Was inevitable, not trusted it seems and when rubbish like Lingard and Mata get chances over you I would do the same.
His loss. He ought to go to Spain to develop. There's much more space there and less of an emphasis on the physicality of the game (outside of clubs like Atletico, of course).
Holland or Spain would be best for him, I could see him popping up at Sporting as well though.
When you're watching dross like Lingard infront of you, you'd leave too.

I'm still convinced someone turned his head after pre-season.
Putting my United bias aside, Gomes would be bullied all day long in the prem. Once he gets physically stronger I'm sure he'll go on to have a good career and you never know he might do a Pogba and come back.
This is a fair point, but equally if he was deemed good enough to start matches for us as a number 10 or slightly deeper he would have. He was told to be more patient and he is unhappy doing that, so it's best he moves on. We could get bitten in the arse something rotten from this but in the moment it's difficult to say what could have been done differently if the player is not ready, notwithstanding severe doubts about Lingard/Pereira's quality.
Exactly what people said about Sancho. He wasn't getting minutes at United ahead of Mata Pereira and Lingard (even after outperforming some of them in preseason), best thing to do is leave after making his debut how many seasons ago.
It's a shame. He was identified as the figurehead of the revamped academy and youngest player to play for the club since Duncan Edwards. The club had big plans for him.
Shame it hasn't worked out for him at United. When a kid has been at the club so long and shown such potential, it's really sad to see it end like this.
I'm sure he'll look back at how much he's grown since he first joined the academy at 6 years old. At least 2 inches . . . . .

It’s a shame as he looks so natural on the ball but is just so tiny. He should go to America: the meat here is full of steroids and growth hormones.
The right move I think. He’s never going to play a lot in his preferred position as long as Bruno delivers, which means he will have a hard time getting enough minutes to develop properly. He‘l never be a success as a winger imo, so what can he do? Just a case of bad timing for all involved.
He's hardly been great shakes any time he has featured... And I can see why Ole was reluctant to pick a player who hadn't committed his future to the club.

Why would he stay, he was blocked from going out loan with assurances that we would get game time.
He has watched Mata, Lingard and Pereira put in crap performances for the entire season and still not get a chance to play.

Regardless if he makes it or not, this is another promising young player choosing to go elsewhere to further their career despite us offering him the chance to be here.
We've decided to take a new direction in club development since Ole came in, focussing primarily on young and upcoming players. But despite bringing in the likes of AWB and James, and signing Chong onto a longer contract, we're looking like missing out on more than we're bringing in. Haland chose Dortmund over us, Bellingham looks to be heading there too despite Fergie and the grand tour of Carrington. Now Gomes appears to be opting out.
Whether or not he makes it is still very much to be seen, but this is definitely a player who would fetch a decent fee be it now or a few years down the line. This will, and should, be seen as another example of mismanagement from the top if he goes.

It obviously feels that playing Lingard over him might've been the final straw. But he has been given a reasonable amount of opportunities in the first team. Hasn't really shown enough in my opinion.
Stupid decision he'll probably live to regret. He can't be that far off getting his chance if he has patience.

We know Ole doesn’t hesitate giving youth a chance, so that fact that Lingard and Mata play ahead of him is an observation against Gomez and not the club.
If he was ever going to make it at United it would have been abit later like Lingard or McT. It’s his prerogative to seek minutes berore that, but I think he’ll end on the wayside like Januzaj. I can’t see him becoming a worldie
It really isnt. Its a case of the club telling him they wont be held ransom to a relative nobody with question marks over whether he would actually succeed at the club.
Januzaj at his age was a far better player.
Without knowing all the factors all I can say is good luck to him.
Fine. He got a great offer and if he was really that integral to the club at this stage he'd be playing more anyway. But he's not.

Meh. Not bothered tbh offered him a new deal he didn’t take it. Seems to have stagnated a bit the last couple of seasons anyway. He may reignite his career and become very good somewhere else who knows, good luck to him can’t sign them all.

When you say United is missing out on more than we're bringing in, you realise your numbers are comparing the transfers of United (one club) vs those of all the other clubs in the world?
Statistically one would expect that we'd always be missing out on more than we're bringing in.
Losing Gomes is disappointing though, however, he never really made any impact with the appearances that he did get.
Of course that's what it became in the short term, but in the long run he's a player who shouldn't have been allowed to let his contract run down like this. We should have been looking to get him on a reasonable contract 1/2 years ago with incentives to increase base wage depending on development. Again, no certainties he'll make it - and I suspect he ultimately won't reach the levels he could - but we're easily missing out on a potential £10m+ after all we've invested in him to get him to where he is now. Seeing him go for free is just bad business.
Of course you're going to miss out on players, but we're looking like missing out on players we really should be able to attract, and who are in turn choosing destinations that really shouldn't be seen as more attractive that Utd. Missing out on the likes of Bellingham and Haland to Dortmund in the space of a few months isn't a great sign, and will set a precedent to future prospects.
This is how I see it. We didn't want to give him a contract offer for him to be on the bench, I am sure the contract was in line with what Chong and Greenwood have so it would raise questions if he was paid more and not playing.
When has he been given the chance and shown he is worth the contract.
If it is not the money and playing time, which big club will give him playing time?
What is his best position? LW? CAM? If so, is he getting infront of Rashford Bruno? No, so he would be backup, but can we rely on him as a backup from what we have seen? No. So makes sense to let him go if he doesnt want to be here.
Some say he is Chelsea bound, well then he will get the money but defo not the playing time.
That's not a fair comparison. We gave lots of chances to young players and some have established themselves. Gomes was considered not ready this season and looking at his performances where he did play it makes sense.
I wish him well but i'm disappointed in him.
Just because we are seeking younger players doesn’t mean we can sign all of them!There is a real issue for top class 17-22 year old getting the required minutes they need to develop at an elite club. We’ve already seen that with the likes of Salah, Lukaku and DeBryne. Rashford, Martial and McTominay got theirs and we finished 4th or below most seasons partly because of it.
An elite club can field maximum 1 or 2 of these young players per game, else their overall standard suffers and they drop points. Eg City with Foden, United with Greenwood and Williams.
Im happy if OGS only goes after ‘first move’ players eg age 20-22 like AWB, Lindelof or Sancho, and planning for our own worldie home grown talent (mejri and others), using loans (eg Henderson) if needed to ensure they get minutes.
It would have been great to sign Haaland and Bellingham, but that would not have suited the players desired goals. It’s that simple.

Can't blame him he's not played enough mins throughout the season even at a point beyond us having Bruno and Pogba being injured. Reminds me of the situation with Pogba / Raphael and Scholes. I don't think managerially Ole will get the best out of him, we don't really play with fluid movement in the midfield it's mostly improvisation to create opportunities. He should be very selective about his next career move, Spain / Italy would do him good.
Only rumours, but apparently he wanted 50k a week.
People saying he hasn't performed when given the chance, has he really been given a proper chance? There are other young players who seem to have been given a lot more opportunity, even if they haven't hit the ground running.
I have great sympathy for him. Lest we forget, Ole blocked a few loan moves on the premise that Gomes would receive minutes. Those minutes never arrived, yet Ole was still reticent to sanction the loan move. Hardly a surprise that he's unwilling to sign a new contract.
Good luck to him. It's a shame he didn't get games ahead of Mata, Lingard and Periera - but we don't see what happens behind the scenes.
