Drinking at seats in football grounds could be reinstated

It's been permitted at other sports as far as I can remember.

The only thing I would worry about is Dave from Daventry chucking his pint when Fred misplaces a pass.

I can’t wait to get drenched by people throwing their beers about the next time I’m at a match.

It got reinstated in Russia for the World Cup (and World Cup only) and it was really nice. But then the atmosphere was generally friendly there as most of the supporters weren’t actively rooting for any of the competing sides, so it’s a bit different to, say, United - Liverpool or Arsenal - Spurs where flying beers would be a high probability.

Alcohol at sport venues has been banned in Norway since forever. The reason being that sport in Norway is assosciated with family, fair competition and healthy living. Spectating sporting events is very often a family event. Having drunk people at the grounds can potentially be unsafe for children if a huge scuffle erupts because of intoxication, or more importantly: children being around family members that get drunk at games. The point is that the ideal atmosphere for young people is generally not places where alcohol is served.

That being said: Norwegian football has allowed alcohol serving in 2021 AT the stadium (It has previousy been circumvented by serving alcohol in places connected to the stadium, just not at the stadium itself) and I havent heard about any massive issues surrounding it.

Personally, I don't feel that being shit faced drunk on the stands is all that fun for young people who are just there to watch the game. Most people can limit themselves and ejoy a beer or two but you'll always have a ton of people who just can't control themselves. Theres so many potential negatives when it comes to increased alcohol intake at sporting events, such as fighting, being excessively rowdy, to throwing beer down the stands. The only positive is that you get to drink beer. Not sure how anyone can legitimately defend that without only thinking about themselves.

The beer probably costs more than a ticket to the champions league final.

Beer is flowing freely in Germany, didn't seem to be much of a problem yet.

wouldnt want to be sat anywhere close to the away fans as i suspect it will be pints of piss rather than beer making its way overhead
This just came to my mind. They have to put up a roof over the player tunnel entrance or else they're going to get pelted with plastic cups when they enter and leave

People leaving their spot and pushing past to continually get more beers would be annoying, I don't see how these change would be for the better.

you mean i’ll have to decide between downing a warm, flat carling, racially abusing a player, arguing with a steward or punching an oppo fan? it’s a lot to keep a track of. or are they planning to extend the halves so i can fit it all in?

This is about allowing people to buy a drink and drink it in their seat which is allowed in most other sports so I'm not sure it will increase drunkenness at all.

They can already buy and drink alcohol in the concourse before the game and at half time which tends to lead to people drinking more quickly than they normally would. I never really understood the logic behind banning people from having a drink in their seat, rather than banning it altogether.

Even if alcohol was banned completely at the ground those looking to get hammered will just get hammered before the game anyway.

I'm a firm believer that any prohibition is counter productive and that people should be treated as adults.

The weird thing about this though for me is that Ireland has never had a hooligan culture or a problem with any kind of trouble at sporting grounds but we've got the same ban as the UK. I don't get it at all.

I am a bit torn on this, on one hand it would be nice to have a beer whilst watching the game as it would avoid the rush at half time. However, there are a lot of things I would absolutely hate:

1) everyone is going to get drenched whenever their is a goal scored in the Stretford end or the equivalent at other grounds. This goes double for the big games as contentious decisions will also cause this in pockets.

2) People are going to constantly be going back and forth for another beer/the toilet. This will be annoying.

3) There will be more paralytic people in the stands. Introduce this and I can see people rocking up early to 'settle in' to their seat.

4) if you do away games and their is a tier overhanging you. Good luck.

Don’t really think this it’s necessary tbh. In what way does it improve the experience?

Im not against alcohol just don’t see the need here.

Will just lead to more people getting up for a p*ss every five minutes and drunken fools making a nuisance of themselves.

Well when I was at OT the other week it took me and my brother so long to get drinks at half time we decided to just get one bottle and cane it between us in 30 seconds. And we still missed the second half kickoff. It’s not about getting drunk and belligerent, but would be nice to take it to the stand.

Most if not all nfl stadiums stop selling after the third quarter. Maybe the PL could do the same at the half.

Yeah the queues won't really improve though will they? I mean people shouldn't be leaving the match to get another beer. Personally I can just easily wait until the game is over to go back on the p*ss.

Each to their own, I just haven't missed it at games in the past so not sure it's really all that necessary.

Step 1: one person has to take a piss
Step 2: that person gets beer for the rest of the group on his way back
Step 3: another person has to take a piss

And time and time again people prove that‘s a mistake.

No, it just would have been nice to be able to get a drink each and take it back to the stand. I don’t drink a lot and don’t get drunk often but do like a beer, and the buzz definitely lubricates the vocal chords. Really feel like moderate drinkers like me suffer because too many people are pissheads that can’t handle themselves.

People enjoy having a beer and watching sport. If you don't want a beer don't have one, simple.

Football fans pay a lot of money and they should be allowed to drink what they want. It's fecking nanny state bullshit telling adults (paying customers) they must have a soft drink.

Edit: aussie rules, rugby, cricket, nfl, baseball don't have the issues you predict.

Also lots of fans sink pints before going in the ground and the issues you raise aren't happening.

Yeah exactly. Not really worth being soaked in beer and p*ssheads stumbling about all for a warm beer in a plastic cup.

I've been to enough home & away United games to tell you this wont work in the long run will end up with beers chucked at the opposite fans, at players on the pitch more likely scuffles/violence will increase.

I'd love to be able to stand with a pint and watch the match, i and 90% of other people wouldn't cause an issue, but i can guarantee the remaining 10% would.

I was at West Ham on Sunday i can imagine the carnage after the late goal and penalty if we all had pints in our hands

I've been to Old Trafford only once for, may God forgive me for uttering this word, Partizan game in Europa League.

I was underneath the away fans terrace and there was this one guy constantly turning around and showing the finger and doing an air wank with his hand towards the away fans. He was a bit tipsy too. Steward ejected him after one or two warnings.

If you get kicked for silly provocations, I figure you'll surely get kicked for spraying beers around and such misdemeanour.

If people do dumb shit they'll get ejected so the drinks inside should be fine as long as people behave and stewards kick out those that don't.

Only downside to it is that I inevitably have to hold in my pee from the 3rd minute until half time and the 47th minute until the final whistle.

Well that, and the single digid IQ people throwing their beer around.

Me happy me throw beer. Me mad me also throw beer.

I like a beer as much as the next guy bud, just don't think it's desperately needed at the stadium. It's one of them things that the smaller minority of idiots spoil for the rest.

The village idiots will only become louder with the racist nonsense, people getting up for a p*ss every 30 seconds, getting drenched in beer. It won't be me all that much but might spoil the experience a tad for kids/families attending... All for a pint of flat beer in a plastic cup?

It works in other sports. but then in other sports, you have people who support different teams being civil enough to be able to sit next to each other.

Hate the stereotype, but Football really does have some of the worst sports supporters. Having the ability to buy alcohol constantly would be quite... something.

Look at the state of the England fans at the Euros before the final. You want that at every football ground on a Saturday? I love a pint and football but the vast majority of English football fans are absolute morons.

Yeah totally agree on the bolded, I'm exactly the same, I enjoy a beer and would probably have the odd one in the stadium, it would just be the usual village idiots that spoil it for the rest though.

Unfortunately we need to make allowances in life for the idiots, that will never change. As I've got kids now who are approaching the age where I could start taking them along to the stadium I'm probably seeing it a little different to how I would have a few years back.

I'm not sure it would be the right move. Drunk football fans have the reputation of becoming unpleasant to say the least. On the other hand perhaps it can improve the atmosphere in certain games.
