So a keeper making a deliberate effort to save a shot brings about a new phase of play then? You can be 5 yards offside, but a player sliding to intercept the pass means you're free to rob them of the ball while they're still on their arse. Tossers.

The moment Mings makes a deliberate play - attempting to control the ball with his chest. Since Rodri does not interfere with that, offside is reset and at that point Rodri is free to challenge for the ball after Mings fecks up his chest control
No mate - mings doesn’t even have a chance to react after taking the ball down. Rodri is there before the ball even lands!

answer me this, if the balls in the air and mings try’s to head it, and Rodri challenges him from behind, is that offside or fine?

It's amazing that can be called onside, while borderline hairline decisions based on which freeze-frame is taken see good goals chalked off. But them the rules, they got the decision right according to the laws of the game. I think it says how bad the law is when the Premier League are diving in and putting out a statement backing the officials. :D

Why are people so precious about comments like that? I mean like most don't say worse when around their mates watching the game (feels like ages ago now).
It's shit in all honesty. They can say it to their mates all they like in the pub. Not far from I hope he breaks a leg.

Surely it doesn't go further than the City player clearly gaining an advantage from being onside?

Reminds me of that Nani goal vs Tottenham. Everyone knew he was offside then, so where's the outrage now? Commentators still defending the decision and so is Walton. Terrible refereeing.
You've got that one wrong. It wasn't an offside in the Nani incident.

Is it just this year the rules are all over the place? Ok I accept the decision based on the current rule but I have no idea what the bloody rules are anymore!

At what point would Rhodri no longer be considered 'offside'? Genuinely curious
Good question. For me, it’s when Mings clearly has the ball under control. He’s chested the ball and it’s not even hit the ground by the time Rodri nicks it while running towards him from an offside position.

Regardless of that, Rodri’s offside position only needs to distract or interfere with the opponent to be considered offside, and Mings could have been forced to make a touch he normally wouldn’t have taken by the player from behind putting pressure on him. Like if there’s no player behind him, he’s in a position where he’s happy with the result making him not need to chest the ball at all.

I’m happy it was Mings of all people though. The sooner that thug leaves the league and stops fetching a wage for assaulting people the better.

It's the right decision. Blame the rule, but the moment Mings decide to control the ball, Rodri's initial offside position doesn't matter anymore. That's how the rule works

Mings fecked up
Barely even had a chance to control it, lost the ball before he had it under control, and his control was effected by the player behind him which surely makes him passively offside?

I'm still baffled as to how that's not given as offside? He controlled the ball on his chest and was being tackled before the ball hits the ground
At no point was the ball under control... If that ball gets played to his feet and he gets tackled after his first touch, I think it's given offside.

It's offside because he challenging Mings for the ball from an offside position

What you need to understand is that it doesn't matter whether Mings had control of the ball or not - only that he tried to. The only phase of play that matters here to determine offside is Mings first touch -

- is it a deliberate attempt to play the ball(i.e. not a last ditch clearance/deflection)? Yes.
- does Rodri interfere with Mings ability to make that play? No.

Onside. End of the story. That's how the rule works. Blame the rule, not the refs

You should be angry at MIngs not the ref and VAR
What is he supposed to do? Rodri is so far offside you’d never expect him to even attempt to come and tackle him. You’re coming from an offside position to play the ball, that’s instantly offside?!

it’s not like Rodri is inside after he chests it down? He’s 5 metres ofside as the ball drops!

I think 15-3 would have been a fair result tonight. Two goals were harsh but technically correct. We really need a striker to put teams like this away... with a fit Aguero (something we haven't had for 13 months) tonight the game is over by half time.

Villa were magnificent, a long time since an away team (or home) had the balls to play like that vs City. There midfield of Barkely, McGinn, Luis and Grealish are all serious ballers. Traore is very good too but not as composed.

What an absolutely shambolic decision.

City gifted 3 points.

Stupid from Mings, but also it's such a shocking rule. A 'deliberate' play on the ball, I mean what is even the meaning of that. Rodri is 100% effecting the game, and also influencing Mings. It's as clear as day that that should be called offside, but once again the geniuses at the FA have to twist the rules into something so convoluted.

Not having a moan because its City and all that, but as a football fan you are just watching that and knowing that's going to happen to your team at some stage and you'll be pulling your hair out.

You can't be offside from the opposition playing the ball. Once Mings brought it down, Rodri can tackle him from anywhere.

So MIngs doesn't know he's there but he's somehow affected MIngs decision. Okay then.
Ofcourse it does. He didn’t know he was there so he decided to chest It.

If he knew he was there, he wouldn’t, so not seeing him affected his decision

Thought it was clearly on, tbh. Don't see what the fuss is all about. Too many goals have been disallowed for nonsense offsides, why add more? Mings touches the ball deliberately, whether he "controlled" it doesn't really matter. It didn't accidentally hit off him on the way to Rodri, he clearly and willingly changed the trajectory of the ball. If he had left it, it would be offside. If he had headed it forward, wouldn't be an issue at all. Rodri was running back to get onside which is what he's supposed to do, he can't stay offside. You see forwards do this exact thing all the time.

No no no no

you CANNOT come back from offside and tackle somebody period.

if mings passes the ball and then Rodri intercepts it after he’s got back inside, then fine.

the ball is on the floor before Rodri even gets onside, so he’s instantly offside.

that situation has never ever been allowed, it’s always called offside.

So should teams encourage strikers to start hiding in offside positions?

Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"

This is my issue with the sense (or lack of it). I get rules sometimes change but whoever thought of this one!

So you can stand yards behind the defenders and as soon as they (intentionally) touch it, tackle them?

So gaining an advantage??

He clearly says affected the game, not Mings decision.
When Rodri makes an attempt for the ball he's deemed onside.

Of course you can if the phase of play has changed.

A keeper making a save isn’t a deliberate attempt to play the ball, it’s a block/deflection.

So if I’m right, Mings should have not touch the ball and if Rodri then goes for the ball it’s offside. As soon as Mings tries to control the ball and touches it, it’s then irrelevant that Rodri has snook up on him from 15 yards behind to nick the ball off his feet? That is absolutely criminal. And they draw these lines for 3 minutes over an armpit being offside...... the game is gone!
