If you think DVB is why we didn't create much in the first half I don't know what to tell you. The entire team was scared shitless and were obviously more concerned with keeping a clean sheet.
You just say he was not that good at that (attacking plays). At least not today.

I said the game was not the kind of game he is suited to. I can see you've made lots of posts in this thread tonight though so I'll leave you to your obsession.

Occasionally he'll have a good game but every time hes asked to string a few performances together he falls apart.

Started in a 433 today. Hes played in pretty much every position from a 6 to a 10 now and not really shone in any of them.

He reminds me a bit of Kagawa. Tidy player, should be great, but somehow he just can't do it in this league.

I won't be harsh on him this game. He experienced the same problems Bruno has all season - that is being isolated from the rest of the team and midfield especially, but obviously he doesn't have Bruno's quality to produce magical moments at any moment. I want to see him in midfield with Fred and Bruno. McTominay is fecking horrible, beyond bad. Not only he misplaces passes often, he doesn't press and hides all the time from the ball. At least Fred is trying, playing with McTominay is like playing with a man down all game.

I reckon a midfield trio of Fred-Donny and Bruno would be quite a bit of improvement on our play. Matic when he is needed, maybe Hannibal from time to time. But never fecking McTominay. I don't want to see him playing another match for us ever again.

Pretty sure he was playing a Spanish side.

haha what?!

I mean is it really the real reason? He has not been suited to (according to the likes of you) or he is not that good at United after being here for about a year and half.

I am saying in this thread that the myth that the United seemed to be more solid or balance (idk wth that means there) with him while he contributed pretty much just a body on the pitch with probably one of the worst performances in recent years in that 60 mins is pretty funny because it was not true.

Want to see him have a run of games.
THIS!

Everyone should try and stop over analysing every performance, even just holding judgement until player xyz has had 3 back to back games, then come to some conclusions...it would make the entire site a better place.

Man, you're taking the piss. Donny played bad, but McTominay has been playing bad for 3 feckign seasons now and always had a guaranteed starting spot. Even today he was much worse than Donny. Last week Donny was our best player. Let's give him a run of games before showing him the door. It's absolutely unreasonable to expect a player who has barely played these past 2 years to suddenly be the new Maradona.

Yeah, that would probably be because his few performances are strung across 6 months, instead of consecutive. Maybe if he was given a few games in a row he might be able to find some consistency.

Donny looked good early on but we were getting battered in the first half…De Gea’s gloves were ripped to tatters.

A good sub by Carrick to bring him off.

Yeah our biggest problem is getting the ball past the defence and double pivot, transitioning from defence to attack quickly. VDB's biggest asset is exactly this, one touch quick penetrating passes from deep into an attacking player. I feel like that will be wasted with him playing the no.10 role, where he'll be making aggressive runs into the box expecting to be found by the likes of Fred and McTominay. We'll have to see though, Carrick may have implemented a new system.
This all happened. He shouldn't be playing in Bruno's position, I thought Carrick would've been wise to the benefit of playing him deeper being a DLP himself. it's like playing Carrick in a no.10 role, doesn't play to his strengths at all.

I am all for giving him a run because at this point we have to use everything we have and see if it works.

And what had anything to do with Mctominay and my posts?

Like I said, I don't get people saying how he made the United more balanced today. Well more balanced means camping at our own side for a good 60 mins while lucky to not conceded and could not create anything much the other end.

And I am taking the piss here?

That was pretty much a nothing performance.

It didn't help that the whole team was devoid of any confidence in the 1st half.

McTominay is the problem because Donny was isolated from the rest of the team, much like Bruno, because he is a cowardly player and playing with him automatically means we lose our midfield. This is the same thing that has caused Bruno's lack of form for us. We need a midfeld without McT. Also, of course we're not balanced, but saying he has produced one of the worst performances for United is an absolute joke when McTominay was stinking up the field. In fact, the entire team bar Sancho and De Gea were trash in the first half.

Baffling. We see the impact he has in a deeper role and Carrick decides to play in as a #10.

Look, McT and Fred are atrocious at times and still playing every feking minute, even when they're injured! They cost us a lot of times. I have one question: When was the real run of games for the Dutch lad to see what he's capable of really? To judge him really if he ca do it or not.

I said the team performance was one of the worst recently.

Also, Tommy had a better game than Donny. And, we all know how Tommy is not our standard lately.

No, he didn't. He was gash, as usual. And of course he isn't our standard, I don't think he is even PL relegation standard at this point.

According to whoscored and when I was watching the game, Tommy had a better game.

He doesn't take Bruno's spot anytime soon, thats for sure.

He got a start and didnt really impress, but wasnt terrible either. He will get more minutes now.

It’s not a terribly complicated problem to work out to have Bruno and Donny playing together. Yes, that would mean dropping McTominay but that’s like dropping a turd…you just do it.

If McTominay were a magnificent holding mid then you play him and drop Fred, but we get nothing out of McFred.

No need to bring Ole into it. We’re not a possession recycling side as much as I would like us to be. Maybe dvb eith matic could work. Think Fred and dvb could be disastrous. Sides had most success in that position with Rodri, Fernandinho and Fabinho who are all pretty robust in the tackle. Maybe Poch would get a tune out of dvb, he’s arguably most equipped to play like Eriksen from our squad.
McTominay's tackling isn't much better than Donny's, it's mostly his sliding tackle. But again I'd rather have a midfielder that isn't a calamity on the ball and positions better defensively than one that has to make last ditch sliding tackles constantly.

I like Matic (or new DM) + Fred but I'd rather see Donny than McTominay in every position on the pitch with the exception of goalkeeper.

Poor today, unfortunately. He seems to be better coming off the bench when we throw every man into attack.

Ironically, our poor central midfield makes it harder for him to get playtime. I think he's more suited for a high defensive line, but he's never taking Bruno's spot and a high defensive line protected by McTominay, Fred or Matic as the DM seems like suicide.

I hope to see him get more playtime in the midfield two, but I'm not confident that it's going to work under Carrick or Poch(if he indeed takes over).

I'd play him in a deeper role. One of mcfred has to make way for donny.

Agreed. We can’t progress the ball with Fred and McTominay. It puts too much of a burden on whoever is at #10.

Think it’s important we can have a team in which he can play alongside bruno playing and not in his place. Bruno brings too much for us in that number 10 role that playing DVB will always be seen as a downgrade.

I believe he’s capable of playing as a number 8 or 6 and I’m sure would do better than Mctominay.

He needs regular playing time. This is thie first time in a very long time he has played two games in a row for longer than 5 mins.

it’s his second season, but awkwardly I’ll say it’s early days to judge. He needs a good run of games, he hasn’t had that at united. With bruno around, he made the #10 position his. That won’t change and i really think that isn’t vdb’s best position in the set up. I think we’ll get much more from him in the central midfield position where he’ll link the lines together. We currently don’t have that as McFred are not capable of doing the vital role of taking the ball from the back and distributing it forward. VDB can do that. He showed a glimpse of what he can do against watford (the only good thing from that game).

the pressure is now on VDB, he will get more chances I think and it’s on him to show what he can do.

but again, i did not see enough of him to say he isn’t good enough.

He is not a 10, the difference when Bruno came on was immense.
I hope we give him a few games in the middle to see if he could fill that number 8 role.

Thing started happening when VDB came off and Bruno came on. Yeah, Bruno is the superior player and all - but it was also the way Bruno dropped back to get the ball and make things happen. If VDB did it, I honestly missed it. He just wasn’t involved in the game at all

A run of games is needed to properly assess him. He's never had consistently so far. He is a good player without a doubt. I would prefer him playing next to Fred, in a more restricted role because his ability to link up could be more useful than what McTominay could ever provide.

He should play the way it suits the team, not the other way around. He is not the GOAT to expect that everyone else will adapt to him.

When he's part of a certain kind of attacking movement, he generally looks good (as in, he finds himself in the right positions and makes the right decisions). But he hardly ever looks as though he's capable of actually influencing anything directly: the game just sort of drifts past him, and he isn't capable of imposing himself on it at all.

Several posters have compared him to Kagawa - which is apt enough.
