Never used to be a fan of Gervais, but I've since been converted. His cynical dislike of the celeb culture and his desire to give away his wealth to animal charities is how I like to imagine myself if I were a rich celeb. Plus After Life is a fantastic show.

Here is the full monologue. Doesn't disappoint. Always nice to see him going after the Hollywood circlejerk.

Agree with the sentiment about Gervais. Even though he wasn't the star of it - An idiot abroad was pretty brilliant too. Def recommend at least s1 of that.

My favorite diss tonight was def the one directed at Corden - who apparently truly is a massive cnut in rl.

It did seem a bit unfair to paint the entire room with the same brush about not knowing what the real world is like- plenty of actors in the room who know plenty about hardships before they made it big - some who had an entire regular job for years before they got to Hollywood -but, I get the point he was making. Just wish he had said something about the Kardashians - who I see as everything wrong with celebrity culture in America. Also- too bad the camera didn't go back on Tim Cook after the Chinese sweat shop comment.

I believe his name is Tim Apple.

I enjoyed his speech. I’m not his biggest fan personally, don’t usually love his stand up, though The Office is comedic brilliance.

Do think it’s interesting that he still gets this gig given the narrative of Hollywood being a PC gone mad industry, and his well documented comments on topics such as trans people. He referenced that himself I suppose.

There are high profile actors who have had “normal” lives before making a breakthrough so as has been said probably unfair on those to be tarred with the same brush but I did enjoy seeing him mock a pretty self indulgent sub culture.

He seems so out of place there but that just makes it more hilarious. That was genuinely really funny. Tom Hanks did not look impressed.

the monologue felt flat and a rehash of what he's said in previous awards. Liked the Di Caprio joke, but the Pesci one was a tad mean.

He ended the show by saying something to the effect of “donate to Australia, get drunk, do your drugs and feck off”

He is a good guy Ricky, but for something like this premiss to actually be funny you would need Doug Stanhope up there. No sugarcoating the ugly.

I found this to be truly hilarious. I followed the live blog on the guardian for a bit and the journalist was ridiculously bitter about Gervais, as have many journalists been. Many of the reviews after were saying how shit he was. Yet almost everyone I know who watched it, and most comment sections, are just saying he was the only good thing about the Globes and the only reason to watch. Just shows how out of touch the media is. Such a self feliaciating industry.

I never watch these things and I happened to catch it tonight just because it was the same channel as the Eagles-Seahwaks game. And I was just keeping it on as background noise at first until I heard the jokes. Tuned in without blinking until he was done. Was glad he roasted them too as I can’t stand how smug Hollywood is.

Similar to how the media panned Chappelle's special while it got rave reviews from fans.

I recommend you just listen to the monologue. The crowd reaction ruins it.

This monologue was, as Bill Burr says, "low fat". He nailed almost every joke (delivery, tone, punchline).

Anything that calls out Corden for being the c*nt he is gets my vote.

I also still really like Gervais, which seems to be something that's decreasing as a popular thing these days, and I've no idea why, cause he's the same he was 15 years ago.

I’m gonna watch this later, but everyone seems to be raving about it. More so than the other times he’s hosted.

It was a bit long i thought, but pretty good. Some of the jokes are brutal though, but more power to him

Peoples tastes change?

I love that he keeps getting these gigs because ratings, but everyone attending must be shitting themselves that they are next in his cross hairs.

I don't keep up with the Golden Globes, but doesn't he host it every year, and insults everyone everytime?

You'd think they'd stop hiring him to host it if they're not a fan of his jokes! Then again, I guess they like the attention he brings over to it?

Watched his Humanity show the other day which is some of the most brilliant and thoughtful stand-up comedy I've seen. Will be watching this tonight.

I watched that the other month, the dogs and their jobs joke was brilliant.

His monologue last night was amazing.

Was there some hinting to Di Caprio being into underage girls?

Meh it was ok. Basically just taking obvious pot shots at celebs. Funny in parts but hardly redefining the craft of hosting or stand up.

Not necessarily underage girls but young ladies definitely. To normal people like us it would be viewed as banter but these sensitive Hollywood types are a different matter I guess, but yeah, a really good joke at Leo's expense, doubled down when he mentioned Prince Andrew in the same breath. To be fair to Leo he seemed to take it pretty well.
