The thing is, we have hit a bit of a ceiling when it comes to graphics. The technology to make 8k monitors and games are there, but is it worth it? Especially considering how absurdly time consuming and costly it would be to create games at that level of detail

ya, I’ve had a Xbox at launch (give or take a week or 2 for the 360 and One) and fair to say I’ve only played 3 launch games across the range, only 1 on actual launch and 2 later.
Launch is always drab as feck unfortunately so used to it, but I play a lot more these days with gamepass. Downloaded Dirt 5 and Wreckfest last night for easy fun.
you definitely need patience with Xbox. But I think they’ve listened to the community with some games coming down the line that even perk up my interest - it takes a hell of a lot for me to get into games as I have no real genre I love, I’m a very picky casual gamer if that makes any sense
have my new monitor ordered so can’t wait to see the FPS boosted games then first hand and have fun that way.

Funny how people can have such differing opinions, personally loved TLOU2, but understand if you didn’t enjoy it.
Also not to mention that graphically it is genuinely insane that it runs on the PS4, plus 60FPS update on the 5.
It's really overrated, for me at least. Agree that 4/5 you listed are fantastic. However Xbox also has tremendous exclusives, they just haven't released any yet.
I moved to Xbox for a few years to carry on my Destiny account (PSN got perma banned) so it ws nice to play the above when I got my PS5, great games!

Hardware (C) - supposedly what's under the hood is pretty good (B) but the form factor is absolutely terrible (D / E). Huge, clunky, ugly and with a terrible stand solution. The controller has cool features that have yet to be realized outside 1 game (and supposedly, one other in Returnal) which it deserves some props for but is then pulled down by the quality and reliability on triggers and sticks. A lot of people have issue with fan noise and/or coil whine which shouldn't be a thing this gen.
Features (D) - UI is clunky and has features missing from PS4. It has backwards compatibility and whilst it's good (considering we weren't sure what to expect) it is let down in it's implementation - no smart delivery (and for all we joked about it, that's actually been a huge issue for a lot of people!), no automatic cloud saves porting over unless you pay for ps+ and made sure that you were saving to cloud, an inability on devs to take easily take advantage of next gen hardware on backwards compat games (see Biomutant having terrible res/frames vs XSX, or Rocket League and COD that are 120fps on Xbox but still 60fps on PS5), plus it doesn't have PS3 support unlike Xbox for X360 (yes there are reasons for that due to code base (cell) but ultimately, it isn't there). Vs Xbox - no quick resume, no auto-HDR, no VRR, no 1440p native support, no FPS Boost which are all features that I use on my Xbox every single day.
Software (C) - There's been a lack of next-gen games on both consoles, and it doesn't have Gamepass which is leading the way.
First-party (C, maybe a B) - I gave a C but expecting it to be a B in a week or so when Ratchet & Clank comes out. Personally, I like Miles but it's an expansion and runs on PS4 - shouldn't even be considered a full release game. Dark Souls is a remaster, and for some a fantastic one and if you're one of those people - great, but I'm not going to give huge props to a game that can be played on PS3 minus the graphics. Returnal looks great. It'd be easy to dismiss Astrobot as a tech demo, but to be fair, it's pretty fecking great.
People get caught up on the dates a game is released - what's the difference between Miles and something like Ori, Wasteland 3, Gears 4, Horizon 4 which had next gen upgrades and could be considered to be just as next-gen (in Gears and FH4 case anyway). Of course this would also then apply to God of War, TLOU2 and Days Gone. Lines are being blurred by backwards compat and next-gen upgrades. If you can access a next-gen optimized version then to me that's all that matters.
Definitely can't consider giving an A when the price has been up'd to £70 on top.

That's fair I think, they can certainly improve on features/software. Games remains key for me and Sony's pipeline over the next couple of years will be ridiculous, that's what will get my custom every single time.

Hardware - It's a B for me because it's a small step behind Xbox, the form factor is marmite after all. Never had issues with fans or coil whine which would piss me off, I did get a replacement controller and it was hassle free really so overall a solid B.
Features - It lags behind but Sony always have here, the UI is just kind of there, it's functional but they need to build on it. I don't think even the biggest Sony supporter could argue that MS haven't smashed it here.

I've heard that the reason it came to Xbox quickly was because the OS is essentially Windows so the driver support was already there whereas Sony will have to integrate into the PS5 drivers.
I don't think it will be long though and it is just built into the drivers so any games should just pick it up when the update is ready. There's no reason why the developers would exclude it for PS5 on face value as it's pretty much the same hardware.

That is much more accessible and promising.
It's an AI resolution reconstruction technique like DLSS, so taking a lower resolution native signal and reconstructing a higher resolution from it. I'm curious to see how it compares to DLSS 2.0, which has come a long way since 1.0. The big difference is that DLSS is hardware accelerated and as such only supported by Nvidia RTX cards, while AMD's technique should work on a wide range of cards, including Nvidia's. In any case, potential performance gains are significant. It's the only way I can realistically see 4K at 60 fps on the better looking titles on consoles going forward.
There's no dedicated hardware on AMD GPU's though. It will be interesting to see how well it works having to use some of the GPU resource rather than push it to dedicated chips.
Expect it to be pretty poor the super resolution same as DLSS 1.0 i wouldn't be expecting anything groundbreaking anytime soon.
taken a gamble on Eve Spectrum. Some good community reviews so far from the testers - got it cheaper than retail since I put a deposit on ages ago, so I had to pay up or lose out as Eve are ready for the production run - so should have it late July as I’m not paying the extra €130 for priority shipping.
Tried to hold out and get the LG 27gp950 (same panel used by Eve as they got it off LG) but it’s nowhere to be got in Ireland and no sign of it coming in. Curry’s carry LG brand in Ireland and I’d say the demand in UK means no hope of it landing here. Searching Europe (that would ship to Ireland) brought no luck either.
