So how long until he signs a contract extension at Barca with a fat pay raise?

I don’t think they’ve played a blinder at all. They could get 100m plus this year, save 52m on wages and start their rebuild. Keeping an unhappy player an extra 10 months makes no sense whatsoever.
Selling Messi kills the board. They havent been pressured into it by being seen as the bad guys who havent a clue how their clauses work or are somehow assholes for not letting a 100m asset go for free.
Nor have they let Messi dictate who the president is or who is on the board. They have called his bluff.

Yeah this definitely a Barcelona win if he stays. I knew he wouldn’t have the balls to leave.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.

This board is dead anyway. They’re keeping Messi for political and not football reasons as a desperate attempt to keep any slither of a chance to get re-elected. The correct decision for the club is to take the money and rebuild.

Agreed. They're way too sentimental about this. Move on.

Will actually be distraught to see one of the greatest players of all time playing for a team that didn’t exist until 10 years ago.

Messi's father confirms FOR THE FIRST TIME that Leo Messi is studying the option of staying one more year at Barça

So after all this Messi might stay at Barca for another year which begs the question, why did he kick up a fuss?

He's damaged his legacy with Barca and its fans. He could have announced that this would be his last season and essentially had a victory lap with the applauding everything he does.

Now there's a dark cloud over the club and surely an unease in the dressing room due to this situation.

 So unexpected. He will say "For the good of the club " or similar bland shite, and fan boys will lap it up.

Great news, Messi at City would have been awful, awful, awful.

Now they've wasted 2/3 weeks trying to convince him and not other players.

Even if he joins them next season for free he's still another year older.

Messi on a normal day is a lazy player. Messi sulking would be something.

He only seems to have damaged his Barcelona legacy in the eyes of United fans which is slightly strange.

Leaving Barcelona was the right call imo at this stage in his career. But it probably isn't worth a legal mess with the club he loves.

If Messi wants to leave now looks like will need to Lawyer up and see what lawyers advise. Will depend on how the contract clause is worded, can actually be very simple if he can leave or not depending on what is in that contract.

apparently he is just a tier 3 type journalist. Would be stunned if he stays at this point
I on the contrary begin to think that he will stay. Without talking much, with doubts about his future, and after the elections in march, once Laporta, Font or Rosell win, announce a new mega contract

Now Messi senior denies that he said his son could still stay. It's a comedy and everything could have been better if Messi made a public statement when it all began.

Weird take. Messi wins regardless. Everyone is against the board now. Elections come and they are toast. Messi has also made his position abundantly clear and has it at final straw for them.

There's no board on the planet who want to go down in history linked to Messi's departure, this year or next. He's an institution, as such, he has the club by the balls. Win-win.

Conceivably Barcelona are bluffing, they might know they don't have a leg to stand on legally.

As soon as he lawyers up they'll negotiate his exit ?

Only reason they didn't yet could be optics, won't let him go unless he's got the lawyers in to force it.

That makes Barcelona board look better than just letting him go.

I think thats probable - though if he does want to leave I expect to see his legal team start a case regarding the clause in his contract (end of season / fixed date) and it almost does not matter what the court case will decide i just cant see it being viable that messi is in court against Barca monday to Friday then playing for them on Saturday - if he really wants to force a move that is probably his next move - but like you i think he will stay till there is a new president (could that process even be accelerated?)

Messi was never going to leave. It was a well-rehearsed tantrum to cultivate a media frenzy, for a nice bump in salary for the remaining year and possibly more.

I hope the drama continues for as long as possible which should disrupt city's plan for the summer. Ideally this case goes to court and ends up with barca winning and messi staying. That would be a mess :D .

Good thread on how Messi potentially staying does more long term damage to Barca than good

Also the claims he's kicked up a fuss simple for another pay bump is ridiculous when he's already on a million euros a week which Barca are already having financial trouble as a result.

I believe that he genuinely wants a change of scenery at this stage like Ronaldo 2 summers ago

It's just that their board are more concerned with self preservation and are willing to go scorched earth to prevent themselves from being responsible for losing their clubs god though unlike Madrid who agreed to let Ronaldo leave out of goodwill

I don't bet it, Rosell is even worse than Bartomeu?

Incredibly short sighted by Barcelona by forcing him to stay. Come jan 1st he can negotiate with foreign clubs for a free transfer in july. Bartomeu is only doing this so when he is turfed out in the spring elections, he can say he wasnt the Barcelona president who let their greatest player leave on a free. Better to take the £100mil now and rebuild the team. If messi truly wants to win champs league again, its not going to happen at Barcelona in next two seasons.

From what I understand the elections are in March because they need to balance the accounts, so that the board does not have to guarantee with their patrimony but I am totally sure.
Apparently they are also going to present a pro-Bartomeu "continuist" candidate, whom they will try to give visibility during this time, perhaps even securing some great signing

I don't think signing a CB depends on what happens with Messi. City originally wanted a Sane replacement + two centre-backs.

Putting the board on blast and making the entire globe aware of the situation isn't 'winning'?

You forget they have elections, too?

Messi is a god there, this episode can be spun any way as necessary and each scenario he comes out smelling of roses.

He's also yet to make his speech, which again will be spun in accordance with what's needed.

House never loses.

Agreed that they should let him go BUT it doesn’t make sense for them to let him leave for free which is what Messi and his dad are requesting. Rightly so, why should Barca let their biggest asset ever leave for free.

Barca would possibly let him go if a realistic fee of around £100m was offered but that is not on the table as city are unable to do any deal if there is a large fee involved.
