Probably a case of Ten Hag quickly realizing that a proper ball winner/defensive mid is in fact absolutely vital for us and that he can't coach any of our current crop to do it.
I’m all for it like, I’ve always thought we need a proper solid DM type player. Just doesn’t make sense that no one knows what type of midfielder we’re trying to sign because we’ve been linked with so many that have so many different styles of play. Casemiro + de Jong would be the dream.

We dont have a transfer policy. We just go after random players hoping the current manager can do something with them
That has not been true for most of this summer. We have exclusively gone after ETH’s targets. Tbf, this window was always going to be a disaster, not sure how I didn’t see it coming. New people incharge at the top + Manager’s first gig at a real big club = mistakes. As long as we learn we’ll be on.

I love Casemiro, great player and he'd certianly fix a lot of issues we have of screening the back 4. But...

£50m transfer fee and £300k pw for 5 years is a package in excess of £120m for a footballer player we'd get 3 effective seasons from, and we'd have to start succession planning straight away.

No plan.

I would just prefer a 25 year old who isn't going to decline right away, hasn't already won everything, isn't going to cost us 400k a week. There is just a long list of overpaid flops, very very few successes.
You may prefer it but who is this 25 years old DM that is not unlikely to fail?

The need for a proven CDM is great. In all likelihood we’re being worked over a la Ramos but if there’s a smidge of truth to the possibility of bringing Casemiro in, let’s jump on it. He’ll give us at least 3 top seasons, maybe 4 or 5.

Don’t get how Casemiro can be de jongs alternative when one’s a number 6 who is mainly a defensive type player and the other one is someone who progresses the ball. Our transfer policy is a joke.
I'd say Ten Hag has changed his mind after the last 2 league games. Weak as piss in midfield need a different type of midfielder to what he originally wanted. Maybe misjudged how physical premier league is. Think if De Jong was to come in play that role we would still be saying we need a bit of steel in midfield. Casemiro will hopefully give us that. Still need another midfielder.

Wonder if Chelsea goes through so much emotions when they signed Silva and Koulibaly.

Under soil heating.
If he thinks he's coming here for a holiday, it's going to be the bloody opposite. I'd actually feel sorry for him the amount of work he would have to do with our leaky midfield. Just seen footage of him convincing the board he's up to it:

We've been in need of a genuine no.6 for years now, we still would've needed one even with FDJ

Casemiro is a better fit for the single deepest holding mid of a 4-3-3 than De Jong is. It's just a surprise that it has taken until now to go after such a player.

Based on what we have seen from Ten Hag so far, in a positional sense, Casemiro is a better fit than De Jong, but we still need to sign a deep-lying midfield playmaker too. That said, Casemiro alone in the side should mean that Eriksen and Donny could both play more of a natural game though with Casemiro holding, and even Fred and McT can do what they do best alongside him.

Will Casemiro help us and allow us to play the way city do with 1 holding and eriksen/Bruno either side of him. He basically does that at Madrid doesn’t he while Modric and Kroos do all the work going forward.

It’s exactly what you’re saying. Maybe they don’t think signing one of the best in the world in their position is foolish.
It's completely the wrong move for me, but you're entitled to disagree.

I think Caicedo is the better bet.

Probably because there's a lot of ways of getting a balanced midfield and we needed 2 midfielders regardless! Casemiro is probably the best shot at fixing a ton of issues in just 1 signing though. Its like getting a more specialized/modern day Roy Keane back in here (bit less creative passing, bit more of a destroyer, same mentality).

He isn't a better fit. We need both roles, we just seemingly prioritized the rarer player which makes sense but it was never the only midfield position to strengthen.

Thiago won everything at Bayern and his desire to win hasn’t lessened since going to the scouse. Casemiro is the profile of player we need. Experienced and won’t take cover in big moments. This is a very exciting move and it should be celebrated if it goes through.

If we assume he's only got 3 top seasons as a starter left... 2025 is when Declan Rice's contract with West Ham expires. Just saying. Maybe that would be the plan.

I wouldn't see how a player who plays with his intensity and passion would suddenly make a move to a league he's previously said he wants to play in, and suddenly phone in performances.

I just don't see it, but I might just be being naive.

Hope we do get it over the line but I’m not getting my hopes up. His wage demands or something could be a block.

However, if his anchoring of midfield for those three years gave us Top 4 finishes, the money would have been a wise gamble. We'd then have three years of being able to offer players CL football to build an appropriate squad to replace him afterwards.

Oh no, let's not buy him cause in 3 years he'll be 3 years older and we will have to replace him.

We've been crying out for a half decent DM for 4-5 years straight now and we're getting people turning up their nose at the best in the world at that position and one of the most decorated ones ever still in his prime

All while we're sitting in bottom place in the league currently FFS, the Caf never ceases to amaze
The disconnect from our reality in a number of posts is astonishing.

"Why not get young hungry players with quality?" Because any one of them with enough ability to interest the very best clubs literally does not want to come here, perhaps?

"2-3 years down the line he'll need replacing." At the rate we're going, 2-3 years down the line we will be a perennial Europa League fixture.

And on and on it goes.

It's August the 18th today, there's less than two weeks of the transfer window remaining; we're not far off being locked in to another season of McFred; our situation is dire.

Really hope if we buy this guy we get another midfielder. We'd be so much better off with some quality in the middle of the park.
