That's usually the case for the vast majority of football teams though. That's why they are squad players and not in the starting XI. I'm sure Villarreal's squad players aren't as good as their starting XI but they still made five subs and consequently looked fresher and were the better team in extra time.
This x100. I have no clue who the players Villareal brought on are, but they did a job and did it well.

Where has this utter myth that we don’t spend big on players come from?
Sorry, I didn’t explain that well. What I mean is that some managers, with a stronger track record than Ole’s, will keep asking for more players, even after the club has spent and be a royal pain in the owner’s arses. Whereas Ole hasn’t built up that currency and, let’s be honest, if he somehow managed to talk himself out of this job he’s not exactly going to land at Barca or PSG or whatever. Zidane was probably a bad example as he’s had much the same at Madrid of late. I’m not suggesting we don’t spend big in our way.

It’s all very well talking the talk but you have to be able to back it up. There is nothing to suggest he can at this stage. Conte walked from inter because they wouldn’t back him to take the club to the next level. Ole would never do something so bold.
What a noble thing to do.
Inter lost $120m in 2020, and they stand to lose somewhere between $180m and $250m by the end of 2021.
Their owners are even actively trying to sell the club.
Real headscratcher why he won't be backed in the summer.

Let's see if Ole is backed this summer and not jump to the conclusion that he won't.
I believe he will be backed, and then there won't be any excuses if we don't challenge for the league next season.

I like Ole but last night is on him. The refusal to make any changes, followed by the obvious and bizarre playing for penalties. Ludicrous. We should have been going for the win and trying to avoid it going to pens.

Rashford should have been off at HT. keeping him on for an extra 75 minutes for penalties (whilst taking off Greenwood) was utter delusion - we may as well have been playing with 10 men.

Im still not “Ole out” but I’m really disappointed with his decisions last night. I thought the starting lineup was good, but he needs to be more adaptable and willing to change things up when it isn’t working. As the game went on, Villarreal clearly looked fresher and the match was slipping away from us - to not make any chances to try to counter that was just plain poor management.

Ole will get next season, of course. No one expects him to be sacked. But surely if we don't take another step forward, it will be time for a change. It's not a great leap to go from what looks like progress to actually stagnating.

Well then why do we even have a manager? Sack Ole, save £10m/year or whatever he is on, let the players manage themselves. Out of all the football supporters in the world we should understand and appreciate what a really good manager can do like nobody else but instead we got people saying that manager's position basically means feck all.
I’m not saying OLE is the man, I’m saying the team needs drastic changes.

A much needed defense of Ole

Tough one to take last night. We had the better players but they played their gameplan well and got the win on penalties.

Here's a few questions and answers in defense of Ole's reign and last night.

Which players would the Ole outers have brought on to change the game up? Weren't all our best players out there? Would Donny, Mata, Amad or Dan James have given us a better chance to open up their defense? I'm not sure

The reason I like what Ole is doing is because it's in step with the history of our club. Gradual progression, promoting youth and playing the game the right way. He hasn't got all the players he needs to play it the way he wants at the moment but in time I think he will get there. Promoting Greenwood, Rashford, Pogba, Cavani and Bruno and shipping Fellaini and Lukaku all point to what I want to see.

The above players do have their faults though and this is especially noticeable against packed defenses. Rashford for all his ability in space is not very good when the game is tightened. I think Ole knows this and that's why he is constantly pushing for Sancho. I think a Sancho or a Grealish will very quickly rectify a lot of the problems we are having breaking these teams down. Our football will instantly be much more pleasing on the eye as we get a lead in these types of games and then increase it as teams open up. City have 4 of these players that are all better in tight situations then our current 2. That's why they're more pleasing on the eye and win more games.

If we get a Sancho/Grealish and we don't play much better football and win more matches, I will gladly accept that the fault lies somewhere other than our playing squad, but at the moment I believe Ole knows what he needs just as he knew last year.

He's fixed the rot Mourinho left and he's turned the ship around. He deserves the key piece to really get this team going and then we can judge his work fairly.

Whoever is defending Ole for yesterday, get a grip. Nothing wrong by admitting he fecked up, clueless in-game management and failing to adapt cost us the game.

Ole has helped us make progress but last night was the perfect illustration of his flaws

  • The gameplan/tactics weren't working
  • didn't know how/unwilling to change it tactically
  • didn't know/unwilling to see how different players would fare
we got what we deserved.

I don't really understand the comparison to City really, I can't see any similarities in the match.

I'm not saying we were great or anything, and I think Ole should have gambled a bit more with subs to keep the pressure on during extra time. I also think he should have been ruthless and swapped DDG for Hendo for the shootout.

However, Villareal's entire gameplan was smash and grab, they didn't deserve it any more than Stoke or Burnley do when they anti-football their way to a win. It got them the trophy, so good for them, but it's not like we were beaten by "tactical genius", we just couldn't break down a parked bus (which we've struggled with all season).
So in other words it's the perfect tactic to beat us and they succeeded?

Maybe next time their manager will come out all guns blazing and allow us to score 5 or 6 on the counter.

We can't break down teams that sit deep often enough, everyone knows it. It's up to ole to fix it going forward.

I actually agree with this. You can still be patient with the manager in the process whilst accepting he royally fecked up yesterday.

Ole has had 2.5 seasons and spent £307m to improve on what he had before. Maguire £78m, Bissaka £50m, Fernandes £50m, VDB £35m etc. Taking out his half season only CIty have spent more.

With expenditure this summer it could rise to anywhere between £350-£500m. I don't think anyone can say he hasn't had backing, the question is whether Ole is the right man to get the best out of this side. As an outsider i'd say not

What changes would you have made realistically though? James for Rashford yes but then James still wouldn't be able to get in behind either. We need to get more players in that can support and add to the first team as clearly the bench players can't be trusted (based on previous performances).

The failure for me is the fact we didn't push for the second as much as we should after equalizing. The momentum was with us then and Solskjaer needed to find a way of taking advantage for those 10-20 mins

Won't be a good luck when we announce his new contract.

I can see the quotes now.....

At this stage just leave him on his current contract. 12 months to win a trophy.

He has been given plenty of time at this stage. Excuses are well and truly gone

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
The truth is that United have spent the most money of any club in Europe over the last 5 years (the last 10 transfer windows) other than City.
Aye. If Ole is only here so they don’t spend money they must have choked on their cornflakes when they saw us spend a record 80m on a CB and another record 50m on a RB.

What I love about the agenda shitesters is how the goal posts have changed so much. Originally it was he’s out of his depth, embarrassing he was hired, nobody else would hire him, we’re a laughing stock and he’s gone by Xmas. Now that craven toxic bullwank still seeps out but they now coat it with he’s a Glazer shill just to get top 4 ignoring the fact guaranteeing top 4 makes him better than 95% of managers already which is odd as he’s an incompetent PE teacher apparently. The Good enough for second but not first argument is based on zero evidence at all. No other manager would have finished higher than third with pereira and Lingard as our attacking heavyweights. Nobody would have finished higher than second this year with a midfield of Mcfred and Lindelof a key starter. What is undeniable is he gets the maximum out of his squad over a season. So how about instead of quoting ABU cnuts like Burley against a club legend we wait and see what he does when he’s given a squad capable of challenging instead of judging him as being incapable of “elevating” a side whatever that shit means.

I agree. He will get next season, but what will be progress.
1. Getting nearer to the team who win the league?
2. Getting out of the CL group stage?
3. Winning a trophy, any fecking trophy?
4. Learning how to defend properly?
5. Not being baffled by the low block?
6. Showing a bit of ruthlessness if someone is not performing to the standard we expect?

Took over a team that finished second. Spent 200m and won nothing.

There’s no good post about it. He’s rubbish...

Conte did the same job and came back with a title.
He took all the dirt we didn’t want, including Sanchez. Do not want. Wouldn’t put much on winning the Italian league at the moment

do you not think we have a better cb, Rb and forwards since he took charge? Do you not think the morale and togetherness of the squad is much better? Do you read many leaks these days?

I'd agree with this, he's got twelve months to deliver a trophy. Simply qualifying for the Champions league next season isn't enough for me.

So what. Every manager gets rid of deadwood.

Conte had to get rid of their main target man in Icardi. Alexis wasn’t even a key player for us. He was already failing.

It’s time for a proper manager to handle this squad full of great talent. We’re a great car driven by a lousy driver, let’s stick a Hamilton/Verstappen behind the wheels - since we’re so incredibly stuck on that Ole’s at the wheel-crap. Honestly, with a proper manager we could see a dramatic transformation in our attacking game in a matter of games. I get depressed and jealous when I see City or Bayern play football which is just hammering our dull stuff to pieces.

I will agree if he realises that those players you name are not good enough. If he still goes on showing blind loyalty then it will become a problem. People are saying we need two or three players, he says he needs two or three players. Think we need more than that.

He is looking more of a pochettino at this point in time. Takes a good leap forward but falls short of the big target. He will be given next season but if we don't win anything again it's time to part ways.

If we were to replace him, who would people want? We need to go for a top class manager that focuses on positive, attacking football. I can’t help but feel like all the managers that fit the criteria are in jobs already.

He needs to win the league or be in a title fight and win a cup for me.

2 years is enough to bring in a midfielder if you want to help you play a more possession oriented style or coach the current lot into doing so.
Wouldn't you say the players have improved under him? What I'm seeing is that while McFred et al have improved, they don't quite have it as first teamers. That's no shame, and they are damn good squad players, but in a proper team that is what they are.

And wouldn't you also say that he would likely have had that midfielder already, if he wasn't having to be forced into a sell to buy purchase model which neither of the two previous managers before him, really had? Wouldn't you say that the majority of the players he's brought in have provided a net benefit to the team and squad?

James or Amad for Rashford would have been the obvious one. James gets a lot of stick, but he couldnt have done worse than Rashford, and I think he wouldve been great late on when the game was starting to get stretched, running against tired legs. Amad for Greenwood or Pogba (with Bruno dropping deeper as he wasnt getting any space high up the pitch) would be another option.

VDB would have been a decent option - he is neat and tidy on the ball and has good movement. Mata too.

I agree that we need more squad depth, but you simply cant just leave the same players out there for almost two hours, whilst the opponent has brought on 5-6 fresh pairs of legs, when the game is clearly slipping away from you and the players are visibly struggling with fatigue.

He needs the players. If he doesn't get them then we'll be at this exact same debate all over again next season

One thing I noted was Ferguson's reaction after Axel scored and it was one of joy. Ole looked very apprehensive/anxious throughout most of the entire penalty shootout. Contrast that with Emery's poise during the shootout and there seems to be a big distance in terms of mental strength. Now Ole may have been overjoyed to see Axel score too due to the camera changing but I think looking dejected through most of it isn't a good sign of leadership. There has been talk of the team being 'bottlers' but I think some of the blame can be pinned on Ole. I am in the 'I don't know' camp when it comes to him.

Agreed with this. Its gutting to lose a final in such a pathetic manner and Ole needs to carry the can for this one.

Its not entirely his fault though, besides a few like McTomminay and Greenwood most of the players let us and themselves down yesterday

I think I saw 58 or 59 matches this season, I cannot remember anytime prior to the games that I thought, this is going to be easy, and probably the only match that I relaxed was against Southampton after they went down to 10 men.
The victory against Brighton away was the most undeserved win I’ve seen in over 60 years. Ole is an icon as a player but far from it as a manager, he’s too indecisive. I’m afraid he’s not shown any reason why he should be successful and turn this round. There’s only been one manager to turn things around, and that’s Sir Alex, and Ole ain’t him!

Next season is make or break. Wins a title and pushes for the league if that doesn't happen then he will get sacked. If he is out of the running before Christmas he will be gone.

He won the league because the Italian league is pish standard at the moment

anyway I was referring more to his judgement
Yep the Prem is great. I mean Man United are second but can’t beat 7th in La Liga.

Come on man. You’ve got to agree we need an elite manager. This has to stop.

This is laughably dishonest. Ole took over a team in 6th, and in freefall, and if you have to pretend otherwise to back up your argument then maybe your argument isn't very good.

It isn't a "perfect" tactic no, it's very risky as if we'd turned up they'd have been put to the sword, and just defending that much means you need a lot of luck with bounces/deflections, etc.

Having said that, I agree entirely with the bolded part, let's hope for a productive summer transfer window.

Why are 99% the defense of Ole hypothetical?

IF he signs X/Y...IF he gets rid...IF...IF...

Truth lies somewhere between the two sides but last night really illustrated his lack of guts and game management.

Truly awful decisions made throughout the match.

Take a look at any of the recent Fergie interviews, that's a winning mentality, roll the dice, take a chance. Ole is far too risk averse and I can't see that ever changing. He's a defensive coach with the soundbites of an attacking one.

He probably deserves to start the next season due to our slightly improved league form, but I expect this debate will rumble on because he will always flatter to deceive in the long term.

Time to get your Ole Defenders bingo cards ready because you're going to see all the classics in the coming weeks. "The board let him down!", "He needs a (insert position here) before he can compete!", "Even Fergie would struggle to get a tune out of this team!", "What has Poch won?".
