There’s going to be a game where we play 5ft 7 Malacia next to 5ft 9 Martinez and Chris Wood is going to absolutely maul them.
And there's gonna be a ton of games where your opponent wont be getting near your box very often to put in a lot of crosses. You can't win 'em all. You can play Maguire-Lindelof another season and lose a lot of points because you can't dominate the opposition and they don't know what to do in possession. But at least they'll be clearing more crosses... if that makes you happy.:wenger::rolleyes:

Every player has his pro's and cons. There are barely any players that are perfect for any style of play. EtH wants a certain style of play, for which he needs players that can play a high line and are comfortable in possession. That is the priority and benefits his philosophy the most. Of course it'd be best to have players that fit that profile and are also tall, physically very strong, brilliant tacklers and very quick, but these perfect products really don't exist.

When you play a Mourinho type of football and invite the opponent to come and attack your box, you really need the tall and strong defenders. When you play possession based pressing football with a high defensive line, pro active / aggressive defenders with solid tactical decision making who are also good in possession are more important.

look...we have 3 CB's that can't stay healthy and none of them are left footed

It's a big amount of money but we absolutely need a better balance in the back with left footed CB that can pair with Varane or Maguire.

I don't see any chance that ETH brings this guy in to sit him on the bench and not be a starter

I stopped caring about height when Lionel Messi scored a header in a Champions League final against our titans.

Edit: was it O'Shea vida and Rio?

This one should be pinned on top of every page so everyone is reminded before they come up with the height argument yet again.

I honestly don't care if he is signed or not, our main problem has been in the middle of the park, still we haven't signed anyone in that position to rectify that problem, I do wonder what ETH is thinking spending £45m on this lad, he better be the next Maldini or I'll be the first to be critical of him ignoring our engine room.
I know it’s been kept quiet and a bit out of the blue, but there’s some rumours breaking that we’re after some kid from Barcelona to play in the middle of the park.

From that Video he seems to be playing midfield and spreading passes for fun. Like the look of him from that

Anyone not think he is coming in as midfield starter?
After ten Hag giving Maguire the captains armband again, I’m thinking martinez is being brought in as a dm… can’t see Maguire being dropped. Martinez and Varane would probably be our best defensive partnership but I’m all for martinez playing in midfield, means we can go to a back 3 during games if we need to which will make us extra attacking.

I don't think he is. I feel he's being signed to take Maguires place in the lineup over time.

However I do think ETH might be underestimating the physicality of the Premier League if he thinks a midfield of De Jong, Eriksen and Fernandes is enough to deal with some of the teams we'll come up against.

Saying that we always have Fred and McTominay which we can throw in for those games. Atleast we could have the options if Eriksen and De Jong sign.

I can't get excited about this. Not that I don't rate him but because I don't think CB is a position we should prioritise.
By last seasons showing, it’s certainly a priority. Just because we have numbers in that position doesn’t mean we are good.

Honestly none of this excites me at all.

I would prefer to see a CB highlight package consisting of him primarily bulldozing people and bullying them in the air.
That’s because you’re old fashioned.

This guy is who EtH wants to help his philosophy. I’m all for it.

No, i don't think MF is where you'll see him play. He's better at CB as shown with his time at Ajax and he's a ball playing CB that really suits what ETH wants to do in possession. He can step into the midfield if we want to build out in a back 3, he is comfortable carrying the ball from CB into the midfield to open up space in possession and he certainly can pick out a pass PLUS HE"S LEFT FOOTED. How many times did we see Maguire/Varane/Lindelof coming out of the back on the left side and not be able to make a pass to the opposite wing or a diagonal switch b/c they aren't as comfortable with their left foot.

we aren't liverpool who will want to launch ball from back to front almost all game long so it doesn't matter if both CB's are quality on the ball or not.

It doesn’t make me happy. Might seem a novel idea but I’d rather we have centre halves that allow us to dominate possession and are also good aerially. You know, like our rivals do.

He looks like a more transformative player than the other signings we are lining up. Maybe even more than De Jong.

It surely depends on whether he can have the same impact in the PL. But if he can, he look capable of setting the tone from defence and up. The type of player his teammates trusts and grow from playing next to.

Assertive, calm and composed on the ball, focused defensively and gets stuck in.

I’m really hoping this goes through!

I agree and I'm not saying we shouldn't get him. Just that we are so badly positioned in CM and up front that I want these sorted asap. As long as that's not the case a new CB can't give me real excitement.

It’s more like you’re obsessed with him. At least he’s our most available CB.
I am obsessed that people can’t see through him after all this time. I don’t get why he has a little fan club always quick to defend his performances.

Have to laugh at this.

Leaving aside the way we are likely to play, have you ever known an Argentine defender to 'get mauled' in this league? It just doesn't happen!
Probably the most laughable rebuttal in this thread. A lot of people have made points about how his height won’t be an issue and while I might not agree, a lot of them are reasonable opinions to hold. Thinking his height doesn’t matter because he happened to be born on a certain piece of land is nonsensical.

Yes, his passing is top notch (from the little I've seen of him on youtube), height is a concern, but he fits in with the domination football ETH wants to play.
Watching Maguire last season ponder, check back, take more touches before playing to his central partner or De Gea was very frustrating last season. I think ETH didn't want to rock the boat too much and didn't change the armband, but Maguire is too slow for a high line defence so I'm curious about this season and how it will be.

Just read its official, 55 plus bonusses. Congrats on having him, he is a class player. Besides his height no weaknesses. For a central defender he can really play football, tackle, defend high and comfortable on the ball. I dont think ive ever seen him play a weak game. If he is good for the premier league we will see. I never thought too much of Donny vd Beek, but Martinez is something else. Its too bad Ajax cant keep their players. This one will be missed

If we play him in midfield, thats a whole other matter though.
This is madness to me. We've been so bad at playing out the back for so long.

I think he has that midfield in mind for the weaker teams and teams that park the bus against us… we should be dominating with that mid against lower teams. Fred and mctominay may be useful against the tougher teams.

It was a free header though, Rio just let him drift to the back post. Great cushioned finish but a really poor goal to concede.
