'Having had the chance to be absolutely bollocked by club officials I can only apologise...'

Messing up his first senior England camp is poor, and even if you feel the Covid rules are overly cautious they're there to keep everybody in the party safe and allow sport to take place. I don't think he's risked lives as such but he's shown a disregard for team rules in a way that could have adversely affected everyone in the camp, if for example they had to cut short their programme due to Covid compromising the camp etc. So it's a poor, quite selfish mistake that hopefully doesn't become a pattern of behaviour for Mason, but hopefully the matter's now closed and unless Ole has anything to add in terms of words or punishment he should get on with preparing for a great season with United. And at least he'll have the memories.

Stupid mistake, takes his medicine humbly, moves on. Such is the way of the world. He'll be fine.

Silly mistake, but that was all...he is 18 years old and had models from Iceland at his fingertips. Show me a single 18 year old lad that would resist and i'll show you liar.

He's been punished, kicked out the England squad for the game. Issued his apology. Move on.

Nor is it hard to discuss the point at hand and not the strawman you've decided upon. Read it again and come back to me.
please tell me what's the point then?
this is what you said:
He's 18 years old FFS. He make a mistake. Drop the Mary Sue bullshit will ya?
never ask him to be perfect, just don't be a fecking idiot when you're in strict health protocol design to keep you and everybody around you safe.

Breaking news on the BBC right now that he's apologised.

And because it's so important and I know you all won't be able to get on with your life without knowing precisely what he said for such breaking news is set to break the entire world when we all learn the truth, I'll post his exact quotes:

Greenwood said: "I can only apologise for the embarrassment I have caused."

He added: "In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down, when he had shown great trust in me."

"Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake.

"I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from."

Phew.

Civil society can remain in place.

Obviously a smoke screen for Sancho.
There were no Iceland girls. They both played Fortnite in a hotel room and bringing in remote controlled dolls, not actual girls. When the media focuses everything in the 'scandal'. Bang! Sancho announcement. Dortmund will never suspected how a club can go from protecting it's horny young player to breaking PL transfer record in the same week. Nice strategy from Ed Woodhard.

Yes he made a mistake. At no point have I said he should be excused because he's 18; that belongs firmly in your imagination.

It's amazing that you think being 18 that we should excuses rule breaking behavior.
Being young somewhat mitigates the situation. That doesn't mean what he did wasn't wrong. It doesn't mean he shouldn't be punished. Are you really incapable of understand that difference? Or will you continue to plug away at your strawman?

My take on this is that there is something wrong with the England national team set up. When I saw Greenwood answering questions at a press conference I realised the whole England national team business is a joke.Southgate must take some responsibility because fisrtly he overpromoted Greenwood. His call up should have been a year or two from now but out of desperation he made the call. Greenwood does not obviously value his call up because if he did, he would not have made this silly mistake. Ovepromoting young players gives them a sense of entitlement. He should have been made to wait longer to mature. Secondly he comes accross as too friendly with these boys. He needs to be the boss not a friend. He has encouraged a relaxed culture in the England camp , and the youngsters should have been assigned to a senior mentor not left to do their own thing

The mistakes by Greenwood and Foden are a result of arrogance from the players because they are too pampered and in the case of Greenwood, overpromoted for his age.

Is it just me or does Foden have an unlikable face. Would love to get a salmon and bish bash that across his chops. Seems like an unlikable scrote, especially with a missus and kid back home.

What ? Everyone getting hyped for the Nations League...it is basically glorified friendlies.

Greenwood and Foden in the England squad for a friendly is hardly over-promoting.

The fact these girls were recording everything I feels these 2 lads got played in an attempt to boost this models followers or something, she says she didnt know he was a Manchester United player, its all over his social media. Definitely planned by these young ladies.
The women who recorded the conversation were different to the ones smuggled into the hotel.

There's no such thing as 'overpromotion' where Utd were concerned. He was excelling at the level below and the next step was the 1st team where he saved our arses on a few occasions. While he deserves his castigation and the public humiliation that came with it, pious posts like this where a judgement is made in hindsight are absurd. Obviously you've never made an error.

Stories of very young, very rich footballers, away from home, caught in hotel rooms with young girls (what's the betting one turns out to be under-age?)... somethings never change, even with a Covid pandemic in play!

Very unsporting of Southgate to have VAR installed in their hotel bedrooms though!

Any pictures or link of the two girls that were smuggled in? I also do not understand are there no security stationed at the hotel 24/7? How easy or lax the security was it for that to happen?

What’s the age of consent in Iceland?

It's a hotel, not a prison.

They were smuggled in to avoid the England team people noticing.

The hotel staff probably opened the doors and welcomed them in.

Tbf some hotels do question if dodgy looking girls walk in. Staffs are usually trained at keeping track of guests and their visitors.

Still, having security guards posted 24/7 in front of the lift isn’t and shouldn’t be protocol any time the team is on the road.

I don't care how much of a top Red you are. Greenwood must not be defended like some innocent child here. He has shown arrogance and disrespected his national team manager by not waiting for one more week to meet up with girls outside this covid protected zone.

My point is Gareth placed too much trust in this immature 18 year old and he can take responsibility for that. On the other hand Greenwood has betrayed the trust of his manager and should be condemned so as an idiot. It is on this basis that I think it was too much too soon for this man child. Grealish, Kyle Walker got stick for breaking covid 19 rules. Greenwood would have been aware of that backlash, and he goes on to do the same thing. If that is not arrogance I don't know what it is.

No need to defend idiocy here, what happened clearly shows he did not value the chance to play for his country.

You wouldn't be defending him if he did such a silly thing on the eve of the Champions league final where United are involved would you?

Would have thought England will be employing their own security guards to guard the place especially the lobby and lifts as such, or least security provided by the hotel. You know, like protection and well being of the players living upstairs to avoid being disturbed by the public. Perhaps i'm wrong

Footballers just dont fully appreciate lockdown. They are the only people who interact really closely with loads of people on the pitch, training ground and probably at home. Nothing has really changed for them except no fans cheering then on. Whereas everyone else knows how to properly lockdown. I can see why these kids got easily tempted.

The girls are apparently denying that they knew the boys are footballers. I mean who would even believe them? Obviously they knew the two are famous footballers and looking to make themselves famous over it

Yeah, they definitely didn't know who they were, that's why they recorded themselves ...

What? Every other 18 year old with their national team this week managed to resist.... He's got models at his fingertips back home too.

Exactly. If he realises he has to behave when representing his country or club, then it will be a good lesson learnt. If he thinks he is now a bit of a lad and likes that reputation it could be trouble. Also as has been mentioned on the radio today, if they had gone to breakfast that is the England game done, also the risk of them all coming back to their teams. I know there is not isolation coming back from Iceland, but one Covid case from that squad and we know who will be blamed.
Yeah I dont think Southgate had any choice at all, and I also don't think you can blame it on the England set up or not protecting the players as it's pretty hard to protect players any more than by restricting them to isolating in a hotel.

The statement by Greenwood says all the right things IMO. It's obviously a PR brief but it's good that he's said it and that someone's at least had that conversation with him. You're allowed a feck up at his age. It's more about what the reaction is.

Your opening sentence reveals exactly how fatuous and sanctimonious your post actually is. You've switched from 'overpromotion' to hypothetical situations re UCL . I don't believe I ever defended him but your haste to bring up all sorts of conjecture is a tad holier than thou.

Thanks for calling me a 'top red', it's far better than the perfect human being that is clearly yourself.
