They weren’t expecting a title race either. They’re building a team ready to takeover when city/Liverpool start to decline. If they finish top 4 then there’s absolutely no issue.
There's obviously going to be an issue if there's no sign of improvement..City and Liverpool aren't collecting points like before.

I hope they don't sack him. A competent manager would be able to achieve a lot with this kind of quality in the squad

Seeing as Duffer has gone to India can any of our other resident Chelsea bunch offer a serious opinion on the above?

@Dancfc @Mb194dc @ZolaWasMagic @TheMagicFoolBus
Best way i can describe it is it feels like Pulis has took charge from the last CL group game onwards, everything was progressing nicely before that but since then it's been worse than Scolari's final 2 months.

I predicted 5th last season. Almost everyone expected us to also have a disastrous season without Hazard and to struggle in attack.

It was an achievement and we got to the cup final.

Chelsea managers don't get transitional seasons, especially not when Mr A has shelled out £200m. Chelsea have to make top 4 this year or no chance Lampard keeps job.
When you predicted 5th, did you predict Spurs above you?

Making top-four should be the bare minimum requirement for Chelsea these days so Frank should keep his job until it is no longer attainable. Sacking him before that would be premature in my opinion.

Reminds me of the Ole situation at a similar time last year; we were languishing midtable or thereabouts with little hope of making top-four, then we signed Bruno and everything changed. Greenwood emerged, Rashford and Martial started banging them in for fun, the defence tightened up like a virgin's *****, all of which resulted in a rapid ascent up the table.

There is too much ability with that Chelsea squad just to give up on Frank finding a solution. Anything is possible.

BIG article on the Athletic about Lampard’s job being under serious threat. Looks like they’ve already started to consider alternatives. Writings on the wall it seems

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.

Absolutely. However, this was in response to “how can you call it progress if they go from 4th to 4th.” Which is bollocks. Context is everything. If we finish 3rd comfortably this year we’ve clearly made progress...going from 3rd to 3rd. It’ll be the same if Chelsea do the same with a better squad now settled ahead of next season. Which personally I think will happen.

Roman was very much expecting Chelsea to be in the title race with the amount of money spent last summer on top of already strong squad. Its still early days yet (only 17 games played) but I can't see Lampard manager of Chelsea next year if they don't mount a title challenge this season.

If he thought Chelsea should compete with 2 of the best teams on the planet who are at their peaks just because he spent 220m on a bunch young players years away from their peak and allowing them zero time to settle then he knows feck all about football.

Facing the sack as per Athletic. Chelsea are ruthless when it comes to managers and think it's only a matter of time.

We're not even halfway through the season yet and are only 7 points off of the top spot.

Of course we could/should be doing better but sacking now would be silly, which is why he won't get sacked now.
You say only 7 points but thats having your cake and eating it. We cant compliment the madness of the league then say only 7 points. Those 7 points (after playing a game more btw) are harder to come by this time around.

There's plenty of decent candidates out there to make a change mid season. Probably would've been in for Poch but you've still got Tuchel unless terms of his PSG exit mean he can't manage another CL club this season. If so would make Allegri big favourite for this job when it comes up.

He’s so protected by the press it’s unreal.

If United had signed a £90m midfielder who looks like he’s worth about 9 quid and a new striker who hadn’t scored in 12 games whilst sitting mid table could you imagine the uproar?

I wouldn’t mind but former Chelsea managers were hounded out of the club for doing much better.

Just had a look when they sacked Di Matteo and they had 24 points after 12 league games so Lampard isn't really doing that great if that's the barometer.

AVB in season he got sacked had 33 points after 17 games.

Chelsea struggling to even make 60 point season currently so you're not getting close top 4 with that ratio.

He's hardly a man for patience though.

This list looks right except for Grant being on the top.
Remember that he was a single John Terry kick away from being a European cup winner!
The title that year we held them off by just 2 points.

He could quite easily have had a double if luck hadn't deserted them!

What are the odds on Tuchel ending up there?
Would probably fit in quite well. Julien Laurens said Tuchel didn't want to be anything other than a head coach, effectively, at PSG. Which is what Chelsea seem geared towards, what with Granovskaia being their de facto DoF (though I assume her role is even further reaching). Main question would be how quickly he can get a team well versed in his philosophy..

Liverpool was one of the best 2 last season, less so now and City finished nearly 20 points off 1st last season and made their usual early exit from the CL. Roman expects a challenge when he backs his manager like that, he's ruthless and its clear Frank is feeling that pressure to succeed right now.

Premier league is a much tougher league than the SPL.
From someone who is from a country who doesn't belong to a top league I say to you that is much easier to evaluate the quality of a coach working in peripheral leagues with low budgets than working in a rich league with high budgets.

If you believe Lampard would be doing the same job as Gerrard is doing at Rangers then fine. But maybe the Scottish posters are more qualified to talk about him than me. From what I have seen from Gerrard at Europa League level he already is a very good coach. Scottish League, Portuguese League, Chinese League you name it. And if you think Steve Bruce is a better manager than him because he is at Newcastle and Gerrard at Rangers so be it.
