ETH already said either Frenkie or no one. So no point losing marbles knowing there is no plan B transfer target. Wait patiently and enjoy.
He didn't really say this though

Basically said we have alternatives but we don't know who they are or if they are available

So it's been 10 weeks (71 days) since the original report that this deal was 95% done.

Yet, here we are, deal is still 95% done.

Sorry chap, but that Messi comment there, sums up everything that has been wrong with utd since fergie left, i.e. value of the individual and what they bring as an individual talent, over the function of the team. A possession based midfielder that can carry the ball forward is fundamental to how ETH wants us to play and there is no better (in his mind) than FDJ to carry out this function for the TEAM. I dont think he will come, but if he does, well done to ETH for sticking by his number one target, and not just spending money because it's there.
The Messi comment was alluding to how people are treating him as if he is one of a kind and no one else comes close. Not like he's not been, let's face it, a flop for the last two years. Whether that's his fault or Barca's, he's been decidedly average and the jury is still out on the batch of Ajax 2018/2019 players outside of that bubble.

I agree we need a possession based midfielder but there are other players that can do the same job that actually want to come here and will sign for us yesterday. Conversely, I think signings like this sum up everything wrong with our transfer policy post-Fergie where we sign players kicking and screaming that don't want to be here. We're still Manchester United FFS.

Did he say he doesn’t know who they are?

He says we have a list, which suggests he knows who they are, and that we will make a move if they are available?

Obviously FDJ has been made available by Barca.

It may be 4/8 now actually…I’ve tried to forget last season

I’m not worried about Chelsea at all. The biggest risk to this deal is him staying at Barcelona.

Christ. What is this one now? 49.9% of food sales in the stadium?

Imagine cheaping out over 17M and instead paying him 24M next season instead.

Perhaps it’s because that’s what all the tier one journalists are saying?

No one is imagining it. It’s literally what has been briefed for months.
Not saying you’re imagining it, more that it seems like everybody is assuming that ETH is this deciding force of if attraction for FDJ. I have personally not seen that all the tier one journalists say this not anybody quoting him, but it seems like a thing journalists would write in a situation like this. .

I would say it doesn't do us any harm as he obviously has the respect of the player.
Probably not, but maybe not the most important factor.

What a shock, Barca will trigger the third lever and he will stay. Who knew Barca would find the money for everyone to stay.

Seems to me the FDJ saga is clear cut. Frankie agreed to defer his wages by agreeing to a restructure in his contract. In other words, he signed off on a change in the contract that said that Barcelona will pay him more money during the last half of the contract and little money during the early half...rather than the traditional equal amount per year throughout the length of the contract. He voluntarily signed off on those changes. It is not a case of Barcelona keeping hold of his salary. He signed off because he really believed he was going to remain at Barcelona long term and that he was helping his club out in a tough time. Problem is, Legally, if he lives today, Barcelona do NOT owe him a single penny. This is why he hasn't taken Barcelona to court. If it was the traditional deferred situation, it would be a matter for the courts to decide and he would have already signed for manutd while the courts decide. The fact that he signed legally absolves Barcelona. Morally however, he feels that Barcelona owe him that money.

Onto the second step of this issue. FDJ is due a major pay hike on his contract next season + a loyalty bonus. Those 2 issues mean that Barcelona cant register their new players....this is what FDJ is aiming for. He hopes that those 2 issues will bring barcelona to the negotiation table such that they can agree on a payment plan for the money owed. This is why we keep hearing that the player wants to stay. The 'I want to stay' message is not meant for Manutd. Its not even related to manutd. Its meant for Barcelona. Its a signal to Barca that he is willing to fight the long fight. I think this will be resolved naturally as we draw near to the start of the season.

This is also why ETH is willing to wait. In addition, ETH knows that FDJ already knows the demands of his system hence why he is relaxed about him missing pre season. He knows FDJ will seamlessly slot into his system within a few weeks. I honestly think that if it was any one else, they would probably also remain till the issue is resolved. Infact remaining is the only way to get any form of payment for the monies owed. This is why rumors of chelsea moving for him may remain just that...rumors. The issue isnt about the club he is going to...its about Barcelona paying him the money he feels they tricked him out of

So how many levers do they have ? Started with 1, now we're potentially talking about a third. Are they actually going to sacrifice their long term earning potential just to challenge in the short term ? What if they flop ? and in two - three seasons when Lewa is finished and they need a whole new defence, what are they going to do ?

Or do they think they have an unlimited amount of levers they can just pull ?

Depends on which way you look at it. From Uniteds side, they believe that personal terms won't be an issue at all, and they've agreed a fee with Barca, soooooo they are pretty much done in that respect.
The issue now is between de Jong and Barca regarding wages owed, which technically isn't anything to do with United.

So yeah, we are pretty much at least 90% done on Uniteds side. We just need to draw up the contract, get it signed and sort out the visa.

That would be the next president's problem.

They have so many midfielders, the 3rd lever can help them pay him off in order for Barca to get more money from United.

I convinced myself that all he can do is run with the ball a bit and play a 5yd pass. So yeah, great if we sign him because we'll be better at beating the press. Not the end of the world if we don't.
You can convince yourself for all kind of stupid things you know :D Let's agree you don't watch football often, eh?

What has surprised me is that Ten Hag has come out and said he wants the right player for his system or nothing and people see it as a negative.

Especially after we've all criticised our willingness to sign just about anybody for absolutely no reason at all over the years.

We finally have a combination of a manager that knows what he wants and a CEO/DoF that don't want to simply 'do things in the transfer market that other teams can only dream of'. Lets let them work his magic.
