Bruno might be an upgrade on Lingard, but I would not expect him to have a immediate impact on the squad in January. He is going to need time to adjust to English football, so we might as well sign him in the summer. The story was that he was offered to us, but it seems more like we where used to spike up the price for Bruno, or Solskjaer did not like what he saw in the Porto-Sporting game, as this story seems pretty dead in the water right now. But maybe something will come of it next week, I dont know.

Also Lingard is not as worthless in Solskjaer eyes as we make him out to be, and will make do for the rest of the season, even though he needs long term replacing.
The domino effect of buying him in this window and him having a positive impact is worth the risk and outlay. He could get the goal that secures 4th place who knows. He could convince Pogba to stay if he really settles quickly. Who knows.

4th place could also mean us landing our main targets in the summer..

The Athletic did a great piece showing that spending in Jan to deliver more points over the rest of the season delivers such a poor return on investment. Buying anyone to save your season is naive.

Your first suggestion does not make a lot of sense. If he would require time to settle, why would we wait til the summer to sign him. Its surely better to sign him as soon as possible to get starteed with the "settling in" period.

Bruno Fernandes is not worth that price tag at all, in fact this season he has been kinda meh. Sporting has a very very weak side, that's why he was always shining last season, playing for a weak team with no pressure. Everytime he has played on the Nation Team he was very underwhelming.
That’s my worry after seeing him for Portugal. Loads of crap shots from distance and looks to have a low bottom level. Fans will lose patience with him quickly if he plays like that and the pressure builds on the player.

If we pay £60m plus it’s a panic buy. No two ways about it.

I made a joke the other when that rumour about Lingard being involved in an offer for Maddison surfaced, how Jesse would feel he could get the last laugh on the fans who hate him by sticking 2 fingers up and turning down any deal that helped us get one of our targets.

Feel sorry for Jesse because he's had some trouble, but he doesn't seem able to cope with the pressure of playing for Utd when the going gets tough. I'll feel sad if he can't/doesn't make a success of himself here, which seems unlikely with his alignment to Raiola. And also takes away any sympathy for him.

Right now, with Raiola in his corner, I hope we don't include him in any deal for Bruno if we are serious about signing him, because now there is even more chance we'll get f****d over

We were after him in the summer so it's not. They were asking for to much and now they are more reasonable it seems. It would be a great buy, Pogba staying or not we need more creativity from CM.

If we sign him during the summer he will get to do pre-season with the team, and so have time to adjust to how football is played here. Its different for someone like Maguire, who have played at top level in English football for years, so we could sign him a week before the season started, and he just settled in straight away.

Reasons not to sign him in January is the price, he is being quoted for £50m, now the journalist might just pull these sums form thin air, but that is a ridiculous price to pay for Bruno. Sporting fans might justify the price as much as they want, but it does not look like we are paying up, and we should not, as he is nowhere close to being as good as someone like Bernardo Silva.

Imagine wanting to wait till the summer if we can sign him now. Bizarre. Even if it takes him awhile to settle it's still going to be better than our current laughable options.

He would need to play games, not training sessions. The price is also lower than what was quoted in the summer.

How would it be a panic buy ? He is a player we need and anyone half decent is around 50 mil

Much like Maguire. Probably not worth THAT amount of money but we really are in a desperate position in midfield so we'll end up paying 65 mil for him
How much he's worth when Fred was 50m, and an unknown CB Lindelof was 35m 3 years ago.

Haven't read that article, but logically if a player improves your team (and you would've bought that player in the summer anyway), why does it not make sense to buy him earlier? That way, even if he doesn't contribute this season, he'll have had six more months to settle and integrate into the squad.

If Bruno is signed, I don't expect him to save the season because this season is already a write-off, but he will definitely improve us. That's all I want/expect.

Just sign the bastard, I need some good news.
This times a million, just desperate for some fecking good news. This is the football equivalent of the rent being due 5 months ago and there just not being any jobs about.

By all accounts we balked at their valuation but here we are apparently going to pay it, even when he’s not been as good this season as last.

It's all speculation though . We have no idea if we even went near him last summer and tbh he's on track to have a even better scoring season than last . If we buy him he most definitely isn't a panic buy

I think he gives us a better chance of getting us into the CL next season. In some ways, that could be considered resurrecting the season.

Given how we've been for most of the season, salvaging top 4/winning Europa would be a minor miracle - we're so inconsistent and relying on our front three to make up for the lack of quality in the rest of the team. Hopefully Williams gets a run at LB to give us more thrust going forward, especially against the smaller teams.

Sure, I hope that can happen, but I'm not placing that expectation upon him. United just need to sign the damn player already and we'll go from there. I'm sick of wishful thinking.

Silas seems resigned to losing him, and to us according to the quotes from Filipe Dias

If we are offering players as part of the deal... I'd have Rojo further down the list. Lingard, Jones, Matic (not in January) and Bailly. Maybe even Gomes with a buyback clause ....but like many posters...feck it just pay the cash and get it over the line Woody. We need something to lift us for the rest of the season.

Getting an opinion from a benfica fan related to any sporting player when they never had a world class player coming from their ranks and only joke of players like Felix and sanches unlike Sporting with Figo and Ronaldo. I wouldn’t believe him too much what he said when Fernandes was one of the best players for sporting before they disbanded 2 years ago.

There's only one United!
Also this might help. Sporting are in negotiations *allegedly* with a striker by the name of Andrez Sporar (I know..wtf is that) apparently the funds to buy Sporar will be with the money we get from Bruno Fernandes. So IF we see Sporar in Lisbon or a deal soon to be confirmed then that must signal that Bruno Fernandes was indeed sold.

This of course assuming the media is correct on the interest of Sporar.

So this is a deal too look out for as it may play hand in hand with any deal involving Bruno.
Just want to tell you '' Thank You '' for keeping us updated on the Portuguese side of the story. :)

Not to mention our chances in the Euro cup, right now we have a mudfield held together by sticking plaster and Gum, a great perfomrance from Mata against Norwich doesn't do much to paper over the cracks, hell even if we can finish strong 5th it is a positive for improving the squad next season

Inter Milan are going to be a tough side to face, you know they'll be up for it if Conte finds out he draws us. So will the likes of Lukaku and Sanchez.

We'll need all the help we can get.
