What's the story with Lucas Piazon?

I saw his name mentioned on Reddit and immediately checked wiki to see what he was doing. He's still with Chelsea and still on loan every season for the last 8 seasons with 7 different clubs from 6 different countries...

- 12/13: Malaga
- 13/14: Vitesse
- 14/15: Frankfurt
- 15/16: Reading
- 16/18: Fulham
- 18/19: Chievo
- 19/20: Rio Ave

The guy is 26. Is he happy backpacking around Europe every year? Is this some extreme long-term project where Chelsea think his potential will finally be unlocked after a decade of loans? It's so weird to me.

Luke Garbutt did the same with us and we have just released him this summer.

What I would imagine is that these players are on decent money at their parent club and no other club is offering them a wage that is good enough to leave on a perm so they're quite happy to go out on loan because they're getting a good wage and still playing.

Those are some decent places, to be fair. Not a bad way to spend your early twenties, I suppose.

He was a supposed talent on good money. Chelsea probably extended his deal to get money from a sale that never really materialised.

Who was that guy at Spurs who was there for years and years but never played a first team game? Not sure if he went on loan or just played in the reserves.

We've got loan fees every season for him. It's not an accident that we have a million players out on loan!
Well that too, but I would have thought you were looking for a good price to sell him permanently too. I can’t remember off the top of my head but I think you’ve had a few sales of these perennially on loan players in the last few years for good money. ~4 years of loan fees plus a nice fee for a permanent sale if they succeed on loan. It’s smart business.

Simon Dawkins? They signed him twice and never played him. Think he retired

Clearly doesn’t give a feck about his career and would prefer getting paid, enjoying football and banging hotties around the world. Which is more than fair enough!

Is it Ben Alnwick? I have a Spurs mate who used to joke about him as being their version of a Marco van Ginkel or Lucas Piazon, of being pimped out to every club imaginable.

I watched pretty much every Malaga game in the 12/13 season and I thought he looked pretty promising for them. He didn't play that much because he only joined in January, but he linked up nicely with Joaquin, Isco, Portillo, etc.

Maybe he is just waiting on his contract to expire. If Chelsea doesn't want to play him or sell him, there's not much else he can do.

Honestly, I would prefer to have this type of career than changing mid table clubs in the same league every 2-3 years. He can probably write a traveling book by now.

He’s an investment vehicle.

Just like people rent out homes and flats, Chelsea rent him out (and a host of other players) and collect loan fees. The ethics and morals of this is questionable when you’re moving a human being around like this. Unsure what can really be done. I think I read recently FIFA or UEFA is planning to cap the number of players out on loan from a single club. I think one of the Italian clubs maybe Udinese had something insane like 89 players out on loan.

89 is nothing. Parma had 226.

Ahh feck, beaten to it

Thats insane, and unethical. UEFA should stablish a cap number of loans for a club at 69, just because

He is probably on astronomic wages and Chelsea cant get rid of him.

From what I hear, they rarely collect loan fees unless it's a 'big' team or player, such as Moses, Drinkwater, Zapacosta,
They counter this by making the small clubs pay the bulk of the players wages instead, there's no way Burnley or Villa were/are paying all of Drinkwater's wages for example.
They only need to sell two high profile players for £10m or so each in order to make essentially £20m profit.
The issue recently being they haven't really recouped much cash this way as they have had to actually use some of these they pinned their hopes on: Zouma, Mount,James etc, although you could make a case that Mount was earmarked when Lamps came in.
You can throw in Abraham in the mix too!

I think your memory is a very much clouded then. Piazon absolutely killed it in the first half of the season. 11 goals and 8 assists in the 16 League games he played up before the winter stop. And then he is said to have discovered night life abd plumeted in his performance with 0 goals and assists in the second half of the season.

But he was the revelation of the League in the first half of the season, so saying he was shit is not true.

He looked like an absolute gem that would make it at Chelsea in his first months.

He was?? Hmm, Im misstaking him for someone else then. Vitesse had quite a few Chelsea kids.. I know it's not Mount, he was great too..

Did he regress at some point perhaps?

Surely all these teams aren't covering his full wages AND paying large loan fees? I just don't see how this method benefits him or Chelsea.
