Andrei Kanchelskis made me fall in love with Unite
Delighted with this news - Ole has done a brilliant job since he came in. That's not to say that there haven't been low points and he has definitely made some mistakes, but overall he's done fantastically. Looking at our squad now compared to when he came in it's such a massive improvement. He has given us some of our identity back and has the players playing for the badge again. We're not back to where we need to be yet but we're on the right track. Massive season this season.

Right, just like Poch at PSG.
Pretty much . PSG knew that he is not going to go anywhere and so gave him a year more. Heck even Chelsea gave Tuchel 2 years more only after he won the cl and got them to top 4. When you sign old players you give them 1+1 sort of deals because you want to keep your risks low and don’t want to kill yourself if it goes wrong . As far as I am concerned United held all the chips in this and the only reason to extend him was to show some backing and to take away the constant questions next season about his place . That could have been done with an year extension but nah we just like to throw money around just like we have with Phil jones , Lee Grant and Mata etc

Solskjaer is an exceptional man manager. The young core, including Sancho, will do well with him. Even if Pogba is running down his contract, Solskjaer will succeed in motivating him properly.

Overall its a deserved extension. I've been a big supporter of Ole on here and have always said I wouldn't judge him too harshly until his 3rd full season.
Hopefully he's backed with a couple more signings this window and can really push for the title with a good showing in the CL also.
If he is fully backed this window but fails to deliver this season, I think we should part ways.

What do you mean by fails to deliver? What would he have to achieve to not be seen as failing to deliver?

what job security? He’s one bad season away from being sacked. Always will be. Hell, he’s one really bad run of games away from being sacked. Need I remind you about the story of the special one, his shiny new contract and the sacking he got mid season?

Managers at top clubs have no job security. Winning is the only security they get.
Of course he still has to keep performing. If he doesn’t meet expectations he’s gone. Even so he’s surely earned a bit of breathing space and the knowledge the club backs him. Plus he’s got the security of a longer contract if it does all go south. It’s the right thing to do imo.

Had to be done. You can't have a manager not on the brink of retirement go through a season with his contract in question. It threatens revolt.
This. He's done enough to deserve to be backed with the 2 year extension. But he'll know he needs to produce now.

Literally go on every single social media platform. They are literally pissing themselves laughing whilst we spend hundreds of millions and are still watching our biggest rivals clean up all the trophies.

Nobody fears us and why would they? We can't even win second-rate trophies when we have the chance to do so
Football fans on social media are awful for the most part. I regret it every time I click on the comments because I forget momentarily.

Problem is, they need more than a best mate these players. They need a coach to help them fulfil their potential, to help them mould their game like Fergie did. I see none of that these days and that why the likes of Rashford, Pogba, Martial, etc etc are just floundering at the same level fundamentally.

With Woodward leaving though, Ole is safe till then no matter what. Even if we're bottom half at Christmas, Woodward won't rock the boat. Then the next CEO won't want to rock the boat either. I'd say Ole has a free ride this season.

Right and then we end up paying him off just like we did/are doing for Moyes, lbs and José. So, basically it’s ok to make bad business decisions and lose money, seems to be the consensus. Yet those same people then complain because we don’t have the funds for a midfielder. I’m like others, I feel a 1 year extension with another one year possible woulda been a smarter way to go. Unless they attached with it a bunch of performance based conditions that allow us to get out of paying him off if he doesn’t perform. If they did this then fine. I really want ole to succeed. And if we get him Varane and a DM then there are no excuses.
Paying off a manager, especially one, that is probably not on the highest wages, shouldn't be a factor when assessing the budget for player transfers. At the end of the day, we are talking about the team who hands out new contracts to seniors (hyperbole, I know).
Plus: you might be right - extending the contract in isolation may doesn't seem to be the smartest business decision but as long as there is nobody to take over the job of manager, the equation looks totally different. There is just nobody out there, available, skilled and with the pedigree and reputation needed to take over without firing up a big chunk of the fan base. Or who do you have in mind?

I am a bit sceptical of the current management team (specific aspects of their work) but just getting rid won't really help our situation.

I agree with that, especially the first part. Being a great guy is very good but it is like in most other areas of business, soft skills will only maximize potential if the actual knowledge/skill/ingenuity is there. Our competitors employ nice guys as well. But they bring even more to the table. Our competitor also employ great players, but their potential is very often maximized by playing as a coherent unit. Thats why we can do all transfers in the world but still be chasing behind.

In parenting, professional lives and elsewhere, the good cop bad cop routine works wonders. United now has the good cop who functions well in this role. There should be a task master with high degree technical knowledge. United is obviously missing this. The two sitting beside Solskjaer are hopeless.

In all seriousness, do we need to extend Ole? Even his contract is run down, I can't see any top European clubs offering him a contract. The team has perform well under his leadership but I am not convinced that he can bring the club to the next stage. This is the perfect season to see Ole can compete with this squad. I still consider City, Chelsea and Liverpool as front runner for the Premier league. Utd falls under the next groups of team with Leicester, West Ham and Tottenham. I hope Ole can prove me wrong.

He has made a positive step in appointing this set piece guy from Chelsea, however there needs to be a realisation that a more experienced number 2 who has fresh ideas, attacking mindset and willing to challenge his decisions is an absolute must. Have never hidden my feelings on him being appointed permanently but he is the Utd manager so will support
Huh? Our current assistant manager is inexperienced and a walkover? News to me.

Problem with losing Ole is that no-one else in there knows how to run the club properly. Its kinda like SAF. Easier for Chelsea to get the top manager since they are professional in running the club.

Take your point but they won the Champion's League
I don't know but I think results over 38 matches should hold more weight than a nice run in the CL. In fact, history shows the best team doesn't always win the CL because of a good draw and some luck. However, as the saying goes, "the table never lies." (sic)

I agree but you'd swap that for 2nd in the league.

Were we better than Chelsea under Lampard? Yes. Better than Chelsea under Tuchel? No. In fact, since coming in, he accumulated more points in the league in the time he was here than Ole did, plus doing better in the cup competitions too. Unless you're going to use how Lampard performed to take away from Tuchel's achievements?

Trying to put down the achievements of others to make Ole's failure of a season look better than it was seems to be the only approach. Simply put, 2 years in, if you haven't won a trophy after spending just as much, if not more than any other club in Europe, you have failed that season. He will get another chance this season but I'm not sure how much longer simply being nearly men will suffice. We need to start seeing more progressive football and trophies.

Yeah you’ve lost me! So are we promoting his use of kids or are we promoting his lack of use. Which side you on
I'm saying they're teenagers and he's right to give them their debuts in less meaningful games rather than dropping them into a match against City in the PL for their first senior game. Their debut should be in meaningless games and then, depending on how they do, they'll play more in more important games. That's how it works.

I suppose that depends on if you think he's the right manager. I still think it's very hard to win without playing high press because it is such a points machine.

I meán the the PE teacher thing is not totally baseless  But I don't mind him too much.
Ole in people's excuse was always that the club hasn't invested enough for his vision to work. If the club invest then he must deliver. Its as simple as that. Many (including myself) keeps speaking about Ole's superb man management. However I sometimes wonder if that comes to the price of him not kicking players out of their comfort zone by demanding success. We are becoming complacent regarding winning with Ole even saying that winning trophies is an ego thing more then anything else.

That’s not how football works. Like everything in life you earn your spot. If he wants to give them a taste of the first team in a meaningless game which allows him to rest the main players for a long season. It make sense. However you cannot use that example and say he is bringing through the youth or developing youth. The reasoning was just explained above which is why we don’t see those players throughout the season.

We need to stop defending things that don’t need defending.

He doesn’t bring through youth but so what. Neither did Jose and quite frankly I don’t think the majority of our fans care for it that much for it to need defending.

I'm neutral on this.. he really has to win a trophy or two within the next 3 seasons.
3 years? Seriously?

Under Ole, Manchester United had spent €318,577,000 on players. I suspect that doesn't include this year's signings. How much money does this guy needs to win a god damn trophy that matters? Is he here so that Carricky, Fletchery and the rest of the mates are employed and happy?

Don't insult Carricky and Fletchery. At least they won trophies before they left.

As a said before: Pep spent £532m his two first seasons. Kloop needed four years, and the two last seasons (before they won PL) he spent £356m.

So maybe a PL trophy cost more than most people think?

Ole's a shit manager, but hey if you enjoy top 4, with mediocre tactics with no trophies all power to you.
If he is shit and finished 3rd and 2nd in the league two last seasons, what does that say about the rest of the managers in the league?

As said, the 318m euros doesn't include Sancho (85m euros) and certainly does not include Varane's (60m euros). That will increase the expenditure to 463m euros. We might not be able to go toe to toe against City financially. However how much money does Ole need to bring a top trophy home? How much money did Villareal or Leipzig spent to get the better out of our manager and team?

Why are you comparing euros when they’re talking in gbp?

The idea that ole is the best we can do is truly and utterly remarkable. This is a job any manager in the world should be dying to have. United should be dictating his contract by extending it 1 year at a time because frankly it’s a privilege for him to be managing United and not the other way around
Indeed. Thing is, he doesn't have any other option. When he will inevitably get sacked, he will go back to manage in Norway. So, it is bizarre why United pays him 10m+/year and rushes to give him this new contract. You do that in cases, where he would get competing offers and the other big clubs will be lurking around, not when his other option is back to Norway.

Since you're quoting teams that beat us in individual games... By the same logic Ole is better than Pep because we beat them?

I am comparing teams in terms of milestones and trophies. How many trophies has Ole won with us?
