Owen had an awful record but kept taking them like the self centred little shit he is.

I remember an advert for The Premiership (yes with Andy Townsend's tactics truck!) Years ago where they started the show by saying
"The 3 best strikers in the league step up to the spot, but only 1 scores, find out after the break"
Naturally it was Ruud, into the side netting, with Owen and Henry missing

This. I never felt good about seeing him step up for a spot kick.
Surprised how poor his record is. Also factoring in some they've taken for their national teams and Owen scored in the shoot outs from memory.

Fowler always had a good technique, slowly stepped up and just chip the ball into the corner after the keeper started diving so imagine he had good success rate.

Gerrard was more than capable of missing when he wanted to. He put one over at Ewood Park in Hodgson's last game as manager. Some think he did it on purpose to get him the boot.

Think Fowler's record was 20/24. Pretty solid.

City have some of the worst ones around. Sterling, Jesus, Mahrez, all pretty terrible.

100% he knifed him in the back that day, Gerrard always powerful to the bottom corner. Blackburn away strolls up and lifts it over the bar.

If Hodgson spoke to him ever again after that blatant miss he's a bloody mug.

Rooney seemed to miss a fair few but maintained duties for ages.

Berbatov with that daft chip in the cup semi final, think it was against Everton.

Edit, just rewatched it, wasn't a chip it was a lazy tap trying to be clever.

Mahrez for sure. Not forgiven him for that miss v Liverpool which cost me 500 quid as had City win/winning goal being penalty.

Think he also missed a few for Leicester.

Not sure about bad takers, I do recall always feeling super confident that Eric and RVN were going to score when they had the job.
Never had the same faith in Rooney or Ronaldo good and all as they were.

Troy Deeney and Vardy would be awful penalty takers if every keeper just stayed down the middle. Don't know why they fall for diving when these two blast it down the middle all the time.

It's especially bizarre with Deeney.

He smashes it down the middle every single time and yet so few keepers seem to realise that .

Watford get a penalty against us every year it feels like and it's always Deeney smashing it down the middle and De Gea still dives out the way every time. Infuriating.

Gabriel Jesus is absolutely atrocious at them. I think he`s missed more than he's scored. The ones against Atalanta and Argentina are especially bad.

There seems to be some bizarre phobia for keepers staying down the middle. They'd probably save more pens staying down the middle every time and just sticking a leg out to whatever side.

I suspect there’s way less research goes in to a match than we’d like to think. Especially from the players. In fact there’s probably none from the players.

Bergkamp

Martin Tyler: “3 of his last 5 penalties for Arsenal have been saved”

“Two international greats here, a decisive moment in an FA Cup semi-final replay...
Bergkamp and Schmeichel
...and Schmeichel has saved it!”

That meant he missed 4 penalties out of 6!

...cheers Dennis

Aye. You think with all the data analysis and scientific approach in place there that they'd be able to choose the best penalty taker, rather than repeatedly getting it wrong and squandering points (as well as a shot at the CL last year). Sterling's penalty technique is horrible.

I think they've finally realised that KDB is their best taker. Last night was just an anomaly with it being a dead rubber for them and Sterling chasing the golden boot.

Martin Palermo. He once managed to miss three penalties in one game - it’s quite an achievement

Be interesting what the City penalty line up would be if a SF or even final in CL goes to penalties.

Depends who's on the pitch but you suspect Bernardo and David Silva and Gundogan would be ahead in the pecking order, also Aguero if he makes it back.

There's actually academic research to back it up. I think it's called the goalkeeper dilema or something. Basically if all keepers just stood still they'll save about 30% of penalties.

Fair play to you for watching that. I missed MOTD so much when ITV got the rights to that show.

bit of an opposite topic but mendietta was one brilliant taker. Much underappreciated .

Wasn't there a Brazilian who missed three in the one match for his national team? Maybe not Brazilian but South American?

Edit: Just looked it up. Martin Palermo for Argentina
Holy feck, that is amazing. Just checked it, he didn't even hit the target on the first two and was fast to get the ball to have the third one. What a clown.
