Stability is a myth.

What we have right now couldn't be further from stability anyway. A manager out his depth and a bloated squad half of whom want to leave.
And three years is the average, you can't reasonably expect to go beyond average, it cannot be your starting point. People seem to not realize that 2 or 3 good years is what the club should plan for and if the manager is successful and shows that he has more than 2 or 3 years in him then you plan for 2-3 more years and you repeat that process. You don't plan on 6-7 years when you have no way to know if the manager will be a success, longevity is the fruit of success.

Hot take.

Conte is not more risk averse or defensive than Ole.

Absolutely delusional to reject Conte because he's pragmatic when Ole is that and so much more.
This is true, but also something of a false dichotomy, no?

The question isn't whether or not Conte would be better than Ole (he would). The question is whether Conte is a better option than Zidane, Rogers, Ten Hag, Pochettino, Potter etc .

Exactly.

Klopp at Liverpool has been the longest and most stable manager-squad combination we've seen in football since SAF retired, and likely will ever see. And that's because he's one of the top two managers in the world.

The only point you can start to think long term is after you've won that first title/CL and the manager has fully cemented their credentials.

It's mad that you've included Potter amongst that list of names.

Despite what people like to say about Ole, he has laid extremely promising foundations here. We need someone who will come in and build on those foundations.

I believe Conte would rip up those foundations.

This. But unfortunately some of our fans have been spoiled by Fergie's incredible tenure. They think any manager coming here is required to stay for 50 years or something. The reality is that even Fergie, nor the board expected him to stay here for more than a few years. Things just turned out in that way, he enjoyed it here, he couldn't stop winning, he worked well with the board until the Gibraltar fiasco and so time flew by. It was not the plan that he should stay here for so long, but it simply happened. Before that he stayed in Mirreen for 4 years, Aberdeen 8, Scotland 1. About average for any manager.

We as a football club have to go with the flow. If a manager likes it here and is successful, we can give him time. But there is absolutely no point in planning for a start that the manager should stay here +10 years. Sir Busby and Sir Alex are not your run of the mill managers, they are one in a million. And club appointments can't run on the idea of recreating another Busby or SAF. That's a losing strategy from the start.

The obsession with the past needs to end. There wont be another SAF. Get a manager with a great CV. If he works great otherwise fire away.
There is a reason why the top clubs are ruthless when it comes to managers. Its the only model that works.

The only issue is just how top heavy our squad is. We're already leaving great players out playing three up top, playing two up top will only exacerbate the issue. Sancho, Rashford, Greenwood, Ronaldo, Cavani all for just two positions?

It's so weird for me that it takes 10 hours to go from the Netherlands to the UK but I can barely get to Texas in 10 hours
It takes less than 5 hours to go from Rotterdam to Felixstowe. Both are quite large ports.

Whoever comes in has to come in and do it their way, Solksjaer was almost like a Brexit tribute act harking back to the glorious past.
The next boss has to take a Fergie like approach and improve the players on big contracts who aren't performing week in, week out like De Gea, Maguire, Shaw and Pogba - possibly AWB as well - or move them on quickly.

Conte keen on Manchester United job as players doubt Solskjær’s capability
  • Former Chelsea manager would welcome Old Trafford talks
  • Players like Solskjær but think he is tactically not up to task

Antonio Conte would be open to discussing taking over at Manchester United if Ole Gunnar Solskjær were sacked, while it emerged on Monday that several players are questioning whether the Norwegian can take the team any further.

Several dressing-room sources have told the Guardian that Sunday’s 5-0 capitulation to Liverpool at Old Trafford has crystallised a lack of belief in Solskjær being a good enough manager for United. The 48-year-old is considered tactically underwhelming, while being well-liked by the squad and within the wider club.

United are thought to be seriously considering Solskjær’s future after taking one point from their past four Premier League games. Joel Glazer, who heads the American family’s ownership, resides in Florida, five hours behind the UK, so any decision may be taken later on Monday. The managing director, Richard Arnold, is understood to have cancelled all appointments on Monday to hold talks with Glazer.

Conte has not received any formal contact from the club. Although the Italian is reluctant to take up a position during a season, he would make an exception for United because he considers the club a special opportunity. The 52-year-old would want to understand United’s vision before committing.

Conte would be a great option for two or three years until a more progressive coach becomes available. At the very least it will be refreshing to see actual tactics and organisation on show at United again.

Do you not think Contes very personality and nature would change everything in terms of dynamics? Even though I think we've got a good team, does it fit with how Conte would like to play? I'm not sure it does. I'm just not convinced he's the right man for right now even though I really rate him as a manager.
Conte would like to play a wining way. That’s all that matters. All these people wanting this free flowing, high pressing, entertaining wining team need to wake up and smell the coffee. The best two at doing that in the business are at City and Liverpool, so if you are wanting to go down that road you will be getting the 3rd best at doing that.(and that’s no guarantee either).

Chelsea are the perfect example of wining a different way, because its the only way. No point in trying to out play Klopp and Pep at their own game. It will end in tears!

Dude, I guess if the noises starting to rumble about Conte coming in are to be believed, one of us will be proved right eh? At the very least, it will be a hell of a ride!

Not my preferred manager at all, but him taking the job for the rest of the season, then go all in for Ten Hag wouldn’t be too bad.

It's not the type we went for, it's who we got that has fecked us. We could have gotten Pep, Klopp, Tuchel - all three very different from each other in the way they play and still be successful because they improve players and play a system that is better than the sum of its parts.

Get in Conte. Give him the target to win the league next season and let him bring in his players to reach that target.
Going from a possession based approach to Mourinho's approach is a huge huge jump. Ofcourse that's a problem. Ole doesnt have much of a defined style, so its easier for the next manager to stamp his style on the team rather than start from scratch, and I'd rather we have someone who plays attacking modern football, and not someone like Conte, who is another Mourinho. I'd say our current style of play(atleast last season) is closer to attacking than pragmatic, and I'd want us to lean more in that direction than undo all of that.

This is the right answer. And if he pulls off a PL, CL (unlikely with his CL record) or FA Cup plus great campaign in one of the other two, maybe then you keep him long term like Chelsea did with Tuchel.

We need this man. He is brilliant it is undeniable. He and Zidane are the managers that compare to what City, Liverpool and Chelsea have.

Watch out, Conte. You'll get a very detailed vision explanation, consisting of lots of "DNA" and "United way" terms. Which basically translates to "jobs for the mates", "stone-age football" and "promoting the youth" thrown in there for good fun.

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
I said in the past that, in hindsight, LVG and Mourinho were always past it and doomed to fail here. Especially Jose after his Chelsea meltdown. I just hope Conte won't fall into this bracket.

I'd honestly be a lot happier to give Potter or Ten Hag a chance and I don't care what people say, I'm sure we could convince either to come now for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Barcelona isn't as attractive a proposition right now, before anybody mentions that option for Ten Hag.

The constant "how can you say [insert negative thing about prospective manager] when Ole [insert worse thing about current manager]" comments are strawmen.
Exactly. Its not Conte vs Ole, its Conte vs Zidane and Conte vs Ten Haag.

Also, what other clubs like Chelsea did is irrelevant. Like Chelsea we got Mourinho, and like Bayern we got LVG, that didnt work out did it?

Highly unlikely. He is doing extraordinary well in Ajax, he has much football left to paly for, including CL, he is not poor by any means and he is a highly sought after manager. He's not gonna leave Ajax in the middle of the season to deal with Ole's shit. We'd have a chance at the end of the season, but now is next to impossible. We tried this same thing with Klopp and he wouldn't come here. Very few managers are ever going to abandon their clubs in the middle of the season just because a big club is after them.
Are you saying he would refuse the enormous pay raise, the chance to manage Man Utd, and coach players like Ronaldo, Varane, Sancho, Rashford and Bruno, to stay at Ajax?

correct answer, not the right fit at all and this will just be a short term fix, i understand people are desperate for change as am I but Conte is not the answer for this club, it will be Mourinho all over again, not so much the style of football or comparing their personalities but just a really bad appointment that is poler opposite to what the identity of your club is all about.

It's like Pep leaving City and then replacing him with Simeone or when Chelsea hired Sarri , you then end up with players being signed and players being sold because they don't fit the current manager's system but then when that manager leaves and you then bring another manager in with a different style you then have the same problem over and over again, it doesn't work.

He refused other teams in the summer. Not out of the realms of possibility that he wants to finish the season at Ajax.

Seems like something of a non sequitur, but for the record, Potter wouldn't be my pick and I would certainly take Conte over him (and I'd take Conte over Rodgers and Zidane, too), but he (Potter) is nevertheless the 5th favourite for the job according to Paddypower's odds.

This point is, this is not a choice between Conte and Solskjaer - it's a choice between Conte and every other possible option.

But...it's not?

We're in October. Any manager currently employed isn't leaving their current squad unless they're from some small irrelevant football club. Maybe Brendan (this isn't a dig at Leicester, this is just going off history of Brendan leaving Celtic) if we're desperate enough. So it's:

Conte vs. Ole vs. Zidane vs. other unemployed managers.

You sign whoever you think is best to a 2 year deal (they won't take less). If they suck/are mediocre you then weigh the decision in the summer vs employed managers.

National Team managers are a no-go until 2023 unfortunately.

At what point is it too late? That is the real question. We are still alive in Champions League and while a title this year in the PL seems out of touch, the top 4 is still in our sights.
So what point is it too late to make the change? Our form now will see us out of top 4 and CL within the next month or so. I love Ole and respect what he has done for the club but our tactics are awful.... JUST AWFUL!!!! How boring are we to watch? We go out sluggish and move the ball around in the same way we do every game... same old boring side to side movement. Give it away stupidly, and boom down a goal to nil. Hopefully the guys wake up and fight for a draw or a late winner. That is the DNA of this team and it sucks.

Seeing all these posts about we need this or that. Jesus, this team has more talent than most national teams. We have no gel or teamwork. We need a manager that will make us better not keep us afloat.

I can think of a few players that would not last under Conte, you know the ones who have their pr teams talk to the press every time they’re upset. The brats wouldn’t cope with his cut throat style, one hint of less than 100% effort then you’ll be gone.

Be careful what you wish for boys.
