Seeing how there's two active topics about him, I thought Götze (possibly in the Ballon d'Or sphere) was significantly more talented than Reus (speed merchant) during their first season together at Dortmund.

I find Zidane a tad overrated, he was class for sure and had those big game moments, but take an AM like Zico would could do everything and score goals galore.

How was Ibra not world class?

Compare his goals with almost everyone you listed and the fact he won more titles for his clubs than almost anyone in history too. Year in year out hardly got injured and won more individual awards than a lot of those players combined.

We also saw Rooney and him play together. How you think Rooney was a better footballer is beyond me.

It’s not as bad as when 90’s kids say Ronaldo 9 was a better player than Messi though.
Umm we saw Rooney and him play together when Rooney was at least 2 years past his prime. At his peak I'd take the likes of Rooney or Aguero or RVN over Zlatan every day.

Zlatan won trophies because he was invariably playing for the top team in the land and he massively inflated his numbers by playing for PSG in that farmers league. In the CL, he only ever played in one semi final, if I'm not mistaken, and that too for Pep's all conquering Barca team. He was by all means a fantastic player but nowhere near as good as he thinks himself to be.

I thought Schürrle was better than both around 14-15.

So yeah, André Schürrle is another one i overrated.

funny Zidane gets a few mentions and Figo doesn't. They were (almost) seen as equally good but whenever i watched that Real team. Zidane was a god and Figo also played.
The thing about Zidane is that there is a misconception regarding his inconsistency. The reason people complained about it is that he gave the impression that he could always deliver a 10 but seemed perfectly happy to just give a 7 rated performance. Zidane wasn't a player that would fluctuate between 8 and 4 but 6 and 10, he always remained at the top end, he was always one of the best performer on the pitch. I have seen Messi and Ronaldo have more terrible games than Zidane. The actually knock against Zidane concerns his temper for a playmaker he was a bit too susceptible to get booked or red carded.

Disagree with that, that Zidane was an inconsistent player is a fair criticism I think. But he had a capacity, when he switched it on, to totally dominate games and opponents, and was the ultimate big game player. Which has led to this slight over rating of him. Still a fantastic player though, of course.

I know I've posted here before but just remembered a player who I really thought would go far.

Phillip Wollscheid, a defender who suddenly came through at Nuremberg and did really well in his first season. Got a big money move to Leverkusen and it seemed everything was on track for him to become a German national and class player.

He ended up not performing that well at Leverkusen. Had a decent start at Stoke but started getting injured soon after and then retired at age 29.

Couldn't imagine how terrible the performance would be if there's a team like this:

GK - Bravo
RB - Ramos
CB - Stones
CB - Maguire
LB - Marcelo
RM - Muller
CM - Kante
CM - Kroos
LM - J. Rodriguez
ST - Chicharito
ST - Jesus
Thomas Muller? He kinda looks like a lanky donkey, but I think he's brilliant. Bayern went 87 matches without losing when he scored (82 wins), the record was broken last year.

I find the Riquelme hype a little puzzling, surely he should have done better for Barca if he was that good.

I think for me it’s probably Memphis Depay. I was convinced we had signed a future world beater when we outdid PSG on his transfer and after seeing his goals in Holland. Truthfully he was poor in a Utd shirt despite a few promising displays. I’m glad he’s not gone on to have a decent career and I hope he could still yet move to a bigger club as I like his game.

I mean with my namesake I suppose I also have to say Januzaj, he had all the talent in the world and it’s a real shame he didn’t have the drive to match it.

Probably some of you think of it and don't want to say it out loud of fear the majority in this forum will be reaping them off , but I am going to say it anyway.Messi.
How can anyone say Messi is overrated. He’s one of the most talented players the world has ever seen and has achieved pretty much everything in football. What’s your reasoning for including him?

Also funny people including Ronaldo too, mental.

I don't think some people understand the point of the thread.

I used to overrate Welbeck, but I still think he would be a far better player if it wasn't for injuries(not just the recent long term injuries, he's had many when he was younger too). But even without the injuries now I don't think he would be that good as I expected him to be.
Same here. I had always admired Welbeck with his composure in front of goal, lovely shooting technique, as well as movement off the ball. He had a pretty good spell during the Christmas in 13/14 and I had always thought he's a better player than the highly rated Chicharito. It's a shame that van Gaal got rid of him for Falcao and he had been suffering from recurrent injuries since then.

We don't disagree then because I didn't argue against the inconsistency claim I simply described the type of inconsistency, I agree with it but it's not an inconsistency between good and bad. I also believe that he is overrated which is something that I said multiple time and I strongly believe that Platini was a better player.

I'm another who overrated Gotze. I thought he was all set to become the next best player in the world. Unfortunately injuries and Bayern ruined him.

Gerrard is massively overrated by some. Again great player but he also was never consistently amazing. He had couple of games where he looked great and then was just average to good in others. Maybe if he were playing with better players things could have been different but even then the way some portray him as the best cm and compare him to the likes of zidane is a joke.

Cleverley. After a season on loan in championship where he scored a good number of goals...and having watched him in reserves I thought he was gonna be our answer to Frank Lampard. I really wanted him to excel and I remember his assist to well beck I think in his first few games and thought...here we go. By the end I couldn’t bare the site of him in our 11 and just wanted him gone. Over rated big time. Similarly Pereira. Who looked amazing in reserves and had a good spell in a weak Granada team. Expected him to come back and be a good player for us.
Thinking Cleverley would be our Lampard was a bit over, but imo he was actually a good player. His mentality and work rate were as good as Herrera, it's just that people had a higher bar and rated players using different standards by then. He was having a fantastic loan spell at Wigan, so good that Roberto Martinez decided to recruit him again at Everton. Pereira's a different story, he actually struggled at Granada and failed to fight for a place.

Don't people have to rate him in order for him to be over rated? Luiz is horrible and always has been. Funny thing is, he's a good footballer. I just don't think central defense is his position. Should be a DM with players behind him. Same goes for Sergio Ramos, who in my opinion is the most over rated player of all time. He is quite possibly one of the worst defenders I have ever seen. I'm talking Phil Jones level here defending. Ramos is another who should be a midfielder and not a teams last line of defense...
I actually don't think Luiz is as horrible as many people suggest. He's had plenty of solid games gone unnoticed and the media love to make a scene when he makes a minor mistake. His ball playing ability is never appreciated, despite he's obviously a better ball player than the likes of Maguire and Stones.

I agree that Ramos has been one of the worst defenders ever. His defensive positioning, tackling and decision are just terrible. People just hype him because he scores big goals. If he were playing in a smaller side like this, his career would be screwed up.

Sigurdsson for me.

I thought he was an exceptional number 10. Always involved in goals and passing going through him and dictating the play. Maybe I wanted to believe that as I miss those kind of 10’s in the modern game.

The more I have watched him at Everton though, the more I see someone who keeps himself amongst the goals through set pieces and his lack of mobility can actually hurt the teams performances.

No doubt a great weapon on his day because of his consistent delivery, but not the 10 I used to want at United. I pretty severely overrated him.
Typical player who is only useful in dead ball, another example is James Rodriguez.

Many players in that title-winning Dortmund team were indeed overrated, such as Gotze, Reus, Sahin, Gundogan and Kagawa. They just thrived under Klopp and somehow fitted to his system, but most of them failed after leaving and Lewandowski was the only successful one.

I could or should have been more explicit. I have seen many people claim that he is a top 3 all time player which to me is a scandalous claim. So he is definitely overrated by some but he was a great player and one that had less bad games than some of the best players ever.

It's fair based on how they performed at Real post 2001 when Zidane joined. Figo was more of an inside-right by that point in his career, rather than the swashbuckling winger of Barcelona where IMO he hit his peak.

Anderson.

I made an incredibly confident wager with a friend that he would win the Balon D'Or.

Still getting that one in the neck.
Well, I rated Anderson when he arrived at Utd, and I don't think I was wrong in a footballing sense - his cheery energy and willingness to drive forward were genuinely enjoyable to watch. He had pace and great technical ability. What you can't account for are character failings - in Anderson's case, but the same would apply to a lot of other overrated players, weak mentality and lack of personal discipline, aggravated by cruciate injuries (possibly because of the same lack of discipline) and pure bad luck (he was in a serious car crash). The same applies to, for example, Januzaj, who showed every sign technically of being a top player but coped badly with his elevation to the first team and took a long time to mature.

Both failed to fulfill their potential - there's still time left for Januzaj - but I don't think I overrated them at the time. The truly overrated players, for me, are the likes of Pogba, whose statistics, we are told, prove their high rating but somehow only manage to exert a baneful and negative influence on the team.

I know a few Liverpool fans who at pretty much any point over the last 20+ years thought they had the best striker in world football. Same with most other positions also.
It's a fecking mental illness. The trumpers of football supporters.

That is a very good one! For a long time since we've signed him he was considered the our brightest youth prospect since Pogba & Morrison.

I mean, when a player from your academy scores a goal like this in the U-20 World Cup final

Or provides good performances against Madrid and Barca playing for a mediocre side...

And then he comes to your first team and suddenly you see a limited mediocre player. It took me a while to adjust, I had such high hopes for him.

Overrated is always a perceptive thing. Some of it is one's own fault, because of having high expectations based on media/fan talk.
So not expecting to debate on it.

Bale - He has medals to show for it, and the goals in CL finals, but overall with all his injuries and his contributions in the Real team, I think he has too much hype in British media. And add the fans wanting him here every summer, because 'He was definitely going to turn us into league winners. Let us ignore what is happening in Spain" talk.

Martial - He has loads of potential, but I don't think his hype matches his on field exploits. His fanboys have blamed everyone in the team - coaches, tactics, teammates and all, but I still don't see him as someone who will tear it apart in the league.

Luke Shaw -Young player who came with awesome potential. But his hype once again was well over what he was showing on the field. Fans went gaga over his ability to blast forward along the left side. What I saw was him abandoning the LB position to overtly try and contribute to the attack, while our other 3 defenders weren't talented enough to plug the gap. And add to that, Shaw had shi**y crossing talent, which many times made the whole running forward futile and we were left with just gaps at the back. So many years without a competition in the position, yet I feel we still need an upgrade in that position. But every decent game he has, we see fans saying MOTM performance and so convinced we are set for years to come.

Needless to say, every time the likes of Martial/Shaw pull on our shirt, I want them to simply destroy the opposition. And become the best in the business.
