We wanted to see youngsters, we got youngsters and the match day thread still moans and moans.
The kids and Gomes in particular have done well. Give em a break
Think if we'd stuck away one of those early Rashford chances it would be a different game, these types of teams are usually a pain in the arse until you get that first goal and then they fall away.

Funnily enough I think we should sit back and let them have the ball more. Need to open up a bit of space for someone to get behind them.
If we need that to beat Astana at OT then Ole and all players should be sacked. With all staff from coaches to cleaning ladies

Chong is playing his usual game. Just don't see it with him. Maybe he can be polished into some sort of a squad player over time. He's basically Obertan with an afro right now.

Gomes has been good but kept it a little too simple at times. Needs to trust himself more. I'd like him a touch deeper to get more involved. Great set pieces.

Greenwood has been fairly quiet yet has got a couple of shots off which he should have done better with.

Rashford has been good except for his finishing which has been anything but.

Watch how kids will be blamed for performance, when Rashford had chance or two to actually score. Also not like those playing in PL are killin it either.

The fact that kids got a run around, its a good fun to watch. Get Garner on, put Greenwood as number nine, Chong the worst of those 3 behind Rashford but thats ok.

Astana chances = Jones 100% involved
Kids won't get blamed. Only Chong has stood out in terms of not showing anything approaching average let alone good

Overal an ok display from a very inexperienced side. Shoud have been 2 or 3 nill up if Rashford wasn't in sunt a terrible finishing form. Move Greenwood at nr 9.

    Of course we will.
Bit of a worry that we are still 0-0 against this opposition and they had two opportunities to do us on the counter but they are so poor they screwed it right up, if that was a team like AZ alkmaar they will have enough quality to do damage on the break.

Did I mishear the commentator then or does the BT guy really think Astana fans are the ones chanting, "red army."
Yeah I was confused at that too.

The camera showed the United singing section in full voice and then the commentator said they were being ‘drowned out of course’.

Cant play between the line, lack up linkup play-give and go among forwards. Our only way of attacking is cross and hope, Different day, different players but same old story.

So people on here don't expect teenagers finding their feet at senior level to be raw?

Would like Ole to stick with this team and put it on them - Astana are there for a drubbing but there's no invention or intensity. Put the challenge on them, in particular Rashford, to start producing under some pressure.

Matic has been great i thought. His positioning is invaluable for when we inevitably give the ball away. He's the one sweeping everything up for us.
Yep. Matic has been very good tonight, but he's the current scapegoat for everything whenever he's playing for some.

Chong was really good the minutes he got against Leicester. And he had several top class showings in the pre-season, so I think that's why he's included here. Today might be his worst showing in the club jersey I think, perhaps its nerves.
I didn’t see that game to be fair but every time I’ve seen Chong play he’s been poor

Ah we're trying. We are trying to play attacking football, I've enjoyed it for the most part. Dalot has looked good going forward considering he's been injured. Youngsters are getting involved as much as possible.

Rashford has been wasteful. This should be the type of game in which a 200k a week forward destroys defences. Poor.

Relying on Rashford to be our main man up-front this season is going to cost us big time. He's not a natural finisher at all and he really should have had a hat-trick by now

rojo is our most attacking thread due to him playing direct balls. Neither dalot, greenwood or chong attacked their man the whole half. Just run at them.

The plays too conservative against this level of opposition.

We need to up the pace and TRY. We're being to deliberate/cautious but we really need to try and force mistakes and they will come. These team need a set of cahones. I'd rather see greenwood further forward and rashford out wide or atleast mix it. We need better movement in the box and we need a stronger half from chong

Greenwood and Chong keep coming deep into midfield when their fullbacks have the ball. Pretty poor from both of them. All we are focused on is possession but we are obviously not trained enough with what to do with it.
That’s the gist of it. No real sense of what to do with the ball once it’s near the goal. Everyone waits for Rashford to do something.

Overall we’re playing pretty well except where it counts. Matic is having a good game. Not convinced Chong is ready for prime time based on what I’ve seen.

I have to wonder, why do our kids look so slow? You'd expect speed to be one of their best assets but, Dalot aside, they all look tremendously ponderous.

Edit: Gomes too, although he's mostly quick on the ball, not off it.

The least we can do is play with some intensity and desire. Don't care if the youngsters make mistake but my good, the whole team is so subdued.

    Cowardly, low quality football.

Bloody hell if you start getting compared to Obertan, you've lost

Greenwood has shown quality before but poor in this game. Chong poor and most times ive seen him in first team hes been poor. Gomes been decent. Rashford has been average.

Would like to see Greenwood through the middle.

Its been poor from us, especially the front 4. Rashford should have put one of these chances away and the rest of them have been very static. Hardly any 1-2s on display is really strange, especially when we are trying to break down a wall of 10 players. Gomes has been very safe, Chong very wasteful and Greenwood invisible. Need to buck up our ideas in the 2nd half.

Has Chong been written off already?
Hopefully we make more chances in the second half, eventually one will go in.
Not sure why that’s laughable..every time I’ve seen Chong play he’s been awful for us. Tonight isn’t an isolated incident

It's not the players, it's not Rashford, it's not Chong. Our problem is and has been for a long time that almost our entire team just stands there in possession. Only Rashford shows any sort of movement. Then when we occasionally have Gomes, Chong Greenwood in-between lines, our midfield always plays it safe and ball ends up out wide.

So we’re playing 2 out of 3 attackers out of position?
Closer. We play with non clinical striker on striker position, with "best finisher in club" on the right wing and Chong on the left

And on top of that, we play on crosses.

Wish the kids were performing better, but I won't complain. I asked for kids and squad players and we are getting it.

Just how did Marcus Rashford bag a superstar's contract at Manchester United when he consistently plays like a schoolboy?!

He is nowhere near good enough for this club.

We are screaming out for world class strikers, and how the board do not see that is criminal.

Started off well, but the performance tailed off after some time. Looks like Astana are giving it their all to not score.

Rojo and Dalot have been very good. Gomes and greenwood started off well, but then tapered off.

Chong and Rashford have been poor. Don't see why Ole picks Chong tbh, the guy doesn't have one standout attribute.

We are lacking a lethal finisher in this squad. Any top striker would have scored 1/2 goals out of the chances rashford had.
