Complete dross against a weak team. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Southampton get a second. The failure to invest in the midfield is as comical as it is predictable.

Martial has no future with Utd. What is he contribution in the 1st half? 1 header cleared off the line. How many touches did he have? Fred, oh Fred! There are so many time where good weighted pass would put our players in on goal and what did you do? Please pull Matic and Martial off with VDV and Sancho.

We’ve had plenty of chances to score, they have had a rather fortuitous goal so there is an element of bad luck involved. However, we can surely play much better than this, the tempo of our passing is far too slow and if we can speed up our passing then we can get a result. Sancho to come on at half time!
We've seen that exact first half so many times over the last two years that you can't really blame it on luck anymore.

Thankfully we've been pretty good at 2nd half comebacks, though.

Get Martial off ASAP. We had a counter attack early on and Martial instead of sprinting like a Greyhound was just jogging.

We have been poor overall as well. This is the type of team City beat blindfolded.

Says it all about Southampton’s flukey goal and our wastefulness.
Eurgh. We had about 3 set pieces in the space of 2 mins where we should’ve scored from all 3

Don't change a Winning team as the old saying goes. Our flow totally gone.
Taking of James is a good change. He was one of the few who looked out of place the first match. If McT is injured than Ole is forced to change that.

He kept Lindelof on and has Varane on the bench. If United wins today i hope Ole wont wait till a game is lost to swap Varane in for Lindelof?

I think we will still win but this is making me think of we've learnt anything from last year. If this was a better team, I'd be worried.

I wonder what the feck was going through Ole's head when he made the decision to start Matic and Martial.

Massive to get off to a good start and we get this.. Shambles

Bring on McTominay for Matic, Lingard for Fred, Sancho for Martial. Move Pogba in midfield.

If I see one more dumbass post with sell Martial, I swear. Cavani didn't look that much better last season with our shit midfield and he's been out for ages.

What the hell do people expect him to do?
When he gets the ball to feet with his back to goal, he loses the ball almost always. And that's the only way to use him as a #9 as he doesn't really make the runs Rashford would make (or Greenwood did last game). For the corner when Matic had that header, he was in the best position to feed off the scraps, but in the replay you see that he waits to see whether to goalie saves it, while Pogba is already there in case the keeper fumbles it. He's just so off it for a striker that I don't get your preciousness about him. I agree that we shouldn't sell him now with limited options and his stock so low, but his bottom level is atrocious, not least that his work rate (that's not a myth, just watch for yourself) is very poor.

I'd rather see Greenwood up top and Sancho on the right, but I guess it's about match fitness and of course Ole hoping Martial can play himself into some acceptable form. Hope he does. But he's a pretty irritating player to watch up top when the team needs to graft.

Martial, like Lingard, kills the teams creativity. He’s a hinderance and it’s about time he was marginalised.

I wouldn't even be mad if we lose this, we still have Matic and Fred in midfield. And it's the same team as last year, how are we expecting to improve here? Relying on the ol' "coaching will improve us" again?

Martial is so impotent it is sad. Hopefully this is not a repeat of the last season, but this first half was sad to watch. Few dangerous attacks mixed with serious mediocrity.

    Few points

    1. Continuing to play out at the back even though 4/5 times they get the ball. Why? Stupidity and no intelligence from the players/coaching staff.
    2. What are Southampton good at? Corners and free-kicks between the box and half-way line. Someone tell our players this?
    3. Lindelof absolutely awful passing out from the back, also missed a great chance. Back to my thoughts pre-match, why not start your best players? Varane smashes that in.
    4. Martial might as well not be playing
    5. No urgency overall, have lost the momentum from Leeds already. Where is the spark?

Obvious change is Sancho for Martial but we must wait until 60 minutes at least for that (this is a rule!). Highly doubt Ole brings Varane on, pre match I thought okay he's on the bench, he's only coming on if there's an injury. But bring him on now is a risk worth taking. Lindelof is shite.

Apart from set plays we have created nothing. Very disappointing performance so far.

Rashford, Cavani, Greenwood and Sancho are the players who will come to dominate our 3 forward positions this season.
Martial and Pogba just don't do it for me. Too lethargic when the going gets tough Is the norm for them. Two extremely frustrating players.

It's been 6 years since Martial has joined and apart from some flashes I have not seen anything special from him. In fact I will say he is regressing. Looks absolutely lost as a number 9.

No major complaints here. We’ve had all the chances and they fluked a goal. We’ll get at least one goal in the second half.

Southampton fans have been really quiet considering they're 1-0 up and the covid absence.

Greenwood is too far away from the box on that left wing, I've no idea why you'd disrupt a potential good run of form as striker to play Martial instead.
He needs to go up front, I think Bruno played a lot better with Greenwood up front as well.
Martial is offering sod all and needs hooking for Sancho

Matic is so slow in his decision making that he keeps giving hospital passes to his teammates who then immediately lose the ball. He is contributing nothing and stinking up the place.
Not just Matic. There has been too much sideways passing between Maguire and lindelof. Just waiting ...for what? For the Saints to get back into position.
