I don't like the way Bruno takes penalties

For me he was MOTM today but i have some criticism of the way he takes penalties.

I watched him taking them for Sporting for some time before he joined us and he was very lucky in Portugal with a number of them and the 'help' of dodgy goalkeepers.
I knew exactly how and where he was going to kick this today and any PL goalkeeper who had seen his penalties before would have had a great chance of saving this one - the good thing is that Foster seems not to have watched him before.

The next penalty we'll get will be crucial for Bruno and, i feel, he should not continue with his hop prior to his kick as it takes the impetus off his penalty kick.
 
Watching a grown-ass man do a hop, skip and jump in the run up to taking a penalty is somewhat disturbing on the eyes, it has to be said, but we can't really complain so long as he converts them.
 
I've seen a few of his pens before and I got the impression he's quite adept at altering what he does at the very end of the rather baffling process.

Is the point of that penalty taking style not to read which way the keeper is going?
 
I can't believe this thread.

There's a guy at Chelsea called Jorginho (ever heard of him?) who's pretty much carved a niche with this technique.
 
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Foster has had a quick rundown of our players' penalties, Bruno included, with the GK coach or whoever does analysis for Watford.
 
Bit like the way Jorginho takes them who like Bruno has a very good conversion rate from the spot

Personally don’t care how he approaches them. Long run up, short run up, stutter, hop, Zaza/Pogba tip-toe, cartwheel, backflip, worm dance or whatever other approach. Just as long as he scores, that will be all that matters to me.
 
Jorginho has scored 8/8 (6 for Chelsea, 2 for Italy) this season using the same technique.
 
The technique is almost laughable on the eye but there's method in the madness. His delay gave him time to see the keeper commit to the left and he slotted it right. If the keeper had gone the other way, so would he.

That's a very good number which he converted but the level of the goalkeepers in Portugal is not so great.
I obviously still hope that his way of taking them will keep on baffling PL keepers! :D
 
It looks like a dubious technique but his stats and Jorginho's conversion rates are very good - i might reserve any criticism until he actually lets us down
 
Like others have mentioned, Jorginho has similar technique and he never misses. Strange thing to complain about.

If he misses a couple, fair enough. But by all accounts, this style has been working for him

You know what it’s like though, soon as he misses one it’s the worst technique ever and he needs to change it.

personally think it’s very smart, only concern with it is a very tall goalkeeper who’s happy to stay in the middle and attempt to dive after the balls been struck, as it’s not possible to get an immense amount of power on that type of PK. I think Tim Krul would do quite well against this technique, not sure if he’s faced one yet.

Just expressing what i think when watching him take them, that's all.
 
If he scores the vast majority of them it really doesn't matter.
 
Today is a prime example. When he hopped the keeper shifted the direction he was going to dive. If you're able to make that direction adjustment at the last moment with no issues, who gives a crap how it looks?

Jorginho does the same thing and it works.

On a regular penalty, you choose a place and the keeper chooses his. Statistically speaking, he's more likely to guess the right way to dive if the penalty is the traditional way. This penalty technique gives the kicker the advantage if it can be done correctly.
 
I was more disturbed by Mason Greenwood doing that embarrassing love heart celebration a la Di Maria/Bale

My only worry is you take them like that at a club as scrutinised as United and the first time you miss one it's all the media want to talk about. As long as he doesn't get phased by the increased pressure that'll put on him, then he's grand. If he does it could all end in tears.

Can only hope for the best.

The problems start when the keeper doesn't move from the middle, then the kicker must have already decided what his options are.
 
I dont like the way we're winning games back to back. Sickening behaviour really, needs to be sorted ASAP!
