It's easy to compare Boris to Trump at times, but really, Trump is just in a class of idiocy all of his own.

Whilst no fan of Boris, there actually seems to be point/method/thought (even if it isn't necessarily good) behind his decisions/bluster/bafoonary... with Trump though, he's just an actual moron.

The absolute state of people who are unwilling to acknowledge that him holding that Bible is just a photo-op. I refuse to believe you can be this thick. Okay, I don't, at all, but still, what the feck went wrong with the upbringing of these absolute clowns. And it's not just over there, as a form of self flagellation I read a sort of Dutch alt-right website / forum to work myself in to a fit of rage by reading these comments (I used to contribute, but was obviously ban'd) and people there also idolize Trump unconditionally. What the feck is wrong with the world. We suck.

Where is the so called opposition.
Where is everyone?
Surely we should have a bunch of politicians trying to calm everything down by now and making sure protesters can go about portraying peacefully.

No. Just pure, cowardly, self aggrandising scum.

Assistant Rector St Johns Church said:
Friends, I am ok, but I am, frankly shaken. I was at St. John’s, Lafayette Square most of the afternoon, with fellow clergy and laypeople - and clergy from some other denominations too. We were passing out water and snacks, and helping the patio area at St. John’s, Lafayette square to be a place of respite and peace. All was well - with a few little tense moments - until about 6:15 or so. By then, I had connected with the Black Lives Matter medic team, which was headed by an EMT. Those people were AMAZING. They had been on the patio all day, and thankfully had not had to use much of the eyewash they had made. Around 6:15 or 6:30, the police started really pushing protestors off of H Street (the street between the church and Lafayette Park, and ultimately, the White House. They started using tear gas and folks were running at us for eyewashes or water or wet paper towels. At this point, Julia, one of our seminarians for next year (who is a trauma nurse) and I looked at each other in disbelief. I was coughing, her eyes were watering, and we were trying to help people as the police - in full riot gear - drove people toward us. Julia and her classmates left and I stayed with the BLM folks trying to help people. Suddenly, around 6:30, there was more tear gas, more concussion grenades, and I think I saw someone hit by a rubber bullet - he was grasping his stomach and there was a mark on his shirt. The police in their riot gear were literally walking onto the St. John’s, Lafayette Square patio with these metal shields, pushing people off the patio and driving them back. People were running at us as the police advanced toward us from the other side of the patio. We had to try to pick up what we could. The BLM medic folks were obviously well practiced. They picked up boxes and ran. I was so stunned I only got a few water bottles and my spray bottle of eyewash. We were literally DRIVEN OFF of the St. John’s, Lafayette Square patio with tear gas and concussion grenades and police in full riot gear. We were pushed back 20 feet, and then eventually - with SO MANY concussion grenades - back to K street. By the time I got back to my car, around 7, I was getting texts from people saying that Trump was outside of St. John’s, Lafayette Square. I literally COULD NOT believe it. WE WERE DRIVEN OFF OF THE PATIO AT ST. JOHN’S - a place of peace and respite and medical care throughout the day - SO THAT MAN COULD HAVE A PHOTO OPPORTUNITY IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH!!! PEOPLE WERE HURT SO THAT HE COULD POSE IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH WITH A BIBLE! HE WOULD HAVE HAD TO STEP OVER THE MEDICAL SUPPLIES WE LEFT BEHIND BECAUSE WE WERE BEING TEAR GASSED!!! I am deeply shaken. I did not see any protestors throw anything until the tear gas and concussion grenades started, and then it was mostly water bottles. I am shaken, not so much by the taste of tear gas and the bit of a cough I still have, but by the fact that that show of force was for a PHOTO OPPORTUNITY. The patio of St. John’s, Lafayette square had been HOLY GROUND today. A place of respite and laughter and water and granola bars and fruit snacks. But that man turned it into a BATTLE GROUND first, and a cheap political stunt second. I am DEEPLY OFFENDED on behalf of every protestor, every Christian, the people of St. John’s, Lafayette square, every decent person there, and the BLM medics who stayed with just a single box of supplies and a backpack, even when I got too scared and had to leave. I am ok. But I am now a force to be reckoned with.

CNN even said that holding the Bible was just a photo op. This was his response for reports of him hiding in his Bunker.

Guess he was more worried about #Bunkerboy and #BunkerBitch trending on twitter.

It really isnt about facts anymore - its about deamonising the other side of the debate and enraging his own supporters... in that context (which is admittedly a shitty context for a country to be in) it makes sense

I don't understand what they think it was if not a photo op? He walked to the church specifically to get a photo did he not?

Should check his hand for burn marks. Unholy forces aren't supposed to be able to pick up bibles, are they? Or is that just vampires?

The Onion couldn't write a more bonkers piece; Chris Morris couldn't get near what we're seeing; there's a president of the United States who clears a path towards the nearest usable church, with violence against peaceful protesters, to seize a photo opportunity.

What's more, the fact he did so uninvited and has been condemned by the bishop of said church, will be drowned out or at least carry nowhere near the weight of the imagery to his supporters.

This really is a case of the lunatic coming in to run the asylum. He has long since ceased to be a figure to lightly ridicule and parody. He's very much a fascist who has become more dangerous by the month as his actions are costing lives and divides on an epic scale.

Feels as though he's gone from the moron spitting hot air and nonsense to a very dangerous, pivotal figure in the blink of an eye.

Correct. That's the shit he's been dealing with during the day. Got up, saw #bunkerboy trending, and decided I will show them who is in the bunker. Oh, I might take that bible with me, so it would look epic.

This is beyond bizarre. It is both hilarious and at the same time depressing as feck seeing the whole thing from the distance. How the feck can anyone support him? A deranged monkey would look less ridiculous.

It will be interesting to see how those who believe themselves to be neutral and reactionary process this whole affair once the dust settles.

His hardliners, there's nothing he can or will do that will alter their opinion of him other than back down from his position - of course - but for everybody else, there must surely be a moment of contemplation and reflection as these events unfold and Trump reveals there is no depths he won't sink to, even using, what for some of them, is the good book and religion as a means to an end. That after blasting a path through peaceful protesters to get to the church, no less.

Some will be more bothered by that than the racial or policing issues, whether that sways them remains to be seen, however.

This is where I'm at with him. I just don't understand how large parts of the American public can condone and support Trump. He's a total embarrassment and has no redeeming leadership qualities whatsoever.

I guess this is the reason I worry for America as the support he gets doesn't reflect well on the people and shows there's clearly massive divisions and unrest within society. Don't know how you fix that.

I thought I'd wake up today and read absolutely damning condemnation from Trump's political opponents, especially the leading ones like Pelosi - where is it? How can they be so meek?

Those who constantly champion freedoms to the extreme of a right to bear arms seem surprisingly quick to shout down the right of people to protest peacefully.

It's even more bizarre when you consider the same group have been complaining about lockdown health measures.

It’s either piss weak, or they’re letting him dig his own grave and letting the public speak for them.

It irks me that none of the former Presidents are unified in condemning him. Nothing would say more than Clinton, Obama and Bush standing side by side and informing the nation what they think.

Someone above put a tweet from his son Donald and there is a huge amount of them screaming about "the greatest president" they ever had. It is hard to even read.

As you say, there is such an obvious, massive division inside that country that you have to question them going forward if this continues.

I guess it’s early hours on the east coast, perhaps we’ll hear from them early this afternoon UK time, but Pelosi is feckless anyway.

I dont see how America heals from this. The divisions are simply too deep. Like, I genuinely think it would be better all round (but obviously not going to happen) if they just divided the country in two, and let the citizens pick which ideology they want to follow.

What could possibly go wrong with that idea?

Steptoe and son tried that and it didn't work - one of them kept switching over the telly channels.

Again, im not really sure what the solution is otherwise. The divisions are too far gone. I want to believe that these protests are as simple as people vs government, but the unfortunate truth is that there are still a good 30% of the country (i.e. the trumpers) who will be sitting at home hoping to see some mass shootings of protesters. How do you reconcile those mindsets?

Change mostly comes from the top and trickles down - the lunatic in charge has galvanised, incentivised and triggered so many with his rhetoric and constant gas (and green) lighting. That empowerment is diluted without such an insane figurehead. These people don't suddenly disappear, nor do their views change, particularly, but they're not emboldened nor being told that their course of action is acceptable. Reining them in and figuratively putting some of the less hardlined back in their box is paramount.

It would make a huge difference, and it's a start, but whilst Trump is in power, all bets are off as it's more of a certainty things will get worse, perhaps far worse (I won't even add 'before they get better' to the end of that sentence) and that's the first point of order to arrest and then at least put a band aid over the gaping wound, for as much good as that'll do.
