Manchester United sign Raphael Varane! (not in time for Leeds)

I wonder how important this shirt number thing is for pros? Anyone with some insight?

I suppose its important if a number has a significant relevance to a player's brand or marketing. E.g CR7, or if they have some superstitious or sentimental attachment to a particular number. Otherwise I'd wager most of them couldn't give a shite.

possibly. Not been used before.

55 Fred the Red
again, possibly.

see above

If true then can only be 55, 57, 60, 61, 62, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 72, 73, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98 or 99, which I doubt.
yes. I doubted this too but the lad who told me said it definitely hasn’t been misinterpreted as a number that nobody currently has and is going to be a number not had before.

I guess we have to wait and see.

think it was Les Ferdinand who tried to have 99 many moons again and was told to do one but I can’t see how they can turn numbers down now, especially with TAA having 66.

I also read that shirt number tweet as Varane is picking a number no Utd player has had before. If they did mean a shirt number not currently in use that has been used before, then they sure worded it weirdly.

So PSG had Messi sign a 35m a season contract in a matter of 4 days and already giving interviews , meanwhile e couldn't sort this out in two weeks? WTH are we doing?
Like they just started working on Messi's transfer when he started crying on the podium. Geez.

I’m thinking he takes 93, his year of birth and the year of our first league title after the 26 year drought. Hopefully he can help end this mini 8 year wait for another title.

Still hoping it’s the number 4. Find it strange that during Man Utd’s Instagram countdown to the start of the season they skipped number 4. Maybe they just didn’t want stick Aimed at Jones

No insight per se, but I think there is ego often tied up in these things. I imagine some care a lot, others couldn't care less. I also think maybe players with inferiority complexes care more.

Because would then have taken the sting out of seeing Chelsea beat that spanish rabble, plus the fact I have wanted to sign him since the summer of 2011 and now he is here and done medical I have finally reached the impatient stage

My guess is 22. Similar to Sancho with the 25 (2+5=7)

If we don’t sell Jones soon he’ll be stuck with that number for a while though. Joannes is contract goes until 2024 correct? At least Sancho only has to wait for his number seven shirt for one season.

While it is only a number. It’s a little annoying when somebody is at the club that doesn’t provide any value in taking up a key number spot
The way things are looking 6 could be up for grabs as soon as 7 is

What's taking so long :/

The reveal better be fecking directed by Christopher Nolan, with Christian Bale, Denzel Washington acting out a scene, Stormzy, Ed Sheeran and BTS singing with Daft Punk in the background spinning tunes to reveal Varane floating in the middle of Old Trafford on a jetbackpack.

i'm confused, are people just angry because of impatience or did you think he'd debut against leeds? With the quarantine and Brexit crap, I thought everyone was assuming he'd likely be ready for GW 2 or 3?

does 24 or 48 hours and contract finalisation mean anything in terms of when he'd be ready for us?

They've shown it, we have seen footage of him training in the the garden of the house we are putting him up in. What he can't do until he is officially a United player is train with our players and practice game play scenarios.
That was when he was quarantining. And then he wasn't able to train with the team because of the medical. I'm sure he'd be allowed to train on Thursday regardless of the status.

The life has been sucked out of these transfers this year by the ridiculous amount of time between agreeing and announcing.

Great signings though.

Trent's got away with it for some reason. Still uses 66
I read somewhere (it was probably on here tbf) that youth players are allowed to have sillier higher numbers. Januzaj and Mejbri both had/have 44, for instance. Saka was 77. Shoretire was 74

Not sure how true that is, but it does align a bit?

Edit: doing a bit of research (like 2 Google searches), it seems like an unwritten rule that youth players are allowed higher shirt numbers which will normally change to ‘proper’ numbers in their next season, whilst senior transfer players should start and stay with ‘proper’ numbers.

I really hope we've got this right. Of course Varane is a top CB - let's just hope he fits with Maguire (or Lindelof should Harry get injured). This is a position were pairings are vital. Obviously, I'm thinking Bruce-Pally, and Rio-Vidic... well actually Rio probably with anyone because he was in a different class. Can you imagine if he'd played alongside Stam?!

I happen to think Lindelof is a good CB but just not the right partner for Maguire. So, let's hope we've gone for the right guy. I'm in no way saying we've got it wrong but he is going to have to settle in damn fast
