Just comparing the defenders themselves without the teammates, vidic is superior.
You can't do that football is a team sports of 11 players and it is highly important for defenders and other players to build a chemistry. Once HM gets a proper team around him especially not as shite of a player as Lindelof we can judge him, also we hardly had a run for the title. Trophies define better players too. Let Maguire have a go with a team in full strength and even perhaps a better manager who understand modern football.

Also heading wise they are level, Defending wise on the ground, Vidic slightly edges Maguire, once again compare Maguire to Vidi when a passive and poor player like Lindelof doesn't create as much mess for him. We dominated a lot of teams also due to better midfield and world class attackers(in that I think we are not far in a year or two. That means the perception of players will be also very different when players can be bailed out by attackers and have much better defensive cohesion as a team resulting in less chances created for other teams..

Strength wise they are about the same
Attacking wise, Maguire is much better dribbler and passer of the ball. Even just comparing them stat by stat, skill by skill, Maguire is inch worse defender but superior in attacking sense. But yeah Vida didnt have to worry about that much because he had Rio Ferdinand and Carrick, Scholes in front of them. It's a nonsense to claim Vida was anything but above average on the ball, he mostly played it simple because he didn't have that ability to dictate the play and didn't have to because of players around him did it for him.

I am pleasantly surprised how Maguire has developed this year. He has grown into the captaincy role as well.

Every error Maguire made was blown out of proportion on social media, making even United fans think he's crap. If you look back at the Maguire thread, every goal we concede is his fault somehow.

I mean every defender makes mistakes, I have seen VVD make high profile mistakes but its not on twitter everyday.

We had to pay £80m for him but that was was we required, an English CB who will become a leader and has PL experience. Unfortunately, VVD set the bar for a £75m signing so he was labelled a flop.
Yeah as you said, if Maguire was portuguese, cost 10-20 million had some nice tan rather than a square head then unlike now when media wouldnt tear him to pieces with every little thing he's part of. He definitely took this team to another level and if he doesn't have to play like Ferdinand and Vidic in one CB defence than we will see even better Maguire, despite all this he sustained the immense pressure and became a true leader ability wise and mentality wise, playing all games possible too.

Also if in the near future if we win titles and even when England finally win Euros, he may be finally start to be rated, because trophies define good players at least in media and most fans perception. And the United team is still missing few players and perhaps a manager to get a real chance for it to happen. VVD struggled a lot with expectations and only when Klopp finally found balance and took their team to the top he started to be appreciated. Simple as.

He's literally not the same. That's the point; he had to improve and is doing so.
See: England game vs Denmark in the Autumn and United performances during the start and into the winter.

The slow-passing aspect is entirely legitimate as International football + different England team tactics is literally different to United's tactics in key games.
Nope, he’s always been good. People didn’t want to see it a year ago.

He's never been poorer in form, technique or play ever? Big claim.
If the bar you are setting is picking out his worst run of form in two years (linked to well known reasons) and saying he's improved from that, then yes he has. Otherwise he's been pretty consistent since he joined.

He's had a handful of poor games, name me a player who hasn't. He also went through a brief spell of poor form at the beginning of last season due to fatigue and the controversy over the summer. Besides that he's been generally excellent considering the circumstances

I think Maguire for England is a different player, a player we bought. He gets so far up the pitch with the ball. Something he does occasionally for UTD but regularly for England.

For me the main reason for this seems to be Pickford. Im not suggesting that we sign Pickford as I don't think he is top level. However he is vocal and controls his area. DDG basically stays on his line and I think this makes our defence nervous and they don't like to leave a gap between them and the keeper.

Can i just say as a Dane fan how annoying Maguire is to play against. Always a danger at set pieces, and reads the play so well.

My captain!

He’s had an immense tournament following on from an immense season for his club (bar a few ropey games early on, when he was obviously rattled from Greek shenanigans). Badly missed while he was injured. We’d have had a much better finish to the season with him in our team.

Brilliant performance from the big man once again. He’s only played half the tournament but he’s been the best centre-back on show, for my money. Class act.

Easily worth every penny, such an incredible upgrade on the numpties we had, a Captain and someone who plays almost every single game. feck, he can be out for 6 weeks and play a Euros like it’s a walk in the park.
Absolutely. He’s tremendous. Not perfect, but what player is? Another five or six seasons of playing at the level he has been and he’ll have repaid his transfer fee and then some.

Best defender at the Tournament, Laporte was great for Spain and the Italian pair have been good but Maguire is just more dominant.

It's unreal how easily he can lead a defensive shuffle like he has done for Gareth this tournament, the change for Germany was immense and he leads that. But asking them to do it at HT in ET was a bit much and showed until they finally got possession to end the Danish barrage.

I'd dare say you could make the claim for him as England's key man this tournament, especially the knockouts. Definitely have him over Bonucci-Cheillini who probably have the continental votes right now for defender of the tournament so far.

He is truly just a monster, if he had pace I think he would be the best defender on the planet.
One of the, I think Van Dijk just about beats him in everything. Don't think Maguire is any less good than Ruben Dias though.

And here I was having debates with people who said he wasn‘t our best and a great defender.
I hope he remains with us until he retires.

Van Dijk is obviously up there but I think Maguire reads the game better personally which I really rate highly as an important trait for a defender.

Absolutely agree about Dias, I looked recently and as far as stats that actually matter for defenders Maguire put Dias to shame last season in dramatic fashion.

Maguire reads the game very well indeed. Don't think there's much difference but Van Dijk id even better 1 vs 1.

I am not surprised by hearing that at all, Maguire is great, huge fan of him and a fantastic buy for the club.

I don't think so, he's a good defender but no way worth the money we paid for him.
He's had a decent tournament but we haven't faced any attack worth of note.
Thanks for proving my point.
