As I said yesterday, @Berbasbullet , keep an eye on these upcoming Netherlands games. He's a different beast in his proper position, and ten Hag knows it.
Dominated the 'Great' Belgium midfield and his partner in midfield is an Everton reject and a Watford reject

Belgium are just one of the many teams I've seen him dominate for you in his proper position. His victims are endless. Unfortunately, one of them was England!

I'm 100% confident it'd be the same here under ten Hag.

Not sure how anyone who see him play and then decide that we should not convince him to come. This guy will change the way we play and in my opinion we should be giving him all the assurances he needs to come.

You guys are seriously underestimating ETH here. Schonne was an attacking midfielder. His defensive midfield definition is different from what we classify as our traditional DM.
WOuld say rather you are seriously over estimating our central midfielders and also under estimating the quality of sides in the premiership in comparison to the dutch league, Fred and McTminay simpl are not good enough for a trophy chasing league side in the premiership at least

The problem is whether we can convince him, going off reports, so far he doesn't seem to want to come

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
Getting Thiago vibes

He'd just come off the back of the u21 Euros where he shone. People weren't convinced Barca would actually let him go. Only linked with us for a long time. Then all of a sudden all the other interested parties make their move and we're left in the dust.

If we can get FDJ, Nunez and Timber I think the club can be forgiven for foregoing the DM and even gambling on Garner and Pellestiri/Amad. Its important to remember that next season's remit is a return to CL football and restoring pride and confidence in the players. Given that we were wins against Villa, Newcastle, Leicester and Everton away from making top 4 during our worst season I'd say such additions should be enough.
Yes I appreciate that, but the defensive midfielder position has been weak for soem time, Herrera wasnt quite godo enough, Matic was good for a season or so and for the last two years or so it has been absolutely dreadful, its the first position should be getting looked at. We simply dont have an all round mifelder intelligent or good enough to play there Pogba failed, VDB didnt get chances, McFred are simply not anywhere near consistently good or intelligent enough.....to pin our hopes on Garner seems a little naive.

I would rather forgo a striker and have Rashford as back up there (irrespective of form he isnt even a striker either) than not sign a defensive midfielder.

One of the big reasons I love the club is the quality of defensive midfielders we have had and I dotn mean specialised, mroe box to box but intellgent tough all round midfielders. I grew up with Bryan Robson, then Ince, Keane and Carrick though different was a very sound defensive midfielder in the end.

We have had nowehere near that quality for a long time. As good as DeJong is, not signing him we have options to play that role though with nowhere near the quality, defensive midfield wise we simply have Garner and thats it

We are always like that useless in negotiations and then we will say there is no value in the market.

I meant since the start of this rumour, people here and on other social media site, dont want us to convince him because “we should sign players who wants to play for United”. That part baffles me as we are nowhere near where we should be and any player with that level of talent will be hesitant seeing our past record.

We dont have dithering David anymore at United. With ETH there, hopefully we can avoid some of the blunders we did while recruiting midfielders in last 10 years

Just dropped a midfield masterclass against the no.2 ranked side in the world earlier.

Proper deep lying playmaker

Neh he will realise the insane attention he will get for playing well is because he is linked to United and realise that will grow when he signs. :D

Disagee, we have seen neither are intelligent or good enough for that role and if they are our only options, we are still weak. DeJong isnt a defensive midfielder, he presses but he is all about his ability with the ball, DeJong and one of McFred and we still have the same problem in my opinion of gettign completely over ran and countered irrespective of what is improved tactially by the new manager.

A quality defensive midfielder is paramount this summer, I am genuinely baffled people think we can make do with half of McFred after the last two seasons of them playing there, shocking from any fan who has watched us, its our biggest priority
Yeah convinced we still need a proper DM in order for De Jong to flourish, hopefully talk will pick up of one later in the window.

We should just cough up the fecking money really. Better than anything we've had in midfield since prime Carrick.

ETH's system would suit him even better too...

Pogba was suppossed to take a step forward into the peak of his career and turn into Keane/Viera. Not only did he fail to deliver vs high expectations, we didn't put him next to the likes of a Pirlo or even a proper DM (Matic was on his last legs). Everyone at United has been poor.

My point of referencing the other midfielders was that other clubs do spend money on midfielders. Rodri and Fernandinho have been very important for City and I mentioned Modric, aside from Benzema and Ronaldo I would say he's had the biggest impact at Madrid. They still rely on him and he's 35/36.

So I'm saying spending on the right player to fix a problem in your team is important (just like Liverpool did with a GK) and it just happens that we have the most serious problems in midfield.

That's why I feel it is worth persisting when a player like him becomes available rather than 3 x Fred/Mct/VDB type players.

EDIT - Of course we have to have hope that we'll get the system right otherwise there is no point watching. And it isn't like we're spending all our transfer budget on a single player.
Oh, he’d be the diamond in the midfield 3, no doubt. He’d be the perfect deep lying playmaker like Jorginho, with two ball winning 8s ahead of him, similar to the Chelsea setup. He’s pretty damn good positionally. Not super excited to have McFred ahead of him though.

Modric is the best CM of his generation IMHO. KdB is more of a 10 whereas Modric is an all rounder. Pure class and tough as nails. But he was sold to Spurs for 16m, then after 4 seasons, sold to Madrid for 30m —not a huge fee.

‘Maybe FDJ is a one-man high press breaker, maybe he’s worth it literally just because he does that for us. Still, nervous that this is potentially another instance where we overpay for a big name player, fail to put the pieces next to him for budget reasons, and we’re in the same spot as we were with Pogba.

Are you aware, he played as a DM for Holland tonight and has for nearly all of his appearances under LVG?

Nah, he's been putting in these worldlies back when Harry was still at Leicester.

Is that a shot at Xavi?
Absolutely not. Koeman also played him out of his position.

Only recently have Gavi and Pedri broken through and it's rare for both of them to available.

In that case, the alternative to playing FDJ b2b is to drop Busquets.

So what position does he play for Netherlands compared to Barcelona?
No 6/DM single pivot with 2 midfielders slightly further up.
