Been blindingly obvious all along that he's simply trying to get a better contract offer at Madrid.
Even if that is true, it might not be possible; Madrid are broke and he would know that. I know people have been burnt before, but the current circumstances are very different. I'm confident he's serious about leaving and his interest in signing for us is genuine.

Didn't Real want him to take a pay cut if he signs a new contract? Have a hard time seeing Varane accepting that.

Pursuing Varane and having it end with him signing a new contract at Madrid isn't the end of the world, as long as it doesn't cost us our second choice. And in this case a lot of the other CBs we've been linked with will be aware that Madrid may also be looking for a CB if Varane leaves, so I wouldn't be surprised if the likes of Kounde, Torres and whoever wait and see what happens.

Honestly, I really REALLY want Varane, but I’ve never understood why people hate ‘being used.’ We’re definitely upset if players end up not coming, but at the very least it drives up another team’s wages that they have to pay out. Why do people keep saying ‘Why isn’t United putting these rumours to bed??’

The problem many have is they believe we are waiting on other targets, who may end up elsewhere due to out dithering and spending precious transfer window time attempting a deal for someone who is just using the club for a better deal where he is and where he wants to stay.
That can seriously affect transfer plans and priorities.

I don’t think the club are taking it too seriously though to be honest.

Why would we give two shits what Real pay Varane if he stays there?

Because the higher the wages they pay, the more they get milked? Are you telling me you’re not enjoying Barcelona get railroaded right now?

That's funny but it's a bit of a once-off situation based on years of financial insanity and it doesn't actually affect us as United fans. For us thinking a top player might come only to find out he's using us to get a better deal is very annoying and happens far more often than a Barca style disaster.

Let's try simple maths here.
€12m/12 = €1m per month

I'd like to know how €1m/4 = £300k+ :houllier:

Outlets saying he wants £200kpw which I believe and hope is our newly introduced wage cap. DDG and Pogba leaving or taking pay cuts to get in line.
Well this is embarrassing

The knock on effect is that its leading to our PL rivals winning CL’s so no I’m not enjoying it .

I dont know why, has always annoyed me when players seem to show interest in coming here to get a new contract and it always seems to be the big SPanish clubs, right back to KLuivert who if my memory serves right actually did it twice.

As for our second choices, does concern me if its either of those two. I just dont seea big improvement for us in signing Torres at all, apart from his passing ability he hasnt really inpressed me any time I have seen him and Im not sold on Kounde especially either. To me, the figures bandied about, I feel both are over priced. If they are the choices I woul dsee Fofana as a better long term investment for anotehr £15m even though he isnt at there level yet.

But rather than that, I would rather our scond choices were from Serie A as there are two or three I rate higher from what I have seen who are far better value for me

I don't blame him for feeling that way when they have a still unproven 20 year old on higher wages than him and were willing to conpeltely blow up their wage structure for Alaba who's older

They need him more than he needs them right now and if they don't value him that way then I'd leave as well. A club legend like Ramos did the same even as the longtime club captain and Mr Madrid himself Ronaldo did the same coming off a 3rd straight CL title as soon as he felt disrespected by them
Doesn’t look good if all he want is more money. What’s his current salary at Real, and how much he is looking for?

I think this deal will happen. It probably would never have come to this but COVID-19 has had such a great financial impact on the spending beyond their means Spanish sides.

A playmaker is someone who 'makes plays' and doesn't necessarily have to be the main passer in the team. When you have the likes of Modric and Kroos in the team, they become the key play makers when it comes to transitioning play.
Yes, some teams have more than one playmaker, like Modric and Kroos in the 4-3-3 Madrid have been using, or Iniesta and Xavi for Barca in the past. How often do you see Modric and Kroos making forward runs into space ahead of the ball in the final third to be the man arriving at the end of a move? It is very rare. Their main function is to control possession and supply the front 3 or the full backs who push up. By your very loose definition any player in the world who's starting position on the formation sheet is number 10 can be described as a playmaker but that is obviously nonsense. Just like a false 9 player, you can also have a false 10 player whose role is closer to that of a striker than a midfielder.

Any outfield player can make plays, whether that be a CB, fullback or forward. To say otherwise is utter nonsense.

Is there any reason to think this is any more than a Ramos ' I want a pay rise but not really leaving till I'm 35' type rumour?

To be honest it’s eerily similar

I don't think so. Ramos was never going to leave while they were winning trophies. He's Spanish and has been at RM forever.
Varane may not come to us but I think he will leave this year or next.

To be fair, Varane has been at Real for 10 years and Ramos 15 years and we've been hearing the Ramos to United contract thing far more than 5 years.

Varane for cash to help Madrid bring in Mbappe all while they dismantle everything they’ve built for him - shades of Barca

I’m sure RM would gladly take £40m

There are reports starting to show that Madrid will up their offer, if that's the case I am relatively sure he will sign a new deal.

His current salary is 150k p/w. Lower than Maguire and Rashford. And Real Madrid probably want him to take paycut.
