It's interesting England is playing similar setup to United (progressing mostly through the wings, midfield responsible for defensive screening and only basic playmaking).
Meaning whatever issues we see here with Rice, we would see the same for the club.

I literally have no idea why people drool over this kid. Might as well just throw any old CB in at DM.

Bit harsh but he’s so limited, this midfield has zero presence.

He’s a centre back playing in midfield. Nowhere near enough to his game.

Posters here genuinely think he's good on the ball.

He has been great covering for Maguire on occasion.
Maguire doesnt need cover, he never gives the ball away on his runs. He successfully does it with us and we dont have a DM to our name.

People want us to spend £60m on him?

Even McTominay offers more than him and he shouldn't be starting for us. At least he was free.

The English Fred...I actually think Fred is better.
He's nothing like Fred. Fred to his credit never shies away from the ball and actually tries to progress the ball forward. Just his decision making lets him down occasionally.

England looking miles better now Philips has gone deepest and is actually trying to playmake.
He's twice the player Rice is.

It's seems like people want to celebrate Rice's mediocrity. Apparently, not being capable or willing to add layers to his game is a good thing.

I've seen all of England's games. Not once have I given him a thought or recognized that he is on the pitch. Really underwhelming and uninspired player.

He's just shit on the ball. Always wants to pass it backwards. Scared of turning with it. Doesn't want to commit an attacker before playing it.

Genuinely, no exaggeration, I believe Fred is better and would offer England as an example a massive improvement on Rice, player for player.

Fred progressed the ball well when he’s in form and is every bit as good defensively.

He’s been poor tonight for sure

He was good in the last game.

He was invisible against our Matic midfield x 2 last season

I really can’t make my mind up on him. He needs to do a lot more
He can't. He just doesn't have that much ability to work with.

Not seen enough from him to justify his price tag. Too much of a gamble. He might well become top class in the next few years but I don’t think we can afford to take the chance on him this summer.

Nowhere near good enough

We need a different profile of midfielder either way

Thought he was better than against Ukraine but thats not saying a lot. The weaknesses are plain enough to see, think its a terrible partnership as much as anything with Phillips and either would probably look better with Henderson. I think if he ever winds up getting games for a top 4 team it'll be as a cb. It'll be interesting to see how he fares against Veratti and co.

glad people are finally catching on.

throwing a few tackles around doesn’t cover being absolutely woeful on the ball.

There was a period in the 23rd minute (@GifLord do your thing) where instead of turning and taking the ball forward, he just passed it straight back to Maguire.

All night he played 5 yard crab passes and completely killed any momentum.

This is the type of team and performance he will be expected to play against regularly if playing for United, and in both games against stiff opposition (scotland and denmark) he’s completely failed.

Commentator in Finland´s national tv told something like "his only job on the pitch is to take care that other players can shine". It tells quite much about Rice. Typical £30M player who would cost double, or more.

This was against the Danes as well, wait until the Italian midfield are hounding him. Showed what he is tonight - basically a 3rd CB in midfield. Tactically that can work superbly, but for me we don't have the players to warrant signing him at all.

He was not great tonight, him and Phillips were getting steamrollered by the Danes. Southgate has a lot of work to do before we face that Italian midfield.

If he starts the final, the Irish and Jocks will be a lot happier than they are tonight. Lad got embarrassed tonight so feck knows what Italy would do to him :nervous:

Only hope is that stubborn Southgate sees how much more Henderson offered. Even then, it’s an average midfield in comparison to Italy but still, much better.
