive issues Lindelof will carry that can in the media as well.

Certainly overseas I can see our popularity will start to fade, fans in the US, Asia and Africa supported us because we were exciting and successful under Fergie, and we had some great players, these fans aren't interested in following a team that's ambition is 4th and who only has 1 star player. Now I'm sure hardcore's, especially those who are Manc born and bred are fine with this, but the club wont be as we are a business, we prioritize financial success over football success way more than any of the other so called elite clubs.
 
Still hoping that Eriksen decides to stay with Spurs, signs a new contract and gets back to being his usual self.

If it gets as bad as this, marketing revenue will decline and the Glazers may finally be forced to sell.

Isn't going to happen unfortunately. At this stage he's clearly decided to wait till his contract expires and profit from the huge money he'll make from being a free agent.

On one hand it's a bit of a dick move, but on the other I can understand why a player not far off his thirties who hasn't really ever had a 'mega contract' might want to secure his future. That and obviously trophies.

He did sign a one year extension at Ajax... I really hope he would consider the same with us, even with a clause for a club he wishes. I don’t care how you cut it I think it’s a shitty thing to do to go on a free, just my opinion.

It's not great, I agree. All I'm saying is I do understand why he's done it but at the same time it does leave the club in a shitty situation and he knows that, so it's most certainly a dick move.

I expect we'll see him in and out of the team this season as he gets phased out. And I'll be surprised if he gives it his all given he knows one bad injury would scupper his chances a bit.

Yet Toby seems to get kept on as a first teamer? I’m not saying your wrong but I don’t see why one gets phased out and not the other?

Well, i'll try anyways. You bought him for pennies compared to prices nowadays. He has definitely paid his price by performances throughout the seasons.
He doesn't owe spurs anything.

Ok so if every player did it, what exactly would happen? Also why publicly state signing a new contract was possible, it’s not like we haven’t tried to negotiate with him.

Meh I can’t agree. America football is a total different financial beast to football. The only clubs free agents would benefit are the elite clubs. The entire way football is run finincially would have to change.

They've been in contact with him since May, when he told them he'd prefer to go to Spain. The club then tried to convince him again before the window closed, but he wasn't interested. Or so I have heard. Bottom line is that he didn't want to come here.

Hope he goes to Atleti. Real will be struggling this year if so.

The only clubs that purchase big players are the elite clubs too. It wouldn't change that dynamic, at the end of the day if you want to keep a player you need to meet two requirements, offer trophy prospects and pay well.

And I'm not sure why you mentioned American football since free agency is a thing in all American sports.

Well they have a salary cap, also the money is distributed much more evenly among all teams. They also have a draft, something that would be near impossible in football.

Still, i like the current transfer market well enough. Now if the PL stops shooting their dicks off and go back to end it at the end of august like all normal leagues do... :rolleyes:
