Should we consider selling Harry Maguire?

Very limited defender, most knew it was bonkers to drop £80m on him, but as with many of our players, always seem to be playing a level or two below they’re ability, whether that be good, average or crap.

Can only put that on the manager really. We blamed Moyes, LVG & Mourinho for having a team with seemingly no coherent plan, don’t see what the difference here is.

We shouldn't consider it, we should do it. We have the perfect excuse with his Greece escapades but the truth is he's not good enough to lead our club. It's that simple.

Maguire is our best defender, but he and our defence get very little help from our CM. Matic does not have the legs and Pogba is a liability unless he is paired with two strong runners in CM. Even van Dijk would look bad playing behind our CM.

Bailly's pass leading to Spurs's third goal is why I do not trust him and Bailly and Lindelöf are both inferior to Maguire.

We should keep Maguire, buy a pacy CB and play Fred or McTominay in CM, ideally buy Partey if we miss out on Sancho.

Realistically we are stuck with what we have.
I agree with this. It's sad when we have to sign other players to make what we have better but that's the reality. There's just too much pressure on Maquire from all sides. As you say. Shore up with a more mobile CB beside him and a good DM and I would think Maquire would become a more solid CB.

At the minute I would drop him though for his own good and try and get his head sorted out because he definitely isn't at the races at the minute. It might affect results but I'd think it'd be worth getting him back more concentrated than the shit show we're seeing at the minute.

130m for Maguire and AWB. We'd honestly be lucky if we got more than 50m for the pair.

No but smalling and Evans are a far better pair than what we have

Under a tree.
5 pages on and no one has proved a solution

So what, we sell him for say 30m, and then what? Spend that 30m on who or another 80m on who...?

Our defence in general arent showing anything. He's the one with the biggest price tag, and has the spotlight mainly on him due to that.

Really torrid start to the season for him though. Problem is we have no backup CBs to replace him and get him fighting for his spot either.

Maguire was bad but Bailly is part of that reason .
Bailly made Maguire head the ball of his head, not even to his head? Is Bailly also responsible for twirling Shaw as hes trying to clear the danger?

We will not sell him, we will be stubborn and try to buy someone to complement him but not before it costs us top 4 in the upcoming season.

The year before we signed Maguire, Luke Shaw won our player of the year award which realistically should have been given to Lindelof. That’s where we were at.

Maguire and AWB are levels above both of them and have shown them up for how poor they both are. This season neither have started the season well but it cannot be easy two of them trying to do the jobs of four defenders. Hopefully we bring in a centre half to compliment Maguire & Telles is the upgrade we are all hoping for over Shaw.

No but playing beside a complete and utter liability can't be easy . Maguire has been a disgrace in the first 3 games this season as has United as a unit but Bailly is on another level

Funny part is that Jose wanted him too. Woodward stood firm and didn't budge.

Then he budged when Ole came in.

He should have stuck to his guns.

There’s been incessant talk of getting a partner for the £80M CB we bought from Leicester to get the best out of him, but truthfully, I don’t think Maguire is good enough to be starting for us, and I feel we’ll need to find a “partner” for the so called “partner” we are supposed to be looking for Maguire.

I fail to see anything he excels at. Positioning, aggressiveness, leadership/organising, speed, tackling, sweeping/covering. Nothing. Maybe he’s decent aerially, but even then he’s extremely wasteful when in the opposition box. His conduct off the pitch is also questionable.

Should we try and get some of the money back?

Discuss.
We lose over 60 million if they do

Revisit the thread where Bailly and Maguire played together last. Better yet, go rewatch the game yourself. All these shambolic defensive performances that have had people clamouring for Upamecano, Maguire has had a bunch of mares. Guy makes errors leading to chances or goals almost every game, multiple times.

That whole “our best CB” narrative is not solid, at all.
At least you left it for the last line so I finished the post. He’s easily our best CB.

No chance of recouping any of the money, but... ...if we just ignore him, he might just go away.

I disagree that Bailly is on another level. Agree that he's not good enough but Maguire doesn't get called out for just how poor he is. What was he thinking when he was dragging Shaw down? He's a joke of a defender.

Jose wouldn't have used him in the same way.

He has proven to be a very good CB. Yes, not a 80m one, but good none the less.

We should certainly drop him he's appalling. Big mistake from LVG selling Evans and arguably are best defender is about to join Roma. And he shouldn't be captain - the captain would be facing the cameras after that, not Shaw.

Perhaps, but Jose's teams haven't been good defensively in a long time.

I don't know if Maguire is very good, but he's certainly better than what he's shown so far. Then again, so is almost every player. The entire squad has regressed massively.

The pressure on him by the fanbase and the likes of Gary Neville was insane though. Our fanbase has constantly egged the clubs board into making some incredibly poor decisions.

The guys easily our best defender. Had Woodward backed Mourinho and signed him the summer before for £50m no one would have the “worlds most expensive defender” narrative to throw at him & we’d appreciate just how much better than Lindelof/Bailly/Smalling/Jones he is.

Shades of Moyes when he brought on RVP to escape criticism.

Neville is embarrassing too. Don't think he even dared criticizing Ole today.

He wasn't available for 50m the previous summer. It was a similar fee.

No, onto the next kneejerk post, it’s more embarrassing than the teams performance.

We were solid defensively in 17/18 under him and the year he won it with Chelsea. Problem is more to do with rest of his tactics and adjusting to the new modern day proactive approach.

I don't think it's particularly kneejerk. I think more people are just realizing just how limited a player he is and are starting to question his importance to the team. He's certainly not infallible/undroppable.

Well no, it's a legitimate conversation considering his last 3 performances. Has been God awful so far this season. Our defence has been pretty terrible since lockdown really. Or at least since the Brighton game. I don't know where it's all gone wrong. They all seem to be constantly out of position.

Mainly down to De Gea having the best season a Prem GK has maybe ever had with making saves.

Chelsea's title season was in 2014-2015. That's a long time ago.

Well,no. If only because if Maguire was sold, we would be left with Jones and Rojo as first choice partner and first backup to Lindelof...

But, Ole should tell our scouts to start looking at the market immediattely. Was Maguire actually scouted before the signing or was he a panic buy like Alexis ?

When we lose I also overreact like this. Harry's alright, not VVD but he's an alright defender.

I'd be curious to see these players with a proper coaching staff. Other than Martial/Greenwood I see 0 improvements in our player since Ole came in. (maybe Fred as well)
