Starting to get a bit nervous with these signings.

Is it possible that Ten Hag came in, was appalled by the lack of preparation / proposals for new players by the scouting department, said “feck it, I’m going to get players I know” and has gone for De Jong (who doesn’t want to leave Barca), Malacia (cheap so it doesn’t matter anyway) and Martinez, who is pretty damn short for a CB and is awful in the air?

On one hand, I like that Ten Hag seems to be taking control. On the other, are we missing out on signings from other leagues because Ten Hag has been in the Eredivise and doesn’t have knowledge of other leagues players? Does that mean in the next windows, he’ll have better knowledge of the PL and Europa teams and we’ll be raiding those leagues next?

The counter to this is that Martinez is going to play DM alongside Frenkie, Malacia is for depth and we’re still going to offload and add a RB or an attacker.
He's brilliant in the air

Our transfer list probably comprised of overpriced overhyped PL players like Rice and literally every Bundesliga player who doesn't play for Bayern or Dortmund

I don't mind ETH coming in and saying feck that. This first window he doesn't know the players inheriting all he knows is where we're short so him getting players he knows makes sense

Arsenal are being linked to Grimaldo now (Benfica LB). A potential alternative to Martinez they’ve moved on from due to us taking over? There were Arsenal posters who assumed Martinez was being targeted as a CB/LB mix.

Yeah frustrating as it is we are definitely going to have to compromise on RB/CDM
I think I’d prefer us to prioritise CDM… think ten Hag will give wan bissaka a chance if we can’t get a buyer for him… I also think games are won and lost in midfield and to play possession based style of play we’re going to need a midfield that can dominate and dictate games.

Get this guy, eriksen, de Jong, malacia and a right winger and that wouldn’t be bad business for ten hags first window. I always thought it would be timber we got though out of anyone from Ajax.. timber would give us a cb that can play rb where as Martinez would give us a cb that can play DM. We desperately need both positions but we’ll only get one I think unless we sell players on.
I think ETH probably wanted Timber as plan A but due to him wanting to stay for the world cup he switched to the second defensive option in Lisandro. Remains to be seen if ETH thinks we can get through the season with our current RB options but if we do sell some players I can see us going for a RB.

I agree, think a RB will only come if wan bissaka is sold. I’d much rather us prioritise midfield and attack. with a good midfield and turning into a possession based style we should be able to play most teams of the park which should result in teams from attacking much against us.

  • United are now seeking to reach an agreement with Ajax to sign Lisandro Martinez and it is believed they have established themselves as favorites for the Argentine amid competition from Arsenal.

  • Advanced negotiations are taking place between United and Ajax, with the player believed to be keen on a reunion with his former coach Erik ten Hag.

We might actually have 4 new players boarding the plane to Bangkok if Eriksen also joins.

Seems like there are conflicting stats on this. Fbref has him in the 23rd percentile in aerials won, but planetfootball has his way up the list:

https://fbref.com/en/players/bac46a10/Lisandro-Martinez

So which is it? Any Ajax fans that can confirm he’s good in the air?
Fbref only does the top 5 leagues and CL for those sort of stats so those stats will only be counting his CL appearances.

We ain't paying 70 mill for Antony nor should we.
I don't think Ajax expect us to pay that either..
They dont want to sell.. they have clearly quoted a stupid price for him expecting us to walk away.. If we are stupid/desperate enough, then they take the money..

So what you reckon: Martinez being courted as a DM or CB?
I can't say for sure, but I think he'll be utilised as a CB. His ability to thread the lines whilst being in the first line, would be more effective for us if we have de Jong as the first receiver in midfield.

I think our biggest struggle has been to progress play from deeper areas, especially against the opposition press. And someone like Martinez will help us in that regard. I think his height is less of a issue compared to the goalkeeper we have who doesn't attempt to command his area or some of our CBs who are weak against the opponent's transition, whilst defending a large space. So that has meant we've played a reactive brand of football on the counter attack with a safety in numbers approach. And we can't carry on playing like that under ten Hag.

Mentioned he was similar to Heinze..

Remembered how much I loved Heinze before I didnt. Was a great player for those couple of seasons.
Yeah, Heinze was great. It's just a shame for him that after those couple of seasons we brought in one of the finest left backs that's ever played for us.

I remember Heinze being played almost exclusively at LB. Then he had the ACL injury and wasn’t the same.

Just to be pessimistic, we did have another left-footed Argentinian CB who moonlighted at LB when we were desperate. He didn’t turn out so well and literally was a butcher

I think EtH is being very deliberate with his targets here. It seems he has identified our biggest problem was building up from the back so he is working first to improve in those areas. Very encouraging to say the least.

Planetfootball includes all his games while fbref only his CL games. Ajax fans I saw all said that his aerial ability is not of concern.

If we do sign him are we going to have to suffer years of “his best position is DM” despite him barely ever playing there similar to the Blind discussions

Have there been any CBs as short as him that have been good in the PL that have played in a back 4.

If the plan is to play a back 3 then I can understand it more.

Also with us signing the left back, a CB that can cover RB would have been ideal. We'd potentially have Shaw, Malacia, Martinez and Dalot that can play LB assuming Telles and Williams leave but just AWB and Dalot as options at RB.

I'm a bit dubious on this one from everything I've hard to be honest.

Maybe ETH is thinking about a back 3 which mitigates the need for a classic DM because it allows the additional CB to step forward and defend between the lines?
Perhaps. My take on it when I thought Arsenal were going to be signing him was that people that watch him play, ie Ajax fans and Argentina fans, don't have any great worries about his height, and its the people who haven't seen him play that have the concerns.

You would think that quote would settle it, he is not being signed as a DM. Maybe he'll offer some flexibility but pretty clearly ETH is buying him as a centre half. Which is... interesting. I would be curious to see how he does. It feels a bit like an experiment to have such a strangely short central defender that is great in passing. But if he's a top manager then he wouldn't necessarily always do the obvious things, he has a strong opinion and it's a bit outside the box to go for this in the PL.
