State of the club when even a club servant like Young wants out
It's his last chance to play abroad, if we're talking about the likes of Italy and not about China or MLS. It's hard to say no to.

Anybody really surprised? He gets abused every week by the fanbase.

He's no longer first choice and he's got a chance to go and play for a title chasing team, I don't blame him one bit.

We should have got rid of him in the summer and promoted Laird in the first place.

Let's hope Matic forces our hand also! the club seem happy to rely on keeping old players around.

Would rather sell Shaw first rather than Young and keep him as cover for Williams but apparantly he doesn't even want to be on the bench anymore.

I don't blame him for wanting to go play at ambitious club over a stagnant one for the remainder of his career

Wishing away Matic when no one is seemingly coming in is beyond madness. Unless you want to see the second half of the season be an even bigger crash and burn than it currently looks like being.

Surely we didn’t offer a new contact? Why do we insist on rewarding mediocrity? The Phil Jones new contract was utterly bizarre.

I don't mean January I mean the summer.

The club needs to be forced into action. The money is there but they don't want to spend it.

Erm... but our (successful) attempt to keep him until the summer would be to do absolutely nothing...
@Pexbo Well I think everyone realises that keeping player against his wishes will mostly result in his head not being on point for the rest of the season, since we made it clear in the past it is going to be his final season with us. In order to improve his morale as payback for staying here we had no choice but to throw a last ditch extension at him.

I think we'll see change in the summer, I can't see anything but a disastrous few months now. Not that I have any hopes the changes will be well carried out and turn this club around though.

Young's time at United is up, the only reason I am worried about him leaving in Jan is the fact that we won't replace him and continue to thin out an already thread bare squad.

However, regardless of his averageness, he was always a good pro and versatility player for us. It's sad that I would rather keep young than a lot of the other squad members, it just shows the terrible quality in the side.

So letting him go on a free is good business sense? The Glazers are just protecting an assets value and if he’s no longer considered good enough I’m sure there are teams willing to spend 10 million or so on Jones!

We might be waiting a while on that.

The Jones and especially Mata contract extensions were bizarre. Mata at the time made a bit of sense, as we need #10s. But he barely plays now. Whatever value he may have had at the time is long gone.

And paying him 100k a week? What are those clubs tell us? No one in their right mind will pay him even half of his wages and he will surely won’t willing accept lower salary. How it is a good business to keep this dross?

The Caf is a strange place he was the most hated man after Woodward for a long time but now we need him...
Hope he leaves for Inter and has a good outing there, we lot need to make up our minds.

He's been replaced by a 19-year old academy product that's better than him in every aspect of the game. It's only natural that he wants to move on. Wish Mata would do the same.
It's gonna be tough to get a top club to fork up the money for Mata or pay him what we do.

Yes, we armortized his transfer a long time ago. At this point we are wasting money on his wage.

Wait what?

When has he ever been more hated than the likes of Pogba, Alexis, Lingard or Lukaku?

Think most fans have had a healthy respect for his contributions to the club and for being one of the last remnants of when we were actually a top side on the pitch irregardless of the criticism over his ability as he's gotten older.

Never once thought of Young to be 'hated' by the fans

As much as Young's time was up a long time ago, he's one of those players that I will be sorry to see the back off. He's given so much to the team and always been 100% committed, even when his fading ability was clearly detrimental.

There was a time, when he didn't seem able to stop diving, when I wanted him gone. Credit to him, he cut it out of his game and toughened up big time.

You’ve just reinforced my point. Giving him a new contact and selling him is fair enough, that is good business. But the point is that he’s still here and starting games at home to Manchester City.

No. The forum has respected Youngs career but felt that he needed to be moved on. I don't think his professionalism or value over the 10 years has been ridiculed. He deserves a lot of credit for what he's done for us and he will be remembered as such when he leaves. Sure its a couple years too late but that won't decide how hel be respected.

He's been crap. Will be remembered for a couple of goals against Arsenal and nothing else. I'll be happy to see the back of his constant moaning at teammates despite making mistake after mistake himself.

Agree. He really turned his career around here, after looking as good as gone around 2014. Reinvented himself as a pretty good full back imo, and was brilliant under Jose. Fair play to him, and after 9 years and at his age I see why he’d want one last crack at a title in a new league for a top club.

Let’s be real the only reason to consider holding on to him is because we don’t have much experience in the squad.

Or they don’t want to spend more money to replace him.

The fact that our club captain is pushing for a move and refusing to play is damning for Ole. Reminds me of the Vidic situation with Moyes. :(

This is complete rubbish. He will have no value on the balance sheet as they amortise the transfer fee over the lifetime of his original contract. That has already gone.

He has always been a pretty decent player for Utd. I know he gets a lot of stick but he has been dependable most of the time. And I dont think anyone can accuse him of not giving 100%

Utd feels like such a toxic place at this moment and a chance to play in Italy for a top club. I can understand why he might want to take that opportunity.

Mad to think he is into his 9th season now. Where has the time gone :(

I was a huge fan of his before and right after his injury but he's done nothing but regress and disappoint while putting on weight ever since the season we finished 2nd. He's looked a shell of himself under Ole and has become our least effective LB by far which is why I'd rather play and keep Young over him

Am I correct in thinking we can keep him until the summer and he is allowed to only talk to European clubs this January?

We can let him go when his contract is up which is the summer or respect the service hes given us allow him to be sold in January. It's completely up to us isn't it? What is this contract offer from us all about?
