McTominay - what’s his potential?

He can be like a peak Fletcher, and I mean that as a big compliment.
How would that be anything other than a compliment? Peak Fletcher was very good.

Or maybe I interpreted you wrong cause it's getting late and I'm sleepy.

Peak Fletcher was a midfield destroyer. He was the ultimate work horse like Kante and that game against Fabregas in the CL semi in 08/09 at the emirates was absolute class. Should never have been sent off.

If he can hit that level consistently, i'll be very happy.

I see McSause being the midfield equivalent of Irwin.

I meant slagged McT off, not Jose

Yep, I remember being one of very few praising him not that long back. His quality has been clear for a long time but a lot of people need others to get on board before they can follow suit. He's only got better since.

Think people are getting a bit carried away. He's playing very well at the moment but against Liverpool and Chelsea we didn't really have a hold of the game in midfield.

When you think that a year ago he looked like a deer caught in the headlights and was being subbed off at half time, his progress has been pretty impressive.

The best thing about him for me is he actually looks like a leader now. We've been getting battered with criticism and he's been the one standing up in games and trying to force the issue.

Agreed.

Had developed a lot and turned into a decent midfielder for us. Easily good enough for our squad and with some more improvement in touch and passing can be a key CM for us.

Ha no you're right. I just wonder how he was looked back on by others. I really rated him.

Scottish Steven Gerrard... just has to start hitting more worldies.

He's definitely capable of scoring close to 10 goals in season and supposedly this was only Pogba's trait, judging from the midfielders.

Oh no this feels like a jinx thread.

Fair enough. Jose gets far too many mentions on here.

Have to hold my hands up regarding Scott. I didn't think he was a good enough in possession to be a United midfielder. Couldn't have been more wrong. He's dominant.

Many forget that he played a good bit as a striker for the reserves. Definitely has double figures in him. I think I actually predicted he'd score a good few this season during the summer. Happy to see him putting into action in the first team.

Guys I won’t lie, when he took that shot in the second half vs Chelsea today I thought it was going to be a goal haha
I can see him becoming one of our greatest midfielders. His hunger and passion will make sure of that.

He ate Verratti, Henderson and Kovacic easily. Monster of an athlete. Skys the limit. If Pogba had a quarter of this guys mentality we'd have a strong midfield.

Pogba is one of best midfielders in world football. He doesn’t need anything form McSauce.

One of the big surprises this season. He is improving at a very steady rate.

I think he is like a mixture of Carrick and Fletcher. The defensive side of his game reminds me a lot of Carrick. He reads the game and only goes in for the tackle when he 100% sure. He also utilises his height to the maximum advantage like how Carrick used to.

He’s already playing at a pretty decent level. Last season I said he was already better than Matic and people argued against that. I also said he’s more than capable of replacing Herrera. I think I am going to be proven right on both accounts by the end of this season.

It’s important for him to stay consistent with it now.

If he can do a fletcher, i'll be impressed. Time is on his side though. Also, a really class attacking midfielder can bring the best out of everyone. More so for CM like McTom. Exciting times to see our academy players stepping up when we are in a crisis where the likes of lukakus, pogbas and dimarias failed us. If we can pull a consistent top 3 side out of this, it will be an amazing testament for famed history and culture.

I'm hugely impressed with him this season, especially in the last two games. Against Norwich, I saw something that I hadn't seen before in his game, and that was some excellent passing, some really crisp one-touch stuff.

His work rate has always been there, and his commitment has never been in question. Against Norwich and Chelsea it looks like he's learning quickly how to use that aggression and tenacity to really impact the game and not just closing down for the sake of it. Key tackles, interceptions and simple but effective use of the ball when he wins it back. He was like a man possessed against Chelsea even after the yellow, made an enormous amount of tackles and blocks.

He seems to be improving game on game as well, I can easily see him become a player similar to Fletcher for us, which would be a reliable, quality squad player. If we fill more quality and guile around him he can excel in that combative, box to box role that often goes unnoticed in the team, but is hugely important.

I like him.. hopefully he can add some range and vision to his game.
Then he'll be fletcher/carrick in one player. Some of his best performances have been the biggest games.
And he has goal in him
Used to be a striker

I think he will developed into some midfielder. probably better than Butt and Fletcher, but not as good as Scholes and Keane. Maybe somewhere in between.

He's playing alongside Fred and Perrera. Imagine him alongside side two midfielders who werent horrendously limited.

What a performance today. He was everywhere. He’s like Fletcher on steroids.

This kid during a very rough spell for United has been outstanding, showing some real character that this team has been sorely lacking for a long time.

He is growing into a very well rounded midfielder. Has to be one of the first names on the team sheet.

He absolutely takes the game by the scruff of the neck at time’s and I have missed us having players with the guts and talent to do that.

He could become an important player for United. I really hope he continues to progress and show the character he has to this point.

Pretty much this. Hes not prime Xavi, but his effort is nothing short of fantastic and he oozes authority despite his young age. Future captain right there

It's also not just about effort with him, he's really improved his overall game steadily. He's confident on the ball, he can make those bursting runs that break lines and he isn't afraid of shooting the ball.

I will confess I didn't think he had it in him to become a united first team starter. He was amazing tonight and has been for a while. Showed a lot of maturity too after getting booked on 10 mins. Really well played.

I think he is one of the players who has benefited from a hard pre season. Now he has passed the flat period you get because of all the hard work he should enjoy the rest of the season. Today he didn't seem to tire at all. He is not shy to throw himself into any tackles. One of our most important players at the moment.

He is improving well, since Ole took over his game has progressed a lot. Maybe something they are working really hard on training ground or natural progression that comes with game time and experience.

He is taking on the players, plays passes between the lines and his shooting is also good. Even if he doesn't improve, he will be good enough to be squad player.

Future United captain and legend. I will be surprised if that doesn’t happen. In the list of midfielder at United, he can surpass Roy Keane.

I love McTominay but what the feck?

He’s probably the only player in the squad about whom I can say: if he didn’t play for us, we would be linked with him (overpriced) and that we would be calling on Ed to get the deal sorted ASAP. Fantastic progress.

Where I think he excels. Dribbling and driving forward with the ball, tackling, intercepting and general reading of the game. I think he needs to work on his passing as careless at time but otherwise I think he’s our best centre midfielder by far.

His potential, his ceiling, is something similar to Roy Keane. But like Roy Keane he will need players around him who can do the job he can’t (or should not) do.

Rashford wasn't pulling up any trees at youth level and nor was McTominay.

Meanwhile, Chong has been and he looks like he probably won't make it.

Funny old game.

Depends, I think in up and down more chaotic games he's invaluable. If we're looking to control possession or play intricate stuff then he's found lacking. I think it depends on if he can continue to be a goal threat because that makes a big difference.

But in these type of games his job should be to provide the ball to the modern day Scholes, Cantona/Yorke/Sheringham, Beckham, Giggs or fullbacks for a cross.

He can pass quickly and simple with purpose. But he cant create or set/dictate the tempo of play. Yet anyway. He probably never will, but who knows considering the mentality and will of that man.

- Against top teams we should «set him free» in a 433.
- Against «poor» teams he should play deeper (a position he might have to learn but did a lot against good teams for Mourinho) with two more creative players next to him.

I think he should be a solid 7/10 player at his peak, one who's more than good enough to hold his place down here because of his leadership abilities and his attitude. I'd be more than happy with that.

Have you lunatics ever seen Roy Keane play? McT would do well to be even half the player he was.
