But they're about to get Sterling and they'll probably land De Ligt/ someone else at CB. They don't even need to commit more money to come up with a better deal, if they change the payment structure to a more front-loaded structure but offer the exact same amount to Barcelona as we have, its instantly a better deal because of Barcelona's desperate need for the cash ASAP.

All i'm saying is Chelsea being interested is not really far-fetched at all. Its a player that would improve a lot of teams including Chelsea's. Its fairly normal for them to be interested and quite frankly i'm surprised its taken this long for another club to be interested. De Jong is not just any midfielder.
They was always getting Sterling. They’ve still tried to get Raphinha and Richarlison.

There need for a CM is not necessary and we have to stop believing Prem clubs have a bigger budget than we do. It will be very similar. They might be monitoring him but he won’t be a top target.

I do think there are generally more active users than there were back then.

They very much can. They can stop bidding on new players and pay what he is owed.
As it stands, they can't even register the new players they've signed and they're asking everyone to take a pay cut in order to do that. Their only option is to sell players, and no one want's their shit one's so there are no other options for Barcelona as it currently stands. Sell your best players or start the season with all your new signings ineligible to play.

Don't see him going to Chelsea over us
Reportedly doesn’t want to leave and if had to leave I’d imagine it to be a club in the CL and challenging for titles. Only thing going for us is the ETH pull.

I’m actually surprised it’s taken this long for the “media” to get another team to be interested. This usually happens way earlier in negotiations.

I don’t really get why people are irritated by United taking time to do this deal. It’s obviously expensive, pretty complicated and the player himself would ideally like to stay where he is. And then there’s the wage deferral issues FDJ clearly has with Barca. Those aren’t our responsibility and tbh I’d be disappointed to see us solve a problem for Barca in that way. If he can’t get it sorted with them or isn’t willing to walk away without getting the monies owed to him then it wouldn’t bother me to see us walk away. FDJ’s wages, from a previous period, which he willingly agreed to defer, are between he and Barca. If that means he stays or goes somewhere else, so be it.

It's the most obvious hurry up and pay more I've ever seen. Even though it's Barca who need to hurry up and pay their player what he's owed.
Problem is, people will fall for it. Chelsea want Ronaldo, Chelsea want de Jong, next Chelsea will want Neymar and Dybala, and anyone else you can think of.

They've been bought by a rich owner, they'll be linked to everyone

They can guarantee him CL football for this season. Why would you sign a 5-year contract with such short term thinking? Not to mention that United will always be the bigger club, ETH is not the only attraction vs Chelsea.

Yes. He also likes money. We can give him lots of that.

I will say, lets take a second to think just how furious our new manager, who has been in the job only weeks would be if this fella ended up at Chelsea  :nervous: it would be an impressive way of getting things off to a terrible start.

I fully expect us to sign him still, it's not even worth contemplating the alternative at this point.

It's not unlike us to disappoint managers when it comes to their targets. It's getting to the point where it's just been too long now, I'm starting to think it's just not going to happen

Makes sense for the Spanish media to use Chelsea to force our hand if he's been linked to them in the past couple of weeks

Well that’s on a manager who went after a former player who didn’t want to come here.
I’d expect a lot more of Ten Hag. If he’s not convinced about a move then why are we still on this months later? What advantage did Ten Hag bring to a move? This shit show is every bit on him, I’d say more so since he’s the main reason we are even after De Jong.

All this Chelsea interest seems to be coming from the Spanish media, smells a little bit fishy to me.........

Although "IF" true I would be worried, because I could see chelsea just saying "F**k it we will pay you £13million in missing wages" as a new owner flex, they need a splash in the market and barcelona will just bite their hand off if they offer the same as us!

You could argue that's exactly why Utd probably shouldn't have gone all in on this deal in the first place, though. All of that above, surely they'd have known in advance that it would be incredibly complicated and difficult to get over the line, and the fact that the player himself seems fairly disinterested in the prospect of leaving them, makes me wonder why we didn't go for other targets that we would (very importantly) get without as much fuss in time for pre-season.

I hope it's worth it, obviously he'd be an immense signing, but can't help but feel that it's another short-sighted gamble by the club without any real thought behind it, in a summer where I was hopeful they'd put all that behind them.

I don't see him staying at Barcelona, but I wouldn't be surprised if Chelsea are prepared to pay off his owed wages. Their new owners seem quite desperate to make big signings and have already seemingly lost some of their biggest targets like De Ligt and Raphinha.

Weird bonkers take. De Jong probably wouldn't be this close to signing us without Ten Hag. How are you even possibly making this out to be his fault?

Are Chelsea going to pay the 18m or whatever it is that Barca owe him?

Yep, I concur with this. We are dragging on and on with this transfer, inviting others to come in and swoop.

I am less optimistic about this transfer now.

I am even less optimistic about the start of the season, I reckon we are in for a very very difficult season. The rebuild was meant to start this summer, looks like its not going to.

While I agree generally with the point, there is also a rumor that Jorginho could goto Juve as part of the De ligt deal and they would need a DM then.

But it's a far fetched one.
Chelsea bringing in De Ligt, Sterling, De Jong and Ronaldo. Wow. That's what a club with ambition looks like, and they hardly have more resources than United. Glazers are slowly but surely killing the club.

How many of those players have they brought in yet?
