I'm expecting Ole to play split strikers against Sheffield United's overplapping CBs. Whether that means a 4-diamond-2 or a 3-5-2, remains to be seen.

Given our injuries in midfield, I'm thinking a 4-diamond-2 makes sense.

Young starting would worry me. They use their width well, and he would be caught out plenty.
I hope Williams gets the nod at LB.
Our pacey front 3 will cause them plenty of issues.

OGS is like LVG my Young must start if he isn’t injured.

    Hey mods,
The line up predictor to the right still reads “Can you read Jose Mourinho's mind and predict the starting XI and substitutes?”

Sheffield United haven't lost a league game by more then one goal in like 14 months or something

We'll do very well to get a win here.
Championship form doesn't really count though does it.

They also patchy at home. 3 wins 3 losses and they struggle to score more than one goal per game and usually let at least one in.

They'll also attack us with their fancy overlapping centre backs, like everyone is talking about, which means there should be opportunities to counter.

I know Shaw hasn't played for three months but would still rather play him than Young.

I can understand Ole not wanting to play Williams too much as he has only just come into the team.

Hopefully Williams starts but i fear Young will start instead of him. McTom out means one of Lingard,Mata will replace him with Pereira moving back into the CDM role.

Yet another tricky game where Man United must score first to stand a chance to getting a result.
Yeah we generally do not have any response when we go behind in a game. Just need to look at Newcastle, Bournemouth & West Ham to see that.

Last time we equalised in a game I think was Crystal Palace at home which is shocking.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Young ends up in midfield.

I’d be very surprised if Ole trusts Fred to lead the midfield.

The lineup prediction link isn’t working for me on the mobile. It’s redirecting me to the matchday discussion page. Is anyone else facing the same problem??

Young will start. I’m the same in the sense I’d love to see Williams, but he’s so young and raw, tricky away games like this could be a little too soon for him. I’m keen for him to keep playing in home games and less-pressured away games at this very early stage. He’s going to be a top player for the club you can just see it. Patience though at this stage.

I think it’s got 1-1 all over it, we’ll start better than we expect, only to get pegged back. Fingers crossed we can shade the win as its an important game for the shape of our season in terms of getting to 5th as quickly as possible and going from there.

Against 3 at the back, width and 2 forwards makes sense. I'd just go old school 442 tbh. Something like:

    De Gea
    AWB Maguire Rojo Williams
    James McTominay Fred Chong
    Rashford Martial

Obviously if Pogba's fit get him in the team for Chong and play him as a forward but no need to rush him back.

And get the wingers and strikers swapping positions every now and again too.

Isn't McTominay out two more weeks?

    Rojo is injured.

Not having enough midfielders means we will probably go with

5 at the back.. Fred, Andreas in midfield.. Lingard ahead of them and 2 up top...

Injuries mean we've got a tough job on our hands to win this one; we are so short of quality in midfield going in to the game it's depressing.

Three points would be a godsend and If Ole wins this one I'll be impressed.

With the Astana game on Thursday, I would give Williams the nod in this game. I think Ole may blood several academy players in the Europa League, and with Shaw back, I would probably go with him on Thursday, with Young at RB, and Laird on the bench. I think Pereira will slot into McTominay's position, which would open up a space for Mata, or Lingard at 10. I would give Gomes a run there, and with Rashford, Martial and James up front. Think Lindelof will partner Maguire, but would like to see Tuanzebe take over from him sometime during the match. Think Tuanzebe and Jones will play in Astana, and also thing Garner will start over there.

Everyone to their strengths. Yes, this relies on good games from Fred and Pereira. Both have put in much better performances recently, and to be honest if you can't get good games out of your last remaining fit midfielders then no formation is going to save you.

    Rojo's injured.

Tuanzebe is probably not match fit as well, so I'm wondering if wer'e gonna go with a standard back four because Jones isn't the best on the ball in a three.

Ah shit. Yeah, then I guess better to go with a back four than destabilise it by throwing Jones in there. Maybe add Garner at the base of the midfield instead?

Yeah I reckon it'll be either Garner or Pereira partnering Fred in midfield.

Can see Mata starting with Pereira in midfield. He's not gonna trust Garner

It‘s going to be a tough game since it’s away game against a team who hasn’t lost in their last 5 games. And plus we lost McTominay means we are running out some option in midfield.

However, I think they will lose because being unbeaten for 6 games sounds too good for Sheffield, surely they will somehow lose a game and tomorrow hopefully be the time.

Not sure who’s going to replace Scot, probably Axel since Matic has been injured or not play longer than Axel means Axel has better match fitness.

So will be 10th in the table before this game starts. A win puts Man United up to the lofty heights of 5th..

    Went with this lineup:

    De Gea

    Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Young

    Fred, Pereira

    James, Lingard, Rashford

    Martial

Think he'll want the energy of Lingard in there considering McTominay is out so we'll need that in midfield. Also, a potentially tricky game so Young will get the nod. Rojo is injured and Tuanzebe is just back. Not sure he'll want to risk Jones in a three.

You are right I'm sure but doesn't mean he shouldn't. He ran rings round Inter's 3 at the back in preseason. Given Rojo and McT are supposedly out then I will revise it to this rather dodgy looking lineup:

    De Gea
    AWB Jones Maguire Williams
    James Pereira Fred Chong
    Rashford Martial

Rashford free role, swapping with whoever he wants.

We can jump at least 5 teams with victory. But this team finds new ways to dissapoint just as you thought they will turn the corner. I'm not getting my hopes up.

No doubt that it won't be pretty.

Whatever team we put out will struggle to match the sheer intensity of Sheff Utd - even if we can out-football them, no way Jose we will out-battle them.

    Put me down for a 2 - 1 defeat.

We'll go 5th with three points tomorrow, which is no easy task given the opposition and the state of the midfield, but I think pulling it off will go a long way to silencing the critics (mainly of Ole) and convincing many of us that this latest stretch of good form is not just another false dawn.

Losing will bring the crows, however, especially with Poch available.

The usual wearisome news on the injury front. Pogba still absent (yawn) McTominay missing and Rojo has again picked up something hurty in training.

Midfield likely to be an uninspiring mix of Fred, Mata, Perreria, Lingard...

    Win or.... Pochetino?

We are qualified. In this case, it's best to focus on the league and leave the Thursday game for those who do not need to play in the league.

A win here would be absolutely brilliant but if gladly settle for 0-0 draw as well, given that we don't have our first choice midfield.

That's such a contradiction of a post. You just highlighted out biggest challenge tomorrow which is totally outside our managers control, and said we should ditch our manager if we cant win!
