Television Overrated TV series

Since the "overrated movies" thread got so popular I figured we need one for TV as well.

Disclaimers so that people don't start WW3:
1. 'Overrated' does not necessarily mean 'bad'. For instance: if a TV show is considered to be 'one of the best ever' but you just find it to be "good", then it's overrated in your opinion.
2. It's possible to find something overrated and still like it a lot.

The Wire. I liked it for the most part but many people seem to think it's the best thing ever and I just don't get it

You're lucky J.K. Rowling chose this day to stomp into the transphobia battleground, as this comment might now be consigned to a background murmur, rather than the centre of global outrage.

Great production value, very enjoyable to watch, probably better than 90% of TV series. But one of the best ever? Not a chance.

The story telling is way too "classic" and the characters aren't very interesting. The sergeant(?) is your typical Hollywood hero who's borderline flawless. Most of the other soldiers are only defined by a few simple traits and not really fleshed out.

Breaking Bad is in the very good, but not one of the best ever category.
Game of Thrones was beautifully produced but got dumb way before everyone suddenly started hating on it in the last season.
Sons of Anarchy started out as an interesting idea, but turned out to be unbearably cheesy trash pretty quickly.

Breaking Bad. Enjoyable for the most part but the hype made the expectations far too high for me when I eventually watched it.

Also it doesn't get criticised enough for the large amount of filler episodes that do not advance the plot at all.

Sons of Anarchy.

Gang looks like it's in trouble...psych! It was all their plan and another few bikers roll in and save them. Rinse repeat for several more seasons.

I consider The Wire to be the best written TV series ever, but I get where you're coming from. The pace is very slow and visually it's extremely bland.

This as well.

But I'd personally place it in the bad category than overrated. I couldn't even finish the first season.

Dexter - even before the last episode was the epitome of an average and boring show.

Band of Brothers - at this point, most army tv shows that are revered fit into this category.

Only fools and Horses - doesn’t help that people who still love this are weapons.

Game of Thrones would have been the standard reply but seems like most people are aware of the nakedness of the emperor these days.
Yeah, I haven't seen a show lose so many fans so quickly before. Lost fans(the few who stuck with it) were split into two equally large groups of "haters and lovers" at the very least.

It is one of those ones where if it was released now then it probably wouldn’t be as revered and so watching it with modern eye I understand what you’re saying and even agree. But it is one of my favourite mini series ever. It’s one of the first great big budget mini series, it showed you could put a films budget in tv. I’m also a sucker for all things WW2.

But for your reasons exactly, I don’t rate the Pacific as much. Everything around the actual ear

Ozark. People seem to love it but it's just an inferior Breaking Bad.

Everything Phoebe Waller-Bridge has done. Fleabag was good (especially the 2nd season) if overrated whereas Killing Eve was just mildly-diverting guff. If you read The Guardian you'd think she's been recreating TV as a medium.

Stranger Things is kinda entertaining kids TV that somehow became a phenomenon.

Seinfeld. I keep trying with it, and I just don't get on with it. It seems to have the most overused laugh track of any TV show which makes it insufferable at times, and George is so deeply unlikable as a character, he might just be the original incel.

I like Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David generally, but I just can't get in to the show. I much prefer Curb Your Enthusiasm, because even though the fictitious Larry David is horrible, the tone of the show recognises he's horrible and you're never really rooting for him. I feel like Seinfeld wants you to root for George despite him being a twat.

Still, I'm not sure I think it's overrated. It's probably adequately rated, it was fairly groundbreaking for its time and has left a lasting legacy. I just find it grating whenever I try to get in to it.

The whole point of George is that you revel in his self-inflicted misery. He almost never wins. Even when he does win, he still ends up losing. Because he's George.

Killing Eve is definitely a recent one - I didn't even make it through the first season. We're clearly meant to be taken in by the quirkiness of it all, but that grew tiring very quickly for me. But the one that is definitely overrated for me (albeit still very good) is Deadwood. I've never understood how people can say it's the best ever. It's final season is an incomplete mess, and the first two seasons were pretty good, but not great (in my opinion, of course.) I also found the dialogue patterns to get very tiresome after a while.

I can't understand anybody calling The Wire overrated - it's 4th season is possibly the greatest thing I've ever seen, TV or film. The 5th season was a bit of a letdown though.

I'd love to know what shows people do rate if they shit on Band of Brothers
Not sure if you count my post as "shitting on Band of Brothers", but these are some of my favorites: Mr.Robot, Breaking Bad, True Detective(s1), The Wire, Chernobyl.

The Wire is great, but rating it higher than Sopranos is a classic case of overrating in my opinion - ref the good old Sopranos vs Wire discussion. Sopranos is on a whole other level, not sure if anything is quite up there over six seasons. A lot of good shows tend to dip into the bottomless pool of mediocrity after 2-3 seasons - I'd dump Handmaids tale in there for instance.

Band of Brothers is what it is, a series based on historical events and real people, and it's pretty accurate to be honest. Apart from a few sloppy CGI scenes it still is after 20 years one of the best WWII or any kinda war-related TV/movie production ever made, if not the best.

Friends, since it's apparently still very popular, must be the most overrated TV-show in history. Even the once universally adored intro song is kinda shite these days.

It took me until the 2nd season to proper get into it. Once I got the idea and understood the characters better it became absolutely fantastic for me.

Breaking Bad is in the very good, but not one of the best ever category.

Agreed on all 3.

Breaking Bad was enjoyable but there were a lot of points where characters would make moronic decisions just so that the plot can develop.

Game of Thrones got dumb as soon as they passed the books story wise. The writing immediately became less imaginative and a good vs evil vibe developed.

Sons of Anarchy I don't even know how I watched multiple seasons of, it's cheesy as hell

I second Only Fools and Horses (just not remotely funny) - I also thought Breaking Bad was incredibly boring and couldn't finish the first season.

The visual comment is an extremely odd criticism given what the show is about and the story it’s telling.

It’s almost better in its original 4:3 standard definition format for this exact reason.

Dexter - meh, predictable and dull after a while
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel - she just isn't funny
Workaholics - annoying and unlikeable
Friends - after season 4 they're just caricatures of themselves
Mindhunter - terrible dialogue and embarrassing title
Greys Anatomy - just plain boring
White Lines - my god, who the hell thought this was a good idea

Done.

Westworld was not as clever as I thought it was gonna be. Ended up massively disappointing.

The new Star Wars films - The Force Awakens in particular are massively overrated even if most people thought they were "ok". They are absolutely abysmal and managed to do the impossible and make the entire "Skywalker saga" unwatchable.
