Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, commonly known as Wolves or The Wanderers, is an English professional football club based in the city of Wolverhampton in the West Midlands. The club were founded as St. Luke's in 1877 by John Baynton and John Brodie, after a group of pupils at St Luke's Church school in Blakenhall had been presented with a football by their headmaster Harry Barcroft. Two years later, they merged with local cricket and football club The Wanderers, to form Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club then became one of the twelve founders of the English Football League in 1888 and finished the inaugural season in a creditable third place, as well as reaching their first ever FA Cup Final, losing 3–0 to the first Double winners, Preston North End.

The club spent 33 years in the top flight from 1932 to 1965, their longest continuous period at that level (albeit league football was in hiatus from 1939 to 1946 due to World War II). During the 1950s, the club was English league champions three times (1953–54, 1957–58 & 1958–59), whilst under the management of Stan Cullis. Wolves has also finished runners-up in the league on five occasions (most recently in 1959–60) and in third place on a further six occasions (most recently in 1960–61). On the domestic cup front, they have won the FA Cup four times, most recently in 1960, and has finished runners-up on a further four occasions, and the Football League Cup twice, in 1974 and 1980.

Wolves have long-standing rivalries with other West Midlands clubs; the main one is with West Bromwich Albion, against whom they contest the Black Country derby and with whom Wolves has played more league fixtures (146) than any other football opponent, even though the two clubs have not met in a league fixture since 2011–12 (the last season they competed in the same division as each other). Wolves also share rivalries with the two Birmingham clubs, Aston Villa and Birmingham City, though they are much further away than West Bromwich. They play their homes games at the Molineux Stadium, the first stadium ever built for use by a Football League club and one of the first British grounds to have floodlights installed and it hosted some of the earliest European club games in the 1950s.

Brilliant so far. We will learn a lot about this team in the second half as Wolves will throw everything at us.

Not convinced about James but really want him to succeed. Martial's finish was ruthless.

One shot on target is not at all reflective of our dominance. Wolves have been really negative but you have to also say super defensively. There have been several instances when we've been on the verge of a shot and a last ditch tackle has stopped it.

    Great half.

Totally in control of the game. Wolves have done feck all I don't think they even created one chance. Great goal too from us.

Hopefully second half will go on similar to this.

Start of the season has been far better than my expectations.

Good first half. Continue like this and we will win.
I can see James getting a second yellow.

So far so good. We've snuffed out any threat they've had, and while we have been a bit pedestrian in the possession for most of the game, we took the few chances we've had and converted one to a goal. Hope we can be more creative second half with possession.

Solid first half. Defence well on top. Need a bit more quality with the final ball but other than that very satisfying

Wolves will surely come out better for the second half, they've been so defensive surely that's gonna change. Pogba and Lindelof need to improve their passing, been sloppy. Rashford, Shaw and AWB very good.

Good first half. I love that we are dominant on the call and as soon as we lose it we work hard to get it back.

We need to create more and Rashford and James need to get more into the game but overall very happy with that half.

Good first half, Wolves have barely had a sniff and I think that's down to AWB who has been flawless in defence. I want to see him a bit more confident in attack.

    First half observations:

    AWB is class
Harry has settled in very well
    Dan James looks promising
    Martial looks hungry
    Pog, Rash, McT, Shaw solid
Lindalof needs to improve passing accuracy
    Lingard meh
    De Gea bored?

Martial leading the line. Lukaku would never have been able to do the same with the intricate play Martial has been doing so far. Loving what I'm seeing.

Maguire's take down... Stuff of legends.

We're in full control of the game, dominated the midfield, pressed as if our lives depended on it and Martial is performing like a proper number 9.

    Brilliant performance so far.

Nice to see the effort levels so high, some things may not work quite right but everyone hunting in packs and working hard off the ball. If we force Wolves to come out we could get a lot more chances.

    Good first half.
Wolves let you have the ball, so it makes us look better at times, but when called upon, our defence has been excellent.

Passing in midfield is the only slight concern I guess.

    Good first half.

Lingard missing, and all our set plays have been shite, so sub him for Andreas

Think James should come off for Greenwood too, can see him getting sent off

Boring half but we controlled it from start to finish. Superb goal.

Hopefully we can finish them off.

Great half from us. Absolute control, and McTominay has looked like a veteran, just seems to be in the right spot to calmly collect the ball every time it comes free

Greenwood for James would be a good change, although James has grown into it a bit.

Excellent half from United. We kept the tempo and never let wolves in.

Good first half. Wolves came to sit deep and hit us on the counter and we have accepted to take possession and have controlled the game nicely so far.
    Martial took his goal perfectly.
Wolves barely had any chances, very little time on the ball all round.
James doesn’t look very comfortable on the left but has worked hard enough.
Pogba hasn’t set a foot wrong but hasn’t influenced the game greatly either, probably due to his positioning on the pitch.
AWB flawless. AWB is a beast!
