That's what I was asking about in the match thread. Punished for being clever. Remember Scholes and Giggs being punished for similar shrewdness back in the day.

Embarrassing.

This is worse than that. You could argue the referee hadn‘t agreed to start the game again. In this case, they literally didn’t know a basic rule which 99% of sunday league players know.

Giggs and Rooney. Vidic scored from the corner against Chelsea and it was disallowed.

I think.

It's because he came from off the pitch, isn't it?

Does that overrule the "no offside from a corner"?

I used to think I had a decent grasp of the laws of the game but not for a while now!

Can't be offside if you're off the pitch surely?

Wasn’t Daley Blind ruled offside once with us because he was off the pitch?

This was my first thought aswell. Surely it's not been called for offside?

Edit. After watching again the ball is definatley played to him whilst he was off the pitch, so how does this affect the state of play?

Didn’t he have his foot on the line when the pass was played, so he was technically on the pitch.

The ref has to give you permission to go off the pitch to be considered off. Otherwise you are considered on the byline when stepping off

If you're on the line you're on the pitch right? Thats how it works for the ball. All of it has to be out. So if its the same for players then hes offside?

I'm sure you're right.

I don't know why I'm trying to justify such a basic error, just seems mad!

Kinda nice to know it's not just English refs who are dogshit.

Is it an actual rule that you can't be offside from a corner? I always thought it was just one of those things where it's almost impossible but not a rule. They're passing it from the very corner of the pitch and usually there's a defender on the goalpost.. this time there was no defender and the recipient was ahead of the ball, therefore offside?

Is every bad refereeing decision in the Euros going to have a dedicated thread where the same things are said over and over?

Maybe a “Euro 2020: Refereeing Decisions” thread in the right forum would be a good idea.

As far as I know you can't be offside from a goal kick, a throw in or a corner.

The only conclusion I can come to is that it was because he stepped off the pitch.

Directly from a corner, from a goal kick and from a throw in - those are the 3 situations you can't be offside from.

Yeah, couldn't have been offside. Might have been a foul because he was off the pitch, i dunno. But it couldn't be offside

Bad decision, but what was the point of this move? Why not just pass it directly to Jorginho from the corner?

My thinking too. Don't know how it was advantageous.

Unrelated possibly but does anybody else remember Crespo scoring a goal after coming back onto the pitch from beyond the byline? Memory is fuzzy and I'm either googling the wrong thing or it never happened. @duffer may have an idea?

Against Arsenal. Screamer of a goal too.

Trying to gain an advantage by leaving field of play to confuse the turkey defenders would be my guess.
