Might have worded that a little better as by implication you are saying ten Hag is pretty stupid.
He might be for all we know... I'd doubt he is, so yeah maybe I should have phrased that better, but I truly don't believe he would chase a player that had no intention of joining the club. It would make zero sense and I think he more than anyone else knows that.

The board are likely going on his advice and he's convinced he can get de Jong, so he must absolutely have the assurances he needs. Whatever is said to the media is just bluster and posturing

The fact that Barca have told him to leave and we are still at an impasse, suggests to me he has real reservations about joining United. He is a quality player who would massively upgrade our midfield, but we dont want players on board kicking and screaming.

His agent needs to be honest about the situation, I reckon he is telling Utd one thing, Barca another thing and De Jong something else - it just seems a mess.

Not buying that this is just about being paid deferred wages before he leaves. I think he genuinely wants to stay at barca and is fighting to do that, which will ultimately result in them compromising on his salary. He gets to stay, Barca get his wages down & we look like we have been led down a garden path is how I reckon this ends.

Hope I'm wrong - I was really positive yesterday after Orny got involved but ultimately we have had no encouragement from De Jong at all, Barca are telling him he is not wanted and we are still looking like we are pissing in the wind.

This can't continue lads...

as long as you are happy with a tielemans / Neves midfield at 85m sure. Only players we have been linked to, possibly sangare but we have not been linked to him in any meaningful way bar a few fans, so I don’t think we will see it. Could we buy those two? Yeah but if you think either of those deals gets done fast you are beyond optimistic
Just because we aren’t “linked” to a particular player, doesn’t mean something isn’t going on behind the scenes. Papercnever recused ink, Erik knows generally who he wants so up to him to activate plan ‘B’

Again you're hearing what the media, clubs and player want you to hear. You're not getting the full story as the clubs are.

No transfer is done via the media and its a good think they're not, because I bet crap like this happens a lot behind closed doors. Not to this extent but still.

You're hearing from the media de Jong doesn't want to come but it's clear that United aren't being told that or they would have ended stuff a while ago. Even ten Hag isn't stupid enough to blindly chase a player, regardless of past relationships
Yeah, I'm pretty sure ETH has the boy's number and has checked this out before persisting. I'd be amazed if that wasn't the case. I'm sure this has more to do with this potential loss of nearly £20m in personal wealth for FDJ if he plays this wrong than any real reluctance. If the player is half the character the manager wants in his team, it feels unlikely he'd be chasing him without good reason.

IMO he is just putting huge pressure on Barca to pay the amount he is due by saying that he wants to remain playing in Barcelona. If he was saying or communicating through his agents that he wants to leave, it would give barca an upper hand in trying to pay him less of what they owe him. He will eventually come but only after barca have payed the 20mil they owe him. He holds all the cards and Barca are fecked as they should be...

That's not going to happen by all accounts. They'd have to reduce his wages by such a huge amount it'd likely be illegal (I've read max is 50% and it would need to be more than that). They need him gone and off the books totally

We're now paying Barcelona's players salary now. Yet another feather in Murtough's cap.
.
Even if true the price hasn't changed, just the payment schedule. Not sure I care if the glazers have to pay a few mill earlier than previously offered.

Let's see if he gets on tour with them, if he does then let's see if his camp compromise on his wages and so on, I hope everything turns out right for our sakes because we really need a player of his quality in our team.

I am afraid that it will have an impact on this year's budget though. Its a shame as Batca needs to sell FDJ more then we need to buy him.

I refuse to believe he honestly wants to stay there. You can't have so little respect for yourself. It just must be a money issue. If that is resolved he'll come.

So Barca are signing Bernardo Silva too according to Romero. Surely they've got to sell Frenkie now?

The problem is, yes we're hearing he wants to stay and thats fine, but how often is he saying this?
Is he saying this daily, or did he say it a while ago and media outlets are just reusing it because nothing else has come out?

It's just so confusing. He knows his time at Barca is nearly up i'd imagine

Not since Michael Carrick have we had a midfielder of De Jong's ilk. Let us do this deal
I hope and expect that he’s levels above Carrick. He was good. He had an excellent season in 2013 but he wasn’t a great player. He played in a great side but he was never great himself.

Sorry…Carrick was a great player?
“He’s one of the best holding midfielders I’ve ever seen in my life, by far. He’s the level of Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets in Barcelona and Bayern Munich.”
Pep Guardiola

“Carrick gives United balance and can play defensively too. He passes well, has a good shot and is a complete player.”
Xavi Hernandez

“I’ve missed a player like Michael Carrick in the England midfield, somebody who knows how to be in the right place at the right time. You gain a lot from having a player like Carrick as a partner.”
Xabi Alonso

“Carrick is a quality passer and he could play for Barcelona; he would be perfectly suited to their game. I think he is an underrated player in England and sometimes not only should the goal scorer be rewarded but the real players at the heart of the game.”

People who don't rate Carrick are generally clueless about football. He was one of the best midfielders of his generation.

By far the most confusing saga I've ever followed
I do wonder, if he is absolutely resolute about staying and refuses to reduce his contract, and makes Barca honor is as is, what will happen to Barca?
They can't afford it, we know that. They NEED him gone in order to register other players and avoid falling foul of FFP.
Would they just ramp up the pressure to get him out, or would they just accept it and continue paying him knowing it'll likely destroy the club?
