There cannot be any doubt he'd sit at the top table with the greatest.

That assist tonight....just wow.

At this point, you have to rate him as the best midfielder of the last 20 years.

Absolute beast. How was he sprinting so fast at the end after 120 mins!

The pass is just awesome. Camavinga coming on to let him go further forward really freed him up to create.

Great player.

Chelsea were fantastic tonight but that moment of pure Modric genius changed the game. Don't think I've ever seen a more sublimely executed pass. Just stunning technique.

I took more pleasure from his ability to compete and be combative against the likes of Havertz, Kante, Loftus Cheek and Kovacic who are all at least 5 years or more his junior.

I know it's off topic, but it makes my blood boil watching Modric do this at 36 in a game of this magnitude knowing my midfielders cannot even dream of having a chance in that type of battle.

The assist was a bonus, but it was beautiful.

As Romano eluded: “that’s not football, that’s art” couldn’t agree more

Well said. Even without his assist, he still had an immense game

Top 5. To be spoken about in the same breath as Scholes, Zizu, Xavi and Iniesta. Modern day #1 baller.

He sits at the best table, let's just put it that way.

People talking in ‘Tiers’ is so childish. There are just players better than most players of their generation. He’s one of them.

Even allowing for that…. While Perfect for many teams, he’d be a waste of space in others.

This insane need to have an absolute list in an acceptance order is madness. Obviously some players are better than others, but the 100 best midfielders ever are in a totally different order in 100 different formations under 100 different managers.
Yeah, I don't understand why some people feel the need to talk in absolutes. We're lucky to have seen the likes of Zidane, Xavi, Iniesta, Scholes and Modric. If they gave you joy, you won.

Trying to convince some rando on the internet that one is better than the other is much less fun than appreciating the craft and accepting the differences. Not everything needs a conclusion. They were all fantastic to watch in very different ways as part of very different sides.

Great midfielder obviously but just when people are saying he’s the greatest of all time, Real Madrid never really take hold of games. Outplayed on the ball in both games here, had less possession and have often had less, relative to any team with Xavi which would dominate the ball.

I just love Pirlo as a player so much. Exactly my type of player. Modric too. Begrudgingly I also think Xabi Alonso was class.

Scholes or Modric?
Modric by quite a distance in my opinion. He will go down as one of the all time greatest midfielders.

Pirlo was definitely a better long passer, better set piece taker too.

Because possession is everything? Its about impact. Modrić has been the heartbeat of the midfield of the most successful modern day club side during his time there. He's up there with anyone IMO

While I obviously agree with this, I don't really think it's a stick to beat Modric with. Real has mostly been a counterattacking team for all the time Modric has been there. They haven't really had a Guardiola type of manager. I'm sure he would have slotted in that Barcelona side just fine.

Not sure it’s his fault he’s not playing for Pep. Imagine him in that Barca team or this City team.

What a player.

Him or Pirlo is the only question really, isn't it ?
Pirlo isn't close to the top let's be honest. He was class but like, if say he's more Scholes and Kroos level rather than Modrić, who is part of Xavi/Iniesta/Zidane tier for me.

It's mad how my fellow Bosnian and I have almost the same username and also share literally the same opinions :D

I just wanted to say that for me Pirlo and Scholes are level below Luka.

Incredible player. You watch him put in a shift like that for 120 minutes at 36 and wonder how long he can keep going. He seems to be getting better.

It wasn't just the moments of genius which you expect either - the guy was pressing, sprinting and harrying from the first minute to the last.

Wow, the disrespect for Pirlo, he without a shadow of a doubt is on their level. Y'all musta forgot how good this man was.

I think Pirlo was at in the Xavi Iniesta Zidane level but right at the bottom end, Iniesta Xavi Zidane Pirlo would be 1 tier for me, can’t forget Pirlos performances for Italy also World Cup and European championships, he was voted 3rd best player in the 06 World Cup for example.
