Mostly harmless
Well within his rights to let his contract run down and get a big sign on fee. He owes nothing to a club or its fans that terms him as an "asset". He should do what's best for him.

If it meant kicking up a fuss and leaving sooner to play to get a shot at England WC team. And if he believes he can still do that from United AND get a good sign on when he leaves, then good for him.

Half the fans here are deluded to believe that every single person should treat the "club" as some saintly charitable entity and do right by it when it has, itself, mostly gone about its operations like a commercial entity. An incompetent one. But a commercial one none the less.

So what he plays himself into form then what? Back to the bench at United? What use is that really?

How many games will Lingard actually start?
Well none of us know that, I’m just saying what the player and Ole both said about the loan

Looks like another case of our delusional feckwit owners holding out for a big fee that we were never going to get and refusing to sanction a much needed sale as a result. I take back the negative things I said about Lingard, it looks like he would have happily accepted a move.

I accept United are guilty of overpricing fringe players but in the instance of Jesse, what would you say was a fair price? I don’t think 25m was an unreasonable ask… maybe with room for a little negotiation over top line and payment terms.
I think it was over priced. The fact that nobody sniffed around tells us that.

player almost out of contract. I think 15m with maybe a few add-ons would have been fair

I do believe if we had told him he'd not be more than a squad/fringe player, he probably would've reconsidered his options but sure, if we were to sell him for 15 to 20 million pounds, we'd have to find somebody else for that type of money.
We wouldn't have to find anyone else, we are way overloaded in those three attacking positions that Lingard can play in. Sancho, Greenwood, Rashford, Martial, Pogba, Bruno, Diallo, Mata, Donny and even Ronaldo, and I've probably overlooked one or two as well.

But it really does make me wonder WTF Solskjaer is actually telling these players about first team game time.
I'm getting the feeling that there are some confetti promises being strewn about, and if so, that's going to start causing him problems when these players are continually warming the bench or not even making the matchday squad in some cases.

But time will tell, we'll see what unfolds...

All true and, lets face it, nothing we haven't seen before.

How long have we been hawking Andreas around with a delusional asking price?

How long did the club chase money for the likes of Rojo and Romero.

I think back to Darmian, who thought for sure he was leaving two summers in a row, only for United to hold out for money that was never coming and end up letting him go for about a third of what we asked Milan for.

The way the club is run beggars belief. We can make our kids and women's team change in portacabins because we don't want to spend on upgrades to Carrington. However, we are happy to pay millions in wages to players who will be lucky if they get two dozen appearances between them every season. Just look at the length of deal we gave Matic! Four years when he was already, obviously, on his last legs.

The costs the club tries to control, as opposed to the ones it doesn't, baffle me. Don't understand it at all.

We could have easily got our wage bill down by a significant amount if we just accepted smaller fees for players, or stopped renewing the deals of unwanted players. Jesse's actually done United a favour by refusing a new deal. Would anyone be surprised if in a couple years time Bailly is still here, Jones is still here and the club are briefing journalists we can't buy any more players until we get some off the wage bill?

Do you not think he owes the slightest bit of gratitude and loyalty to the club that brought him through the academy? He's been with us since 2000, 15 years at the club (excluding loan years), a little bit of gratitude to ensure we get some sort of a fee for him would be nice.

Make up your minds, either you want him to leave or you want him to stay? Oh wait you want him to sign a contact just so you can sell him?
you’ve literally listened to nothing. If he goes free, which is his right; he has more options which will suit his family circumstances.
He has to do what is right for him.
He owes United nothing. Just as United feel they owe players nothing in many cases before him
I think we’re going to have to disagree on this one, I don’t think Lingard has conducted himself well at all, saying he wants to fight for a place while simultaneously saying he won’t sign a contract is very contradictory and we don’t know anything about his circumstances other than his mother is sick so I don’t know how anyone can argue for or against it unless he says so himself.

The only way I could see it as a mistake that it’s some negotiation tactic that he hasn’t thought through entirely.

No. Why? United would have turfed him out before now if it didn't believe it would get something back from Jesse. The academy isn't a charitable institution for young lads. Also Jesse can rightly point to having scored in a couple of cup finals and say: 'There you go. Investment repaid.'

The stuff about his family is no secret it’s out there and he has talked about it

I still fail to see why you (and some others) have said he hasn’t conducted himself well? What is it that he’s did wrong to say that or for others to call him a twat or a slime ball?

I don’t get it

Most reports and rumours are indicating he wanted to stay and fight for his place and/or rundown his contract.

Absolutely agree with you, I'm equally baffled, how 'penny pinchers' can at the same time be so profligate.
I've said many times, the sheer incompetence and wastage of Millions would get you the sack in any other financial role.

It’s simple he’s potentially costing the club millions of pounds to walk away on a free when he could have left in the summer for a fee but choose not to.

It’s either offer him a contract and get a fee for him, have a squad option, not have to spend millions replacing him or just watch him walk on a free that will probably cost £5.6m in wages about £20m in fee or £45m in a replacement not really that crazy.

If United was a proper company, and not the Glazer family piggybank, shareholder activism would have led to the Board being replaced long, long ago.

There is no well run business in the world that will let you spend so much money, so randomly and get away with it. But the Glazers don't care about United being well run, they just want the dividend to be consistent and available. So everything else just gets swept under the carpet.

Play the guy as DMC in Pirlo role, if Fred doesn't play against Newcastle. Could be instant solution - Jesse presses great, his passing range is very good in tight spaces

He's only good enough as back up to Bruno, regardless of recent West Ham or England exploits. Any contract offered should reflect this status, and if it doesn't work for him, he should rightfully move on. No right or wrong in this. I don't see what the club or player has done wrong.

We wouldn't have gotten a decent fee even if sold over the summer, West Ham clearly were willing to wait. So it's no big loss if he goes on a free after being a decent Bruno back up in his final year.

I think, maybe just think, that he will be able to look after his family ok, having trousered millions of pounds in wages this last 5-6 years.

He's not a league 2 player on £450 a week, weighing up whether to move to a club offering £500 a week.

Don't understand the outrage, this makes great sense. Obviously he wants to play, he however isn't sure he will play. So he's giving it a run until Jan to see if he can get some playing time. This is a world cup year after all. If that fails, he'll probably seek a move in Jan in order to get that playing time somewhere else. He's an academy player, obviously in his mind the best would be him playing here. He's more than good enough to get quality mins here and really shouldn't be cast aside. Why would he sign a contract that would make it hard for him to move in Jan?

Sorry but what warrants calling him a slime ball?
My opinion, of a player who has decided to stay, collect a wage, play few minutes, and collect a signing on bonus next summer, when apparently there was a chance for him to go to West Ham this summer and play more football.

What's wrong with giving United one more year? He may want to give it one more year to stay and fight for his place/playtime. If it doesn't look like he'll get it, then he'll move on. I don't see the issue here?

There was never a chance for him to go to West Ham, it has been clear Jesse didn't want to leave again from all the noises coming out the club and we valued him rather highly.

I don't see the fuss around a signing on bonus either? You always get a signing on bonus when you sign for a new club regardless if you go on a free or not. If I remember correctly, players get 10% of their own fee, so if anything, he's missing out on that!

Based on what, and who does he come in for? I have no problem with him running down his contract, but to say he wants to be in England contention, but then stay at United does not seem consistent.

I'm sure ideally he'd like to stay but just wants to wait and see how many minutes he's getting before committing to it which is fair enough. We don't know for sure whether he had the option to go back to West Ham this summer but even if he did I don't blame him for rejecting that opportunity. He'll have the likes of Arsenal, Leicester, Spurs to choose from next year if he doesn't sign a new contract here.

If he ends up barely playing and leaving for free he can't be blamed for Ole telling him he was in his plans, for the club giving him wages that other clubs can't come close to matching, or valuing him too high in the last window.

If he wants to stay and fight for his place then why wouldn’t he stay for 2-3 years? Seems like he’s already got one foot out the door..

I don't get why some are so soft on him just because he came from the academy, the same academy by the way that trained him and the club that gave him a platform to become a multi millionaire, yet apparently who some of our fans feel he owes nothing. I honestly feel the biggest issue is Ole not being blunt and just telling him he'll hardly be playing, instead not wanting to be mean and stockpiling 9 players for 3 positions.

I hope Jessie and Pogba leaving on a free teaches the club to stop the nonsense and just sell players like Chelsea do. It's holding us back.

Because it's his one last chance may be giving himself?

He may think to himself, I'll give it this one last go and then I have to leave.

So he wants to play for United but doesn’t want to play for them at the same time, got it!

Eh?

It's clear as day he wants to play for United, but the lad has a career to think about. He knows he is not at the top of the list but wants to fight for it and is giving himself another year it seems. Which is shown by his unwillingness to sign a contract if he can't get assurances that he'll play. He still has several more years in him as a player and most likely wants to make the most of it. As shown by giving him 1 more year to prove his worth before deciding calling it a day and moving on to somewhere that may give him the assurances that he is looking for.

That's not him not wanting to play for United it's not a black/white decision, there's a whole host of contributing factors to his decision here. He knows he can't sit on the bench all the time as shown by not wanting to sign the contract yet. if he can't force himself into the squad he'll move on.

I don't see why this is a problem?
