Not in the Race?

Managers said UTD, not in the title race? Other pundits disagree, some think City will get a blip.
Is this a comment from a manager, letting the board, owners know there is still players needed to compete for a title?
Or is it just trying to deflect, the cockups and defend his players. I just think a win against Everton when, the next day 2 teams chasing the title play each other would have put UTD in a far better position.

Well Man City has already won the league last night. United was the only team that could catch them. Shows how fecked we were.

The talk from the pundits is nonsense, before the season some of them did not even have Utd in their predicted top 4's. They talk about Covid as something that will give the chance for the unexpected, but as much as it affects other clubs it has affected us if not more. I actually think if you take perspective, United are showing some growth, and are performing better than the pundits expected, especially considering their ideas about OGS. Rather than complimenting it and praising Utd's progress, it seems there is a concerted effort to change the rhetoric from a team that has improved vastly to one that is failing in a title challenge to detract from any thought of Utd being successful.

From OGS perspective, you can't read into what he says in the media. He is always going to tow the line of 'we are not thinking about it', 'one game at a time' etc. I actually think he believes it more than we think, if you have heard the players interviews there seems to be more mention of the title when asked, and slightly more positive responses - this probably is more of a sign of what is being spoken about behind the scenes.

If we actually look at the current state of play - City have 2 games in hand which are Liverpool (a) and Everton (a) - I have zero faith in Everton, it seems we are always their cup final and we will know more about the other today. Lets say City get 4 points. They are in effect therefore 6 points clear with Spurs and Arsenal to come whilst we have WBA and Newcastle. If City get 4 points again, and we actually get over the line in both of ours the gap is 4 points with City on the horizon.

Taking the above into account - realistically City are by far the favourites and rightly so but the gap could be a lot closer come the end of this month - are we good enough to pounce?

- My mind says no, a team that can pounce does not do what it did yesterday, it also goes out and beats Arsenal and does not concede the number of goals we do
- Heart - you never know, 3 games ago our attack was impotent and we could not break down a deep defence. Then our last 2 games look at how well we have attacked, and the patterns of play we are developing. For the heart to have any chance, our defence really needs to grow - but one thing I have noted with this Utd squad and coaching team - they have the right attitude and slowly but surely are learning. It could just click - its the hope that kills :)

Ultimately, it would be great if we could go on a decent run now and essentially be in a race if City drop some points but otherwise just secure our top 4 place and come late March start to shift focus to the cups.

It's a one horse race! Last night will be even more frustrating if City drop points against Liverpool. Can't seem City losing enough points between now and the end of the season

We're currently on pace for 74 points. Do you know when was the last time that 74 points was enough for the Premier League title?

Never. We're not in a title race.

We should just hope that City wipe the floor with Pool today, because the only race we are in realistically is for the top four.

Fergie said attackers win you games, defences win you titles

After last night's defence you can see why Ole said what he did

With City clicking into gear and we regressing to our actual level there is no title race ,if we can be comfortable top 4 and breach 76 points mark along with a cup I would be quite content with the season to honest.

I don’t think he meant to outright say no when he was asked last night. He then corrected himself and went back to the one game at a time line. It’s all irrelevant anyway as he’ll be talking to the players privately about that kind of stuff.

I would be surprised if City’s lead over us is still single digits by the time we’ve played at the Etihad.

I think you couldn't rule us out of the title race if that was anyone other than City out in the lead. It's just that they have the capacity to keep getting results very consistently now they have shaken off the early season form and it's easy to imagine that they only drop a single digit amount of points from here til the end of the season.

City have dropped a level by standards they and Liverpool have set over the past 3 years but still that level of consistency is a step too far for us this season. Look at the table and ignore City, looks like we are in the midst of a crazy title race.

Unless City start to drop points we are just in a race for 2nd best. Better than what we have seen last season and the one before. But we still have some level of improvement to do to match that machine like consistency. Treat this season as a free hit and it doesn't hurt as much.

Yep. Said it a few days ago if we don't beat Everton it would be foolish to hope for a Liverpool win, they're in the top 4 battle with us.

City have the league won, we still have a good chance of finishing 2nd, but we're not competing for the title with them really, not with our defence and genuinely woeful home form.

The only way we’re in a title race is if City go to complete shit like Liverpool did. It won’t be because we have the ability to cope with the pressure of a proper title race.

What are the exact quotes?

If he said that then he must see the pressure is not doing any good to us. Otherswise it's a weird comment to make. As we still stand a chance, but yeah it's all in City hands and they look top notch for a while now.

Deflect the pressure of course. What happened when we were top of the CL group? And some idiots claimed we will surely qualify. What happened when we were top of the chart? No-one should be dreaming about winning anything until we are 4-5 games from it. That is, if we are top of the leaderboard in late April, then start dreaming. Just not NOW.

No title race if City win today.

So he needs a Cup and top four for me.

Ole knows he can't rely on that defence and you don't win titles with that.

Yeah I was going to post the same thing actually: we're much better off with a City win today. Second place is achievable as Liverpool seem to be all over the place these days.

For who, for Spurs maybe.

We were first with a few decent games coming up but we bottled it, as usual.
Top2, a cup and UEL would be an OK season for me.
That's stretching it. That was be a very good season. At the start of the season no one saw us getting top 2.

I dont think, and haven’t thought at any point, that we would win the league this season.

However people categorically stating City have already won it is a complete nonsense, there’s what 17 games left?

They are clear favourites but nothings guaranteed ffs.

We never were, there was a spell of around a week or two where we some how managed to scrape our way into a possibility of a title challenge and then we played Liverpool and Sheff utd and shown what we are capable of.

It's exactly the same as last season except there is a an extra one or two teams as bad as us at the top to make us look better. They will drop points which means we will then drop points. Only difference is, it will only be City this year picking up points every week.

No but could be if.. The manager sorted out the defence and stopped playing Lindelof, made subs a lot quicker and more decisive tactical decisions. He won't change these few things hence why we currently are not in the title race. Top 3 is our aim.

Why Lindelof. Why not Maguire?

True. Maybe they're on course for the title is fairer. Anything can happen, but it would take some costly injuries and a bit of a crumble at this point. It's not just about them either, the chasing pack just aren't consistent enough.

But I still wouldn't fancy us to be close enough to capitalise. Too often we stumble when it matters, it's exhausting.

Hope, We Lose
We are mathmatically of course, but when you have such poor performing CBs and keeper that despite being the top scorers in the league you're still 2 points behind with your rivals having 2 games in hand and potentially going 8 points ahead then you don't sound like a team thats going to run them close.

Why Lindelof. Why not Maguire?
Lindelof for me is in the DDG category - Scared of the ball. You can see how uneasy he is when getting the ball passed to him. Maguire is not that good I agree but Lindelof is worse.

We’re in a Top 4 race that’s about it

30 goals conceded one goal better than Fulham and 5 off Sheffield Utd answers the other race we were supposed to be in.

Yeah there is a serious lack of characters on the pitch for us.

Other than Bruno nobody opens their mouths.

I honestly think we are close to finishing a squad that can properly challenge but those last handful of signings need to add leadership ideally.

I mean I know I’m a defender of Ole but thinking rationally how can the manager be blamed for yesterday... we created many chances to score more than we did, bossed the game. You can’t legislate for your goalkeeper being gutless for two of the only three attacks the opposition have.

Think we need to taper our expectations, we just finished third, if we can finish third or second and win something then I think that would be a solid spring board.
