So any time we bid for a player, and someone in the press reports about that player not wanting to come to us we should immediately back out of the deal?
No and we shouldn't back out of this one either. But the protracted nature of it and the comments it is attracting are beginning to make us look like idiots - and that's not nothing.

Whatever happens this summer I think we need to tell Barcelona to do one going forwards. They’ve dicked us about on a deal they asked us to join in the first place! They’re the footballing equivalent of Homer in this clip:

If it's true that Barca are having to force him out, I wouldn't want him joining Utd in those circumstances.

He's a quality player but if he's not really interested in moving to Utd there's a risk we won't get the best out of him even if he's supposed to be professional.

There's bound to be another player out there who could play in a similar way and would want to come to the club. If we can't identify targets that comes down to poor scouting.
Having Barca as your first choice does not equate to not wanting to come to United.

And can’t see him pissing about in a World Cup year.

So basically ‘what would the neighbours think’ and ‘won’t somebody think of the children’. It’s of no concern to the club when they have done all they can and are reliant on 3rd parties to resolves their issues to complete the deal. We will pretty much carry on regardless.

Some of the replies trying to justify this are quite hilarious. They've really drunk the Kool-Aid.

Reputational damage matters. I'm not saying pull out but it's still a problem.

Have no clue how anyone could view this as an embaressment for the club. Its clear FdJ's ideal choice would be to stay at Barca, but he also knows they want to sell and clearly has given EtH evidence that if he goes then United would be very high up on the list of clubs he'd go to. From a united perspective the opportunity to sign a player of FdJ's calibre, whilst not being able to offer him champions league, is an opportunity that can't be passed. Even if there is only a 50% chance of getting him the reward far outweighs the risk. We have already brought in 3 players, we all knew a realistic summer window would be about 4 good players in. The club is on track to meet that and/or potentially exceed that if we can raise enough funds to go back in for Antony. It feels like a lot of Redcafites have turned into Gary Neville with the constant need to paint everything as doom and gloom or as a failure. The transfer window hasn't been a failure or a success because its still open.
Exactly. People are quick to ring the bell because they are natures moaners. They will also be the first to shout ETH out when things take too long to come to plan

The only people looking like idiots are the people who keep saying it. ETH would have walked long ago if he didn’t receive encouragement that there’s a chance of movement. Think about it

By Barca? Because they need revenue/income to get around La Liga's FFP.

Obviously a loan, and a chilled Summer where they go back to basics and trust in youth would've been miles better, but it's fecking Lewandowski mother feckers!!!!
But surely there is a structure to the loan deal that can work for us and them? If it is an obligation to buy and we are saying that it is a.transfer fee of £75million then we could in effect pay a loan fee of £30mil and then another £35mil next summer with the £10mil in add ons?

I know football transfers don't exactly "work" like that. But Barca surely aren't getting £65million off of us in one payment this year anyway so why not just look at the structure of it all, give Barcelona a year to figure out the mess and then we effectively drain a year off his Barcelona deal and tie him to his long term deal next summer?

Well yes but he's going to look a proper charley if it doesn't happen. Innocent newcomer from the pigfarmer league gets played - not by Barca but by FdJ's agent.

Look I'm still for chasing this one now we're this far in, but it feels like a bad way of doing business and it feels like it's gone sour.

You’re in favour of bad business gone sour?!
You need to think about this, get your story straight and quit whinging about things that aren’t happening.

He's already pretty much said if we don't sign Frenkie that we'll just develop one of ours to fill the role and that there are very few players like that of sufficient quality around. I don't think there is any plan b to Frenkie in terms of signings.

I think people are still struggling to grasp this concept. Ten Hag knows what he's doing. He's not stupid, he'd have gotten assurances before getting the board to start negotiations, and I imagine that at any point during the transfer, if de Jong has a change of heart, ala Timber, he'd back away and call it off.

I completely trust that Ten Hag knows if de Jong wants to come or not. If it's true that they're in regular contact, if anything was to change you can guarantee he'd know.

My favourite reply

It's true though isn't it haha.

I'm pretty sure this will come to bite Barca on the arse sooner rather than later. If they have a bad spell on the pitch they'll absolutely feel it off the pitch

I think they will always qualify for the champions league because even last season when they were very very average they qualified quite easily in the end. The league just isn't as competitive as England or Italy where a bad season can easily see you drop out of the top 4.

They'll be on lever number 6 or 7 in a year or two, with basically nothing left to sell.
The 8th Lever of Death (死門, Shimon) is located at the heart. Users open this lever by puncturing their chest with their thumb in order to direct the cash flow there. While open, the user's heart pumps at maximum speed, granting them loans a hundred times greater than they are usually capable of receiving, far beyond that of the Super League founding clubs. A "Steam of Blood" (血の蒸気, Chi no Jōki) is emitted from the user's pores and hair, resembling a flaming red KDB-like aura. Opening this lever allows the user to perform the Evening Elephant and Night Laporta. The eighth lever causes the body to continually heat up until it's been cooked from the inside-out, reducing La Masia to ash.
