Why did we miss out on Kamara?

The simple answer might be that he isn't good enough, or it could be that Garner or Hannibal are better or reasonable backups so no need, or Fred or McTominay.

Part of the answer has to be that we are getting someone else, but surely we still would have benefitted from a quality DM number 2 or is that the problem. Were Villa offering him to be number 1 and we want backup to someone else coming in.

At a time when we need a proper squad overhaul I just don't see how we can afford to miss out on a talented free transfer option like this one. Surely the risk here would have been minimal versus the reward.

As for the other options I'm not convinced any of them are right. Hannibal maybe. Garner has been playing further forward. Fred and Mctominay are better further forward as well. If anything we need to reduce the number of backups here and bring in players like Kamara who are specialist in the DM position.

It is apparently a blind spot that every major club has regarding him, or there is something else at play when clubs have approached him/his team. It isn't as if there aren't a few clubs who could use a central midfielder.

He went to fecking Villa, it doesn't look like there was a beeline on his agent's call log.

4 clubs interested apparently, but do have to assume they are clubs in worse positions like Everton!

Surely you don't pick Villa over clubs in European competitions.

There definitely is some hype around him. May just be social media noise, but even Romano is describing this as a big transfer.

He’s a really good player and this is typical of our club not acting quickly and decisively in a position we desperately need. That makes us ‘know it alls’ for wanting this transfer. Can’t wait for us to try to sign him £70 million in two years.

This is how I'm seeing it too. The free transfer thing might have made us find him more attractive than he actually is. Let's watch him play next season. He won't be at Villa for long if he pulls up trees.

Don’t see signings there, maybe big contract improvement for McFred

I'm not sure we missed out on Kamara particularly, but we absolutely have a blind spot for recruiting black/Afro-French midfielders, when you look at how many have played in the PL over the years and how many we get linked with, yet never come close to signing.

If he moved to Atletico Madrid I would be more hurt by our lack of action.

It's just the fact we need to get rid of a lot of our squad, and a young midfielder who had done well in France for free just kinda made sense if we want to spread our money as far as possible.

But typically we'll be chasing £50m+ players all summer meaning we can only get about 3.

If Villa of all teams were the ones who signed him for free, then the easy assumption would be that he may not be that good or he‘s not rated by teams who compete in Europe regularly.

Remember Jean Michael Seri and how much of a hit he is at Fulham, despite us being linked with him before he moved there?

Pogba? I didn't say we have never had any, but he was in our academy and then we brought him back. That's a bit different. For whatever reason, we never seem to close the deal on any of the Afro-French midfielders, usually playing in Ligue 1, that we are linked with.

I cant see us signing 2 top midfielders and have no cash for other places. So I guess the plan is 1 midfielder i.e De Jong as number 1 and the second spot will be Fred/McTominay and maybe even Donny/the youngsters. So basically its not the end of McFred but they will play a lot less games together and we will still not have a top midfield because no matter who we buy even if its Rice/De Jong they will be not be playing next to a top class midfielder. And if we do get a top midfielder and they get injured for a long time its back to McFred

It seems we missed out just like every other top club in Europe. Or maybe, he just isn't that good.

But the likes of Neves and Tielemans are better than what we have and are playing for ‘smaller’ clubs, also the likes of Mané and Van Dijk were signed by Southampton once upon a time but were good enough to European winners. Don’t think that’s a reason just to suggest that he’s not a good player.

Would he even be mentioned so much on here if he wasn't 'free'? I bet most complaining won't have even seen him play.

So it’s going to be another season without finding any values in market so better just stick with McFred again, isn’t it?

He isn't very good on the ball from the accounts I have seen, maybe that's why we passed up, but he may have been a good squad option considering we have zero DMs in the squad

Let's wait and see how he develops. I heard a lot good things, but what about the negatives?

I personally think we need to see at least 2 of those go.

I'm not convinced Fred or Mctominay are good enough. They have the odd game, the odd moments, but I just don't see them ever being consistently 7+/10 even if we play them in position. Both should probably go if we are to start seeing change.

VdB also has the jury out against him, but might be a star in a ball playing midfield.

Garner or Hannibal is a coach led decision. As fans we should open our eyes more to a Chelsea let approach of cashing in and upgrading, rather than forcing something to work just because it's been through our academy.

Yep, no Kamara, might as well close the window for us now.

He has been generally good in Ligue 1, sometimes very good but at this point in time he isn't in the category of player that you "missed out" on before he even kicked a ball for his new club. Maybe he will develop into something special but we are not talking about Fabinho or Tchouaméni. If you want an example that is closer to him and coincidentally failed, you have Nampalys Mendy.
