I feel like he`s been underrated for years. People kept shitting on him for being too slow/defensive liable in midfield but you`re not a starter for Pep in midfield for years if you`re not class.
After that long injury he had, he definitely lost some of his spark of those two brilliant Dortmund years 2012 and 2013. I think @padr81 often said that he seemed scared to commit to tackles etc.
But on the ball he`s still brilliant and seems to have carried City`s flow this season.

I called him a coward last year and I stand by that, he was playing with a huge amount of fear (likely after the injuries he's had), pulling out of tackles etc.. while his positioning and brain were keeping him in the game. Whatever clicked over the summer we've seen a new Gundogan, not only is he most importantly now working like a Pep midfielder (as in running himself into the ground, tackling, tactical fouling etc...) he's also found a new confidence on the ball, last couple of years he was solid and composed but never confident to do the magic he's doing now. It feels like this is the first season where we've got the real Gundogan, how he was at Dortmund. He's been better than KDB so far.

Interesting observations. I’d say the things you’re talking about there are similar things I’d say Luke Shaw has recently added back to his game. I wouldn’t be surprised if both players had been playing within themselves due to fears of constant injuries, and are now performing without that fear.

Glad he's playing well, hopefully they won't re-sign Douglas Luiz in the summer.

It seems to be like this with Coman at Bayern as well. all three seem to trust their body again.

His form has coincided with being allowed freedom to move into the final third more. Think that’s massively upped his confidence. There’s times he’s further ahead of the play than even de Bruyne.

Isn’t Douglas a 6? Gündogan’s improved form has come with him playing as one of two 8s so I don’t think it makes much difference to whether City resign him or not.

He's been great this season. Great to see him get some of his old mojo back. He'll obviously never be as physically dominant as he once was but he's playing at a very high level regardless.

Agree the goals are flowing for him again because of that.

Bump.

Must be the most astonishing comeback of a player ever?
it’s not even just the goals, it’s the all round play. He’s dominating games, he’s everywhere. His movement in and around the box. He’s moving like some peak centre forward. He’s gone from a player last season who hid behind De Bruyne playing square balls and shirking confrontation to probably the most complete midfielder in the country.
He’s basically a new signing..

Yeah he's been fantastic. It seems like with Silva gone he's far more assure of his spot and crucially role in the team and is playing with far more confidence and conviction.

In for a shout for POTY this year? Would be far more deserving than Henderson was last season.

What's his best position , is he a play maker or defensive mid fielder or box to box, I think he's a bit of all 3

Seems to have been a tactical tweak as his underlying stats in terms of goal threat shot up through the roof about halfway through this season.

I would say so, I'd say so far this season its between him, KDB, Salah, Kane and Bruno.

Yuh, he’s the stand out player certainly since city’s revival.
He’s in good company though, Grealish , Dias, Bruno and Kane all with a shout.

Forgot about him, another good shout though he seems to be falling a way a little bit lately.
How? He's scored and assisted in 4 of his last 5 games and has been playing well too. Definitely in the top 3 players this season imo.

City actually much better and more balanced with him than Silva. I meant a CM playing in CM role while AM playing in CM role, shouldn’t be surprising and what was Pep doing before?

I think people forgot how quality this guy was at Dortmund and we the fans wanted him badly to replace Carrick, he was bundesliga title winner and runner up of CL. This is why I keep saying since the beginning of this season, man city still have better squad and XI than united because there are more than half players in their XI that I consider as upgrade to our XI and gundogan included. That’s why I said Pep should be doing better than what he did the start of season.

Absolute baller. Thought he was finished after his back problems but he’s in absolutely the form of his life. Although I do remember him being more mobile before his injuries.

What the hell is going on with him? He's a completely different player. It's so weird.
