We were/are in need of a defensive midfielder but instead we went after van der beek as back up for pogba and Fernandes. Beek is a good player but seemed like money not wisely spent when there are some real pressing issues that need addressing asap in the first 11.

Eva spot on in post match commentary. We're exhausted as fans, even after the first game. C-suite and owners have to go.

It’s incredible how you have zero width these days. The wingers like to play on the inside, your fullbacks don’t overlap or aren’t able to create on their own.

Given the attacking talent you have, you’re clearly capable of beating anyone, but in the games where it’s close, or the opposition doesn’t allow you any space in the middle, you look incredibly toothless. Has become particularly apparent when you’re behind and chasing the game. The opposition has no problems with crowding the middle and giving you room out wide, as you’ve no-one who’s a threat there.
problem is we don't really have wingers.

James isn#t any good on the right, and not good enough to create space for himself at this level wherever he is playing.

Greenwood isn't really a winger, and neither is rashford. Our best winger is martial, and has been since he arrived, but he plays center forward.

Depressing Viewing. The team performance got what it deserved. Palace got huge luck on that 2nd goal, not a penalty for me and who knows if it wasn't given?

Lindelof truly awful on that 3rd goal. Worst part of that defeat is Palace are average at best and tonight they didn't have to play that well to win in Old Trafford. Going to be a long hard season ahead, wake me up when 2020 ends.

I see. Now it's fatigue.

So I guess this season is a write off because we're fatigued. But then it's the Euros next summer? I guess next season is also a write off because everyone will be tired again. Maybe the season after that we'll kick on! So, 2022/23 it is. Can't wait.

You can only put that down to our non-existent preseason and hope we'll quickly get our shit together

I'm just going on The Caf
Well personally I wouldn't pay any of them this week after that performance bar De Beek who looked devastated at the end and showed more in his subs appearance than Pogba did for his spell.

Shit from minute one. Fall over palace knew Atkinson would give them everything and they played to it. Doesn't excuse performances like that though. Maguire and lindelof playing like they've been on the spice. Only Shaw and VDB came out with any credit really.

This!

Shocking performance, but heads up and we go again.
Correct. It's not like season is done. But the symtoms exposed in the first match are so worrying that one can be excused for being cynical.

Delighted that I didn't chase a river. This had a loss all over it. I'm telling you people now, don't spend one fecking penny on this club. They couldn't give a feck about what happens on the pitch as long as Woodward gets his clicks and likes and the trailer park barons get their dividend. Going in to our eight season of absolute shite. Woodward out.

We need a striker. Lindelof can be replaced with smalling but we are equally spineless going forward and especially in the penalty box. We need a proper striker who can even put Martial on the bench. I wouldn't mind Alexander Sørloth.

They are not match fit, it’s so obvious.

How the hell is know one fit. Wtf is going on.

The only one with energy wasn’t a Man Utd player until two weeks ago.
The one that has been training while ours were on holiday?

We looked like a team that's barely had two weeks training and no pre season matches together. It's not much of a surprise really.

Zero energy today, they have been giving to much time off maybe...I feel it was harsh for them to play against a team with a game under their belt, should be been 2 teams playing their first games rather than an unfair matchup.

Referee was a clown but it's the modern way now so just have to take it.

Better team won, lets forget it asap.

Agreed. Palace sitting back meant we needed to be better at drawing players away towards the wings, leaving more space in the box for the likes of Martial and Bruno to attack. Rashford and James (later Greenwood) were too one-dimensional and it really played into Palace's hands.
The only way we can score out wide is by getting behind the defensive line and cutting the ball back, we don't have a tall striker who can win the ball in the air.
Unfortunately against a low block this in incredibly hard to do,
The key is to move the ball quicker, more one touch pass and move wall passes are needed.
VDB and Bruno combined well together but we didn't do enough of this, nor switching the play.

United 1 Lindelof 3 and Lindelof was unlucky not to get more.

Bad performance by the team but Lindelof was disgraceful, hopeless, hopeless weak and clueless not just for the goals but all the other errors he made. Killed the end of our season last seaon and kills the start of this one . If he isn't replaced and continues to play we are in trouble. Forget forwards or left backs, either buy a Centre half as top priority or play Bailly or Smalling or even Rojo, none of them are as bad as this clown .

McT played well covering the other errors of Lindelof
Rashford anonymous , not enough quick forward play. James is out of his depth. VdB looks lively and got his debut goal.

Our defence looks like a sieve but if Lindelof is not there confident we will still do well this season .
I think this is a bit harsh. The first goal he should have done better blocking the cross. The second was a fluke. The third was unlucky as he got a foot on the ball and it bounced kindly for Zaha.

I think our best midfield might be Pogba and Bruno deep and VDB up giving the first two license to make runs.

Lindelof and Maguire get a lot of hate but I don't think I've ever seen them have a game that bad.
Didn't Lindelof leave the Swedish camp because he was tired? Maybe they should check him over to make sure he isn't ill or he is a bit flakey.

This is what happens when a squad overperforms, and then there is no significant reinvestment. Shaw and Rashford were so poor today. Created nothing at all, and don't even look like being able to beat a man.

James and Fosu Mensah on the other side, the less said the better.

De Gea saved a pen finally but the ref made them retake it. That was a total disgrace from start to finish.

What a terrible start to the season. At this rate, even Spurs with Jose will start looking better than us.

Palace deserved to win. Better team, better tactics & played with intensity.

Really do not understand why Maguire and Lindelof are considered better than Smalling. Smalling is no worse on the ball than either of them but is a far better defender.

STOP BLAMING OLE!
This has nothing to do with Ole. Those 3 points are on them muppets running our club.
I defend ole when its right but he has enough at his disposal to beat Palace im afraid. You can't hide behind signings for individual games. The lack of signings will show over a long season granted.

We are capable of much better. Not going to be kneejerk.

The team needs sorting out though. Wingers incapable of beating a defender or putting in a good ball.

Midfield looks disjointed and unfit.

Defence...well lindelof needs to be dropped. So does TFM.

Where are Tuanzebe/Mengi/Bailly? AWB needs to come back into the side immediately.

The reality is that we need VDB as well as players in other positions.

The longer we go without getting new players in these positions, the more it just stacks up. This is years of continued poor signings and disappointing transfer windows coming home to bite us in the arse.

With no fans in stadium there isn't that much pressure. Glazers will keep him until he misses CL qualification

I mean it's only one game. Bit early to say we will miss top four.
6 or 7 more games like today and we are fecking done. It's guaranteed we will have more days like this.

We lost 3-1 at home to crystal palace in the first game of the season and while it's disappointing it doesn't even hurt that bad . United really have made me numb so quickly

Most of the team were clearly not match fit and their skills were rusty and out of tune. We then came up against a capable team who were fit and played very well. We were deservedly beaten.

doesn’t mean it’s all gloom: fitness will come within a week or two, and let’s hope this loss forces our board into investing in a better LCB and RW than we currently have.

I know right , I didn't expect it but I'm not that surprised. We've seen us play like that before many times.

Deja vu of literally every f time we get CL football and not invest with that money.

Players are barely walking, nearly no other team played as many minutes as we did last season and we have no depth so that was expected.

The only positive is that message was sent to Woodward and co, if they ignore this big red flag once again, it means we'll be the new Arsenal until they move on.

Oh and VDB looks fired up and I expect him to start instead of Pogba, who needs to be rested and will be surely used as an argument of COVID inpact on players in some chatters, next game.

Obviously enjoyed that one, I’ve been privately backing Wilf to have a fantastic season in that role, really suits him and he was a right handful today. Also lovely to have players like Eze and Bats that can come on.

Where to start with Utd...I have never been so comfortable watching us play you, I think that about sums it up. About three minutes of squeaky bum time after VDB’s goal and that was literally it...at Old Trafford! Major work to do for you guys.

WHY ? as he is the one picking the team, he is the one who doesn't seem to have a fecking clue as in a plan B. He saw last season playing james on the right doesnt work, still does it, so yes while the owners can be blame for some of our problems, ole is also at fault as he doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes and sits there looking as clueless as moyes did near his end here..
