No Busby Babes? Best, Edwards, Charlton etc.

Edit - ignore me, i've just seen the brackets...

Anyway i'd have G.Neville higher and P.Neville in there somewhere too (prob instead of McT)

Wes Brown, Jonny Evans and if we’re going down the currentyoung player route - Dwight McNeil are all ahead of McTominay. surely. Then there’s Phil Neville too. Top 10 (top 9 even) PL academy player of all time is way over the top. Danny Drinkwater and Danny Simpson both starred in PL winning campaigns. Oh, and Nicky Butt, although Scott could surpass him one day. In fact, McTominay hasn’t gotten near Ravel’s West Ham form either.

How many times does this need to be said, when Beckham was at United he was a fantastic player amongst fantastic players, but he was a level below Giggs & Scholes. Anyone who was around at the time & saw them play together should know this.
You’re speaking very mathematically/scientifically about something that is clearly subjective.

I’ll only comment on players I’ve seen properly as a 20 year old, though I’m aware players like Charlton and Edwards are up there status wise.

1: Scholes
2:Beckham
3: Giggs
4: Pogba (talent wise not in terms of legend status)
5: Gary Neville
6: Rashford (with the potential to be right up there)
7: Fletcher
8: Evans, more so for how he’s playing now at Leicester though he was a good player for us when needed.
9: Brown
10:Now for a young prospect, Ling...Mctominay:D

Although he spent more time at La Masia, Pique came out of the Utd academy. Should be above Neville at least, up for debate how he compares to midfielders/forwards.

How many times to we have to say this is nonsense and say anyone who watched us in 99 knows Becks hit way higher heights than Scholes.
It’s just fashionable now to say Scholes.

While I’m not saying one is better then the other it’s definitely true that Beckham’s footballing ability has gotten downplayed as the years have gone by. Not going to lie Beckham, both as a CM where he started, and as a RW stood out more then Scholes but in the end SAF made Scholes CM and Becks RM for a reasons, probably because Scholes was better at the simple things, and also would break up play with his fouls.

Fair point. But he’s a product of La Masia

Beckham went to Spain and didn’t look out of place technically, in Spain that’s what they place the emphasis on. Bale for all his goals isn’t really liked because technically he falls short

Peak Beckham was a level above both Giggs and Scholes. Should have won a Ballondor in '99 in my opinion and definitely been in contention for it in '02. His celebrity lifestyle has overshadowed his ability at football it seems.

But lets not turn this into a Beckham v Scholes thread eh :nervous:

No Brown or Butt?

I like your team.

Mine would be:

Henderson
G. Neville Brown Evans P Neville
Beckham Butt Scholes
Pogba
Rashford Giggs

With this line-up Butt would guard the back central defence.

Beckham would be central and would drift to the right to ping in those crosses and interchange G. Nev. He would also be utilisiing that work-rate and press as well.

Scholes would just Scholes in a deep-lying role.

The combination of the midfield 3 would allow a tactically indisciplined player like Pogba to express himself more in the final 3rd.

Rashford and Giggs would both play interchangeably both causing chaos.

This side set up in the modern game would cause a score a lot of goals. Butt as water carrier would be a key role. He was always underrated.

The back 2 are not the strongest but they are better than what we currently have.

Edit: Forgot Fletch. He would be also be a key player. Tidying things up with Butt.

Is John O'Shea an academy graduate? I can't remember, if he was I'd have him quite high on the list.

I thought of Pique but the title specifically says PL players. Pique was never a good or great PL player.

I think that is less to do with technique and more to do with the temperament of the Madrid fans.

No doubt, for some people.

I won't get into the ranking thing, because that will always depend on numerous factors.

But if you regard David Beckham as a - say - niche player, namely a "wide midfielder" (not a winger), he was historically great. Nothing short of it, in fact. His core qualities plus his extreme qualities (his pinpoint crossing ability, most notably) make this undeniable.

Alright, getting into the "ranking thing" against better judgment, I'd say (based on: peak ability, overall contribution, longevity):

(Keane)
Giggs
Beckham = Scholes

And, yeah - I'm aware that Keane isn't an academy product. But ranking the most obvious suspects, etc.

Forgot about Brown suppose it’s because I always preferred him as a RB more then CB. But yeah you team looks good too.

Hahaha, we both thought the same thing about Pogba... went for Drinkwater instead of Butt or Fletch because the former superior passing

Nah. It’s been going on for several seasons where people have said Real play better without him, started when it became obvious that Real’s play was better with Isco instead of Bale. Over time it’s escalated into personal things probably because they couldn’t get rid of him.

Pogba is miles ahead of Rashford at the moment if only for his spell for Juventus and the 2018 World Cup. Neither is Rashford more talented than him. Rashford has had a better United career so far, but that's it.

And I doubt that McTominay would be good enough to be a starter or a first midfield sub for our treble-winning side, Butt is hugely underrated.

  1. Giggs
  2. Scholes
  3. Beckham
  4. Pogba
  5. Hughes
  6. Rashford
  7. G. Neville
  8. Fletcher
  9. Butt
  10. P. Neville
  11. Brown
  12. McTominay
  13. Evans

To be fair many of you guys think McTominay is one of the league’s best players so I can see how you would respond like that.

Morrison was actually West Ham’s best player for a little while though.

I was just wondering how everybody has left out our fullback/centre half/midfielder/striker/keeper. Yes, he is an academy graduate. Mind you he came to the academy later than most. He was 17 when he signed for the academy...
