We had a slow start and it was nervy for a while, but once we got going, we dominated 2nd half and should have been 2 or 3 nil up at full time and scored 2 more in extra time. With just a few inches of luck here or there and score is comfortable and everyone perceives its a good night. But only win 1-0 and time serial whinging starts.

In reality, it was a decent enough performance, we were always going to win, and their GK and the woodwork stopped a riot.

Mata changed the game after he came on, his experience and class on the ball calmed everyone down. martial was amazing from 2nd half onwards and Im sure he will score one of these slalom goals before leaving Germany. Worryingly, Rashford was off all night.

We didn't create too much from open play yet again and all our chances were individual work like Martial's solo runs, Bruno's/Greenwood's shots etc. It's really sad we still can't create chances with patterns of play and have to rely on individuals/penalties to bail us out.

If we ever reach the final, we'll probably get humiliated against Conte's counter attacking football as we're clueless against deep defending teams.
We're clueless against deep defending teams now? I thought that was against pressing sides. Which is it?

The players barely moved in the first half. Don't think they're too tired after that.
This was more typical gassing out from an abnormally hot day, not a cumulation of games. Copenhagen tired as well. At some stages the game was at walking pace.

When was the last time we have hit the post 4 times in one game?

Bruno has been brilliant for us since his arrival however he needs to improve his game management personally as well as the team. Against better sides, losing the ball can cost goals. We seem to lack switching plans when it's not working.

Tonight we kept hitting long balls over the top even though it wasn't working, we need to work that out as a team on the pitch and not wait for half time.

I'm sure there will be many who are over critical of this game and they will likely find something to moan about Maguire over. Truth is, their keeper was man of the match plus we hit the post 3 times. This game could have easily been 6-0. Comfortable win even though it took 120 minutes to do it...

Really poor game. Mata and Martial motm. Greenwood unlucky not to score.
Are you just looking at the scoreline to come to that conclusion of a really poor match or did you actually watch the game? I watched and saw the opposing keeper make 13 saves and saw us hit the post 3 times. Total domination. Could have easily been 6 or 7 goals for us today. Sometimes they just don't go in, but to say we were poor in a match that we totally dominated and their keeper was man of the match after a world class performance is a bit of a stretch...

Of course it wasn't as bad as the result looks, but also not as good as you write. They had 2 very big chances in the 90 mins and we haven't had that much clear chances before extra time. A good hit by Bruno and Greenwood, a good offside goal by Greenwood, some more distance shots (best was from Martial) and a superb dribbling of Anthony where he didn't shoot. GK was expected to make all those saves in normal time. We only startet in extra time with Mata on the pitch to create chances and it was the first half of extra time where their goalkeeper turned into prime Neuer.

Deserved win but not a very good game from us.

Agreed. Deserved to win and played better, 2-0 would be probably a way more fair result, but we have to step up big time before next match. One more performance like this and we're out.

Good win and good performance. On to the next one. Let’s hope Rashford gets back to his best, he seemed just a tad off.

From about the 40th minutes on I thought we were all over them. We will never go an entire match without giving away changes. In the end though, they didn't have a single shot on goal while we had 14 as well as 3 hit goal posts. I didn't get nervous at any point during this game. It was complete domination against a keeper who was man of the match...

We should’ve put it to bed long before extra time. Felt like we were dithering a lot instead of shooting a lot of the time. For however good Martial was, I wish Greenwood could’ve gotten three of Martial’s chances instead. A little to pedestrian from a few players. Martial and Pogba worked incredibly hard to their credit. Rashford though, I hope it’s just rust from 6 months away from the pitch. Williams and AWB disappointing today. Bruno’s bad form continues.

Having said all that, I have to repeat, we deserved to win long before extra time. Weird game.

We'll get thrashed if we play like that in the semi. We looked knackered from the start, and really did not want extra time, but as the game went on our class started to show, especially Tony.

Their keeper was out of this world.

Well we won and didn't play too bad but God we just can't get an easy win these days. Every match is a lung buster even against the minnows.
Martial was brilliant, deserves more goals. Their star player Falk, where the Falk did he come from? Looked like ripping us apart every time he was on the ball.

Now? When exactly we were good against teams who sit deep? I mean creating clear goal scoring chances from open play with attacking patterns like City, Liverpool or any well coached team do rather than individual quality from Martial, Rashford, Greenwood etc? If we play like this against Conte's Inter we'll get battered like we did in 2016-17 at Stamford Bridge.

And to answer your question; probably both. We're clueless both against the teams who defend deep and who press high. And it's mostly down to (lack of) coaching.

Which Shit show? We were more than decent this evening. Was a cracking game...
I mean c'mon. We could easily have lost. The whole thing was thrown out of whack by the midfield problem. Fred isn't a defensive midfielder. And Rashford needs a beach ASAP.

We learned what we already knew - we don't have the depth to rotate the squad even slightly and Ole is tactically not very savvy. All this is not going away because we sign Jadon Sancho.

I think our players were told to keep it slow and to save energy. That did absolutely nothing for us. I‘d rather go all out for an hour than jog around for two.

I‘m questioning why we should bother in this cup. The risk seems to high for the reward. Just today there were a few situations where it seemed on the brink of an injury. And we all know that our second team is miles worse than our starters.

Yes, we‘re only a game away from the final but I‘d be really pissed if we end up paying with a key injury.

Also, Matic is twice the player Carrick has ever been.
My days.

I'm one of Matic's biggest fans on here, and have defended him for years, but this is so wrong. So, so wrong.

I don't like Pogba that deep. His game relies mostly on out-strengthening the oponnent to make some space for a pass. He has little impact on the game, yet can produce a couple of great passes when given time on the ball.

I'd give Fred some games I his position as he impressed me today.

Honestly, I thought we played well. Created chances. Copenhagen played blinding defense and their goalkeeper exhibited god-like skills today. They have speed. Other than that, there were generally ineffective and our defense held. Say what you want about individual moments, our defensive line did its job. I'm not going to slate anyone today. Everyone did multiple good things today, even if they did multiple not-great things.

Now honestly, how many of you were holding your breath when Lingard made that run?
Funny thing is, United only played at an average level for the first 25 minutes. Most people would call this "settling into the game", but for united fans at redcafe it makes the whole match 'dreadful/unbearable to watch".
You have the ones bashing Ole's tactics even though it worked and has been working since the restart consistently well. They will tell you "maybe if we played with panache it would bearable to watch", while watching our team pepper the opposition with chance after chance, totally dominating and controlling the game. There was a time when we couldn't score goals at all, now if we get anything less than three without absolutely dominating the game, we are rubbish. My biggest confusion is how the reaction to games when we were actually poor and now haven't changed. In fact, when we don't win these days you get almost triple the amount of pages on the post match thread. People coming out of the woodwork to bash Ole about being tactically deficient despite constantly proving otherwise both in big and small games. Despite being successful in the market over the last two windows, if we sign Sancho for 120m, we were rinsed for money; but if Dortmund hold out longer than we hoped for, Ed is incompetent at doing his job. Fans need to back this team and the people running it. They are all doing a really good job at the moment, and failing to realize this due to past transgressions or the fault of others would be a shame.

Macguire for me is one of the best defenders in the world. People just like following loose media theories. The amount of responsibility he has taken since his arrival is immense. Sometimes I think people don't actually watch the games. He's our main distributor from the back. He manages to keep us in control in our build up phase, a task which is clearly difficult to do, especially in a full of players that do no necessarily like having much possession of the ball. he's essentially a playmaker from the back. We would not have been able to play the type of football we have been playing since the restart without his control of the build up play. Defensively he is very solid and handles both the defensive inefficiencies of our left backs ( particularly willams) and the passiveness of Lindelof. He's very consistent and composed in his role. He is just as important as Bruno, Pogba or Martial to us.

They defended quite well and showed how they got this far. We created enough to win the game and they had 0 shots on target. Yep 0. Our goalie didn't have to make a single save just collect a few balls. Neither Inter or us are perfect.Their game is mostly give it to Lukaku. Let's see how it goes in the semis.

It felt like one of those games that we keep missing chances and they score in the last minute and win on penalties. Thank god it didn't turn out that way!

Ok ... generally hopeless then. Must have been a different team who have been on that incredible run since the turn of the year and won more points than anyone else.

I would agree with your sentiments if you were referring to us prior to Bruno really. After January though, and particularly after lockdown when we had a run of games facing teams toward the bottom with the deep sitting defences that caused us issues last year, all those 3-goal and 5-goal wins were fluke, after fluke, after fluke??

With no width or penetration from the left side with Williams and an increasingly tentative Rashford, we're obviously less destructive, but still creating a fair amount of chances. So no ... not hopeless

An OK result I guess, but are we confident that we can get a real result when we go for the return-leg in Denmark?

14 shots on target, 4 hitting the woodwork, disallowed goals and pen (though rightly so), 0 shots on target in reply and a goalkeeping MOTM performance from the opposition.

If it was a Klopp or Pep game everybody would be saying that it was the mark of a good team to grind out a result like this without playing well.

We did everything we needed to today to get the result and should have won at least 5-0. It was a decent performance tonight, not as bad as some are making out. Apart from the first half, we were pretty strong throughout.

It was just one of those nights. We've had games like this in virtually every cup win along the way but of course because of the current manager everything is magnified tenfold.

All we can do is deal with the opposition in front of us so we will see what happens on Sunday. We'll be ok.

Karl-Johan Johnsson needs to take the gloves from Robin Olsen in the Swedish NT. He played a blinder.

I was conflicted between feeling proud and angry at him saving literally everything. If it wasn't for the fact that Bruno takes his PK with such ferocious horse kick power I felt he could've saved that too.

MOTM for me. Forget any United player, they don't deserve it.

Great result and decent (not flawless) performance.

However even with the considerable lead up time before the next game, I do feel that taking this game to extra time added unnecessary strain on some of the players.

Hopefully the first 11 remain injury free till the next one.
